Gunjan Menon (born on December 27 1992) is an

Jackson Wild Award, honoured as the Rising Star in 2020 for her contributions towards nature, environment, media and extended impact. [7] Her efforts towards red panda conservation have been recognised worldwide and she has been invited to various conferences and events to talk about impact-driven filmmaking.[8] [9][10][11] In her TEDx talk, part of the Global Countdown to Climate Change event, she talks about how she uses her camera for a difference and inspires people to care for the planet, its biodiversity and local communities.[12] Gunjan, along with Saiyam Wakchaure, is the co-founder of Beyond Premieres, an organisation that helps filmmakers create tangible impact with their art and bridges the gap between grassroots conservationists, policy makers and filmmakers. Personal Life

Gunjan was born in New Delhi, India and moved to Pune to pursue her Bachelor's degree in Audio Visual Filmmaking from Symbiosis International University. She worked in Mumbai after graduating and soon moved to Bristol, United Kingdom to pursue her Masters in Wildlife Filmmaking from

the University of West of England in partnership with BBC Natural History Unit. She moved back to India in 2018 to tell stories of Indian wildlife and communities living alongside forests and has been working on broadcast documentaries ever since which have been showcased on National Geographic, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and other digital platforms.[14]

Career

In Bristol, Gunjan's independent short film, 'The Firefox Guardian' was conceived as a part of her degree film in 2018. The film is critically acclaimed and was shortlisted for a student BAFTA award.[15][16] The film has travelled to various film festivals, schools and colleges across the world, has successfully started a dialogue on ecofeminism and community driven conservation, and continues to raise funds for red pandas. She is now involved with Red Panda Network's anti-poaching work. [17][18]

Gunjan's conservation work and stories have been covered in The Times of India, Sanctuary Asia, BBC Earth, and several podcasts and magazines across the world.[19][20][21][22][23]

Gunjan is a 'Girls Who Click' partner photographer and mentor who leads workshops for female-identifying teenagers who want to get into the field of wildlife filmmaking.[24]Nature Environment Wildlife Filmmakers (NEWF) Congress’ in South Africa invited her to talk about the ‘Role of Women in Wildlife Filmmaking’ and to conduct workshops on ‘Creating Impact With Your Phone’ and ‘Wildlife Cinematography’ in 2019. [25][26] She was also a cinematography mentor at the NEWF Wild Women Media Lab, an initiative to guide ten women in conservation science and media from seven countries in Africa through the process of producing a micro-film in 2020. She serves as a judge for Jackson Wild World Biodiversity Day Showcase and is a member of their Advisory Council.[27] In 2021, she was a speaker at the India Today Conclave in New Delhi as a part of the Defenders of the Earth panel.
