Summary

unknown 18th-century artist
Description
English: Unknown 18th-century artist, 178 by 281 mm; as the list of names on the versoFile:Key_on_verso_to_depiction_of_Valentin_Jamerey-Duval.jpg indicates, in conjunction with the key numbers inscribed on the front, this drawing depicts Leopold the Good, Duke of Lorraine (1679-1729) with his son François Etienne (1708-1767), the future Holy Roman Emperor and husband of Maria Theresa of Austria, on the grounds of their country residence, the Château de Lunéville. The figure at right with whom they converse is Valentin Jamerey-Duval (1695-1775). The image is inspired by a story of Duval's youth. As a humble young shepherd he loved books and maps, and being observed one day poring over his maps, he was ultimately taken under the wing of Leopold and set on a course to become an outstanding intellectual and antiquarian in the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I. The work was offered by Sotheby's in 2018 as lot 165 in the auction "Old Master Drawings including the Collection of Professor Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann".
