Heads Society. William B. R. Mason.

W. B. R. Mason Elected Head History Group. A. V. D. Honeyman, Plainfield, New Jersey, Named Honorary President Somerset Historical Society. The Courier-New Somerville Bureau. Somerville, New Jersey. William B. R. Mason of Bound Brook was elected president of the Somerset County Historical Society at a meeting Saturday afternoon in the Court House, succeeding the late Charles H. Bateman of this borough. At the same time A. VanDoren Honeyman of Plainfield, who was secretary of the society at its organization meeting in 1882, was named honorary president. Edward P. Johnson was named to the board of trustees to succeed the late Judge Nelson Y. Dungan. Other trustees are Mr. Honeyman, Mrs. A. L. C. Hardwicke of Somerville, Dr. Lancelot Ely of Somerville and George L. Layton of Bedminster. County Clerk Walter K. Crater was re-elected secretary and treasurer and Mrs. A. L. Stillwell of this borough librarian. Increase in membership of the board of trustees occurred through adoption of a resolution adding to the board of regents of DAR chapters in the county or any state officers living here. Mrs. A. L. Stillwell, regent of General Frelinghuysen Chapter, Somerville; Mrs. Harry W. Smalley, regent of Elizabeth Snyder Chapter, North Plainfield; Miss Helen Ohlendorf, regent of Camp Middlebrook Chapter, Bound Brook, and Mrs. Roy W. Gates of Dunellen, state registrar, become the new members. Miss Nettie Allen of Basking Ridge, guest speaker Saturday, described activities of the Basking Ridge Historical Society, which was organized in 1928 and has an average membership of 200 persons. The society has done considerable work, Miss Allen said, in preservation of historical records in the north end of the county. She announced that the annual dinner of the society will be held Thursday evening in the Old Mill Inn. Reporting on a suitable inscription for the new VanVeghten's Bridge, under construction between Manville and Finderne, Mr. Layton, as director of the Board of Freeholders, announced that a resolution had been adopted by, the board providing for a bronze tablet to be placed between two pylons on one side of the bridge facing a marble tablet on the other side bearing the ' record of the bridge. On opening of the bridge to traffic, which will take place about Dec. 1, according to Mr. Layton, exercises will be held by the historical society commemorating the structure as part of the route over which General Washington and his army passed January 3, 1777, after the victory at Princeton. The tablet, bearing at the top an equestrian figure of Washington, will carry this inscription: Van Veghten's Bridge General Washington and His Troops Retired by This Route to Pluckemin and Morristown Jan. 3, 1777 After the Victory at Princeton. Mr. Layton, Mr. Johnson and Dr. Ely were named a committee to plan the dedication ceremony. An old stone bearing the legend "M.T. 1777" has been preserved in the new structure. It is believed to refer to Mathias Ten Eyck, who was builder of the original bridge. Mrs. Stillwell's report as librarian noted that an old milestone set up when the Easton Turnpike was first built has been restored by John H. Allgair and placed in West Main Street in front of the Grant Store. The stone carries the inscription "11 miles to New Brunswick". Mrs. Stillwell also acknowledged receipt from Mr. Honeyman. of a copy of a sale conducted by Peter Sutphen, ancestor of William R. Sutphen, Somerset County sheriff.
