Summary

Description
English: West end of the Abbey Church of St Mary (Tintern Abbey) located on the western (Welsh) bank of the River Wye. The abbey was founded as a Cistertian house in 1131. By 1269 the abbey owned more than 1215 ha of land and rebuilding of the church was commenced. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536, allowed to fall into disrepair sold to private owners. The ruins were purchased by the Crown in 1901 and control passed to Cadw in 1984.

Erbyn 1269 roedd yr abaty yn berchen ar fwy na 1215 ha o dir a dechreuwyd ailadeiladu'r eglwys. Diddymwyd yr abaty gan Harri VIII ym 1536, caniatawyd iddo ddadfeilio a gwerthwyd y tir i berchnogion preifat. Prynwyd yr adfeilion gan y Goron ym 1901 a throsglwyddwyd rheolaeth i Cadw ym 1984.
