Radu Ciuceanu (16 April 1928 – 12 September 2022) was a Romanian historian and politician. A member of the National Liberal Party and later the Greater Romania Party, he served in the Chamber of Deputies from 1990 to 1992 and again from 2000 to 2004.[1][2]

Ciuceanu was a National Liberal Party (PNL) deputy from Alba County and vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies in the 1990–1992 legislature.[7] During that time, he was part of the committee of parliamentarians and constitutional law experts that drafted the 1991 Constitution of Romania.[9] In 1990 he was one of the founders of the Association of Former Political Detainees from Romania . In 1993 Ciuceanu founded the National Institute for the Study of Totalitarianism (under the aegis of the Romanian Academy), which he led as director for 3 decades.[3][4][9] In 2010, the Bucharest Tribunal awarded him 600,000 Euros in damages for the torture he endured in communist prisons.[6]
Ciuceanu was awarded the National Order of Faithful Service, Knight rank.[1] In 2017, he received the highest award of the Romanian Patriarchate, the Patriarchal Cross of Romania.[3][8] He was elected honorary member of the Romanian Academy on 27 September 2019.[8][10]
He died in Bucharest on 12 September 2022, at the age of 94,[4] and was buried in the city's Bellu Cemetery.[9]
