Thefoundry work is most interesting, and is preparatory to theforging which follows. In the forge shop, all are busy with welding in all stagesof completion; here is one boy intent upon upsetting apiece of iron, i. e., making it larger at its end than it waswhen given to him; another converting a round piece intoan hexagonal one, or perhaps a square one into a round.Another, who has mastered the various principles, is em-ployed in constructing a piano lamp, chandelier, or someother object suitable to be made in wrought iron. MANUAL TRAINING FAIRLY TESTED. 505 learn to be machinists, they do acquire all the elements ofthe work. Throughout the three years drawing is given,and much attention is devoted to the various branches. Inthe free-hand work facility and truth are the things aimedat, and the results are quite satisfactory in the majority ofcases. We wish to give as artistic and broad a training asis possible to the students, and do not, as is customary insome of the manual training schools, devote all the time tomechanical drawing, believing that the artistic side of thepupils natures must be developed. The tower clock, an illustration of which accompaniesthis article, was made entirely by pupils in the school. Itwas designed by a student of the class of 1894, and madeby the classes of 1894, 1895, ^d 1896, under the directionof the teacher of machine shop work.
