Summary

Description Six photographs taken by U.S. Navy squadron VU-7 showing the sinking of the heavy cruiser USS Salt Lake City (CA-25) as a target ship on 25 May 1948, 240 km (130 mi) off the coast of Southern California (USA). The old cruiser was first machine-gunned by aircraft and targeted with HVAR rockets. Then 15 cruisers and destroyers fired 12.7 cm, 15.5 cm, and 20.3 cm (5 in, 6 in, 8 in) shells. Finally Navy and Marine air groups dropped 105 100 lb-bombs on the ship before it was sunk by torpedoes.
