- Died: American test pilot Jean "Skip" Ziegler, 33, and his observer Frank Wolko, both killed in the explosion of a Bell X-2 research aircraft in the bomb bay of a Boeing B-50 Superfortress over Lake Ontario. The X-2 fell into Lake Ontario, and it and Ziegler and Wolko's bodies were never found.[54][55]
