Romani? I'd always been under the impression that Gorman was of Irish Tinker heritage rather than Romani.

Tinker, not Roma

It's needed to let very well explained the fact that Gorman's heritage is not Roma (so called "gypsies"), but Tinker instead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.8.6.14 (talk) 03:38, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sources Explained

How can you have references for a series of streetfights that are remembered only by the people who knew Bartley or the people around him? You can hardly look up the national archives, or refer to the Irish Times article on what happened when no one was there to record it except his friends and witnesses. So, Instead of deleting additions like these, let the page reflect the cultural history of this gentleman, someone who by virtue of his profession and his personality, left little book knowledge behind him, but an oral tradition that should be documented.

Because this is supposed to resemble an encyclopedia, not a book of folk tales. And because without sources, it's impossible to tell which additions are genuine, and which are tall tales, and which are outright fabrications or vandalism. I don't know which edits are based in reality and which aren't, and without some form of corroboration none of them should be here. If the only people who possess the information are people who knew him, that presents additional problems. I've made changes to pages of people I know, but I'm careful to incorporate references to verify it, because people come here to learn (theoretically) reliable information, not the stories of friends and family. I might argue that if a fight is only remembered by his family and people who knew him, it has no business in an encyclopedia, as it clearly wasn't very notable. That said, if this guy is notable because of stories told about him, I think it's reasonable to report the stories told about him as long as they are reported in a way that makes it clear they are uncorroborated stories, and that the existence of the stories can be verified somehow. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aredbeardeddwarf (talkcontribs) 16:16, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sources?

This article reads like a fairy tale - "He arrived at the old building site where the Irish clan were staying, tore off his shirt and fought off two dogs which were set on him. When it became clear his opponent wasn't there, he overturned a car in anger and made off". I mean, c'mon folks, this sounds like it has been lifted from a Chuck Norris facts page. I'm not saying this didn't happen, but without a single source cited I'm inclined to be sceptical of the exact details of the incident.

Are there any sources for anything written here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by PCLM (talkcontribs) 10:23, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

this page is a direct copy of another webpage! http://www.lastingtribute.co.uk/tribute/gorman/2855211 shameful! 86.47.160.165 (talk) 01:59, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Worse, the page doesn't begin to approach the level of reliable source, as the site appears to allow unchecked contributions. I'm either nominating the page for deletion, or trimming it down to the bare bones to remove the unverifiable information. ShadowRangerRIT (talk) 22:38, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Most of this page needs deleting

This page is written like a work of fiction, there are no citations and an overly florid style. Why not just delete the lot apart from the few verifiable facts?

I just checked, all the citation needed notes have been here since december 2008, Unless someone who cares sorts this page out I think it should just be deleted, I would sooner risk loosing a few facts than keep loads of rubbish.

I'll give it a few days then put it up for deletion.

In popular culture

The character Mickey O'Neil from the film Snatch bears a very close resemblance to this man. However, I have not been able to trace any sources. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.248.84.87 (talk) 20:37, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Retirement and death - children

Please note note ‘Gorman is survived by his children, his son Shaun and his daughter Maria’ is taken from Bartley Gorman’s own biography ‘king of the Gypsies’ p. 82. There are no acknowledgments in the book of any other children. Please see also the link to Bartley Gorman’s funeral notice which states the same. Redstarrr (talk) 17:20, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
