English: Southern wall decoration of Temple 1 in Begunia temple complex at Barakar in Paschim Bardhaman district, West Bengal.
Originally there were five temples, but only four remains at present. The temples are not specifically numbered by Archeological Survey of India, so the out of the first two temples the southern side in considered no 1 and that on northern side as no 2. They are the finest existing examples of their type. An inscription in one of the temples written in Proto-Bengali mentions the name of Raja Harish Chandra as the builder of the temples. The earlier one is datable of c. 15th century AD. |
