Summary

Description
English: Victorian Railways 5'3" gauge A E Smith 'K' Class line lines freight 2-8-0 No.K165, built by VR Newport in 1941, withdrawn 1967, at the Victoria Railway Museum, North Williamstown, 2 April 2016. VR Newport built 10 in 1922-23 for freight on secondary main lines and branch lines. In the 1930's they were fitted with modified front ends and smoke deflectors. So successful were they that in WWII when there was an urgent need for more freight locos 43 of this verstile design (they had a wider route availability than the more modern 'N' Mikados) were built in 1940-46 with the modifications of the earlier locos plus, in the last 7, Boxpok wheels. So free running were they that they often worked passenger trains. Although withdrawals started in 1958, so useful were the 'K's' that they were the last VR steam engines in service, No.K162 being withdrawn in 1979.
