Roland Edmund Murphy (July 19, 1917 – July 20, 2002) was an American Catholic priest of the Carmelite order, a biblical scholar and a specialist in the study of the Old Testament. He was the George Washington Ivey Professor of Biblical Studies at Duke University.
Life
Murphy was ordained a priest in the
Catholic Bible translation first published in 1970, and a co-editor of both the Jerome Biblical Commentary and the (New) Jerome Biblical Commentary
. Murphy also served as president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America (1968-1969) and of the Society of Biblical Literature (1984).
