In 1947 Bergsland was appointed professor in

Indiana University at Bloomington in 1949–1950. He continued studying Aleut after retiring as a professor in 1981.[1] Bergsland's professorship was vacant until 1987, when Ole Henrik Magga replaced him.[2] Bergsland's final works were Aleut dictionary – Unangam tunudgusii (1994), Aleut Grammar (1997) and Ancient Aleut Personal Names (1998). He died in July 1998.[1]

Bergsland held an honorary degree at the University of Helsinki.[3]
