Miss Nettie Allen Addresses County Historical Group. William B R. Mason of Bound Brook was elected president of the Somerset County Historical Society at a meeting Saturday afternoon In the Somerville Court House, succeeding the late Charles H. Bateman of Somerville. At the same time A. VanDoren Honeyman ot Plainneld, who was secretary of the society at its organization meeting in 1882, was named honorary president. Edward P. Johnson was appointed to the board of trustees to succeed the late Judge Nelson Y. Dungan. Other trustees are Mr. Honeyman, Mrs. A. L. C. Hardwlcke of Somerville, Dr. Lancelot Ely of Somerville and George R. Layton of Redmlnster. County Clerk Walter K. Crater was re-elected secretary and treasurer and M,. H A. L. Stlllwell of SomervtllA librarian. Miss Nettle Allen of Basking Ridge, guest speaker Saturday, described activities of the Basking Ridge Historical Society, which was organized in 1928 and has an average membership ot 200 persons. The society has done considerable work, Miss Allen said, In preservation of historical records in the north end ot the county. She announced that the annual dinner of the society will be held this Thursday evening at the Old Mill Inn. Reporting on a suitable Inscription for the new Van Veghten's Bridge, under construction between Manville and Flnderne, Mr. Layton, as director of the Bonrd of Freeholders, announced that a resolution had been adopted by the board providing for a tablet to be placed between two - ., de „« tne nr M te facing pjlons on one siae oi me nriage lai-iun a a marble tablet on the other side bear- Ing the record of the bridge. On opening of the bridge to traffic, which will take place about December 1, according to Mr. Layton, exercises will be held by the historical society commemorating the structure an part of the route over which General Washington and his army passed Jan- uory I, 1777, after the victory at Princeton. The tablet, bearing at the top an equestrian figure of Washing- ton, will carry this inscription: Van Veghten's Bridge General Washington and His Troops Retired by This Route to Pluckemln nnd Morristown Jan. 3, 1777 Alter the Victory at Princeton. Mr. Layton, Mr. Johnson and Dr. Kly were named a committee to plan the (MHnitlon ceremony.
