Description
English: Deathbed portrait of Frederick III, Elector Palatine. This portrait reflects the strong religiosity of Frederick, known as 'the Pious'. Even though holding the symbols of temporal power, the sword and the globus cruciger, representing the office of Arch-Steward, he's moddestly dressed in a monk's habit. His closed eyes not just show that the subject has recently died, but also hint at his religiously inspired humility.
