Lithuania participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy, with "Sentimentai" performed by Monika Liu. The Lithuanian broadcaster, Lietuvos radijas ir televizija (LRT), used the national selection Pabandom iš naujo! 2022 to select their representative, the final of which took place on 12 February 2022.
Lithuania was drawn to compete in the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest which took place on 10 May 2022. Performing during the show in position 3, "Sentimentai" was announced among the top 10 entries of the first semi-final and hence qualified to compete in the final. In the final, Lithuania placed 14th with 128 points. It was later revealed that the country placed 7th in the semi-final with 159 points.
Background
Prior to 2022, Lithuania has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twenty-one times since its first entry in 1994. Their best placing was achieved in 2006, with "We Are the Winners", performed by LT United, finishing in sixth place in the final. Following the introduction of semi-finals in 2004, Lithuania has managed to qualify to the final ten times.[1]
Lithuania was represented in 2021 by the song "Discoteque", performed by the Roop, who qualified for the final and ended 8th overall with 220 points.
Before Eurovision
Pabandom iš naujo! 2022
In mid-August 2021, LRT confirmed its participation in the 2022 contest.[2] On 1 October 2021, the broadcaster announced Pabandom iš naujo! 2022 ("Let's try again! 2022") had been confirmed for the third time in a row as the national final format used to select Lithuania's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, and opened its submissions.[3] The shows were broadcast on LRT televizija, LRT Lituanica and LRT Radijas as well as online via the broadcaster's website lrt.lt.
Format
For the 2022 competition, six shows were held starting in early January 2022, consisting of three heats, two semi-finals, and a final, in which 36 contestants took part.[4] The three heats took place in 2022 on 8, 15 and 22 January, while the two semi-finals took place on 29 January and 5 February. The final took place on 12 February.[5]
Competing entries
On 1 October 2021, LRT opened a submission form for artists to apply with one song (contrarily to what had occurred the previous year, when two separate forms for entries and entrants had been opened), with the deadline set for 25 November 2021. The broadcaster allocated a budget of around €54,000 to be divided among the participants as their funding.[3][6] On 7 December 2021, the list of the 36 participating artists was released by LRT.[7] Included in the list are previous Eurovision competitors Erica Jennings (2001, as member of SKAMP), Ieva Zasimauskaitė (2018), Monika Linkytė (2015) and Vilija Matačiūnaitė (2014). The day after the release, the titles of the songs were also released.[8] On 11 January 2022, it was revealed that Alekas and Monika Linkytė withdrew from the competition for personal reasons and illness, respectively.[9]

At Eurovision

According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big Five" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) split up the competing countries into six different pots based on voting patterns from previous contests, with countries with favourable voting histories put into the same pot. On 25 January 2022, an allocation draw was held which placed each country into one of the two semi-finals, as well as which half of the show they would perform in. Lithuania was placed into the first semi-final, to be held on 10 May 2022, and was scheduled to perform in the first half of the show.[20]
Once all the competing songs for the 2022 contest had been released, the running order for the semi-finals was decided by the shows' producers rather than through another draw, so that similar songs were not placed next to each other. Lithuania was set to perform in position 3, following the entry from Latvia and before the entry from Switzerland.[21] Immediately after the close of the first semi-final, a press conference was held in which each of the artists drew the half of the final of which they would perform in. Lithuania was drawn into the second half of the final and was later selected by the EBU to perform in the show in position number 14, following the entry from Germany and before the entry from Azerbaijan.
In Lithuania, all shows were broadcast on LRT televizija and LRT Radijas, with commentary by Ramūnas Zilnys.[22][23] The Lithuanian spokesperson, who announced the top 12-point score awarded by the Lithuanian jury during the final, was Vaidotas Valiukevičius, who previously represented Lithuania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 as a part of The Roop.[24][25][26]
Semi-final
Monika Liu took part in technical rehearsals on 30 April and 4 May, followed by dress rehearsals on 9 and 10 May. This included the jury show on 9 May where the professional juries of each country watched and voted on the competing entries.
The Lithuanian performance held a retro value and featured Monika Liu solo on stage in the same dress as she wore during the Lithuanian national selection. The performance remained simplistic with a dark and 1970s quality to the lighting, which remained the same throughout. It was revealed before the first semi-final that the Lithuanian delegation could not achieve what they wanted to on stage due to technical issues during the rehearsals.[27]
At the end of the show, Lithuania was announced as having finished in the top 10 and subsequently qualifying for the grand final. This marked the second consecutive qualification to the final for Lithuania. It was later revealed that Monika placed seventh in the semi-final, receiving a total of 159 points: 103 points from the televoting and 56 points from the juries.
Final
Shortly after the first semi-final, a winners' press conference was held for the ten qualifying countries. As part of this press conference, the qualifying artists took part in a draw to determine which half of the grand final they would subsequently participate in. This draw was done in the order the countries appeared in the semi-final running order. Lithuania was drawn to compete in the second half. Following this draw, the shows' producers decided upon the running order of the final, as they had done for the semi-finals. Lithuania was subsequently placed to perform in position 14, following the entry from Germany and before the entry from Azerbaijan.
Monika Liu once again took part in dress rehearsals on 13 and 14 May before the final, including the jury final where the professional juries cast their final votes before the live show. She performed a repeat of her semi-final performance during the final on 14 May. Lithuania placed fourteenth in the final, scoring 128 points: 93 points from the televoting and 35 points from the juries.
Voting
Below is a breakdown of points awarded to Lithuania during the first semi-final and final. Voting during the three shows involved each country awarding two sets of points from 1-8, 10 and 12: one from their professional jury and the other from televoting.[28] The exact composition of the professional jury, and the results of each country's jury and televoting were released after the final; the individual results from each jury member were also released in an anonymised form.[29][30] The Lithuanian jury consisted of Aistė Lasytė, Darius Užkuraitis, Ieva Narkutė, Jurga, and Vaidas Baumila.[29][30] In the first semi-final, Lithuania finished in seventh place out of seventeen entries, marking Lithuania's second consecutive qualification to the grand final. The first semi-final saw Lithuania receive twelve points from Slovenia in the jury vote and from Ukraine public vote. Over the course of the contest, Lithuania awarded its 12 points to Ukraine in both the jury and televote in the first semi-final and the final.[31][32]
