Not that he was an ugly boy—though hisface wasralmost as red as his hands, and hisshaggy hair matted like the backs of hisown sheep. He was rather a nice-lookinglad; and seemed so bright and healthyand good-tempered—jolly would be theword, only I am not sure if they have sucha one in the elegant language of Nbmans-land—that the little Prince watched himwith great admiration. Might he come and play with me ? Iwould drop down to the ground to him, orfetch him up to me here. Oh, how nice itwould be if I only had a little boy to playwith me ! The shepherd-lad evidently took it for a large bird, and,shading his eyes, looked up at it, makingthe Princes heart beat fast. However, nothing ensued. The boyturned round, with a long, loud whistle—seemingly his usual and only way of ex-pressing his feelings. He could not makethe thing out exactly—it was a rather mys-terious affair, but it did not trouble himmuch—he was not an examining boy. Then, stretching himself, for he had beenevidently half asleep, he began flopping hisshoulders with his arms, to wake and warmhimself; while his dog, a rough collie, whohad been guarding the sheep meanwhile,began to jump upon him, barking with de-light. 134 The Little Lame Prince.
