Is this image correctly identified as an American soldier? While he has the distinctive legging wear of an American, the rifle on his shoulder is a No. 1 Mark III Enfield BRITISH rifle?

His name was Harry Shelly, a private from Illinois who attacked a German sniper post and captured eight men. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal by King George (as shown in this photo) as well as the Distinguished Service Cross from the U.S. Army.
