Summary

Description Daily Herald Archive at the National Media Museum. This photograph shows the poet and playwright W.H. Auden (1907-1973), pictured right, and the novelist and playwright Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986) chatting at Victoria Station, London. They were travelling to China via Paris with the intention to writing a book about China. Auden was born in England but later became an American citizen and is often regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Christopher Isherwood was born in Manchester and, like Auden, later accepted American citizenship. He wrote extensively and had a successful career spanning nearly 40 years. Auden and Ishwerwood were school friends and often wrote together.
