Just wondering how to report when your donation boxes are full and need emptied 2600:100A:B110:4266:95EA:105F:8DDF:C10E (talk) 21:32, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, 2600:100A:B110:4266:95EA:105F:8DDF:C10E
Convoy of Hope benefits from those clothing donation boxes — but we do not own or manage them. If you know of a particular box that needs attention, please email [email protected] with its address and we can pass the message to the company in charge of them. Thanks! Edit Request

There is some information on our page that is either outdated, or incorrect as our programs have changed. Below is a list of each edit request, along with why something should be changed, and sources. Please let me know if I need to provide anything additional.

Edit request

1.     We are a “faith based” organization. Can you add “Faith-Based” in the opening sentence — “Convoy of Hope is a faith-based nonprofit…” Source 1 Source 2

2.     We work with organizations well beyond just the Assemblies of God and Chi Alpha. Can you change “is associated with the Assemblies of God and its Chi Alpha campus ministries and fellowships” to “works with many different denominations, churches, organizations, and other non-profits.” Source 1 Source 2

3.     The statement “In 1995, Convoy of Hope held its first large food distribution event in which they gave 700,000 pounds of food to 70,000 people” is inaccurate. The way in which the article sourced for this information states these data points can be incorrectly read. The way it is written in the Wikipedia article makes it appear that Convoy gave 700,000 pounds of product to 70,000 people at a single event, when in reality that amount was given for the entire year of 1995. The sentence would be more accurate if it read, “In 1995, Convoy of Hope held its first large food distribution event. Over the course of the year, they gave 700,000 pounds of food to 70,000 people.” Source.

4.     This Wikipedia article lists our numbers going back to 2019, so almost 4 years old. Here are a few sentences that should be updated to reflect accurate numbers. Source (you can find these numbers if you scroll to the middle of our homepage).

a.     Change “As of 2019, the organization has provided a total of $1 billion in food and aid, helping over 115 million people in the process” to “As of 2023, the organization has provided a total of $2 billion in food and aid, helping over 200 million people in the process” Additional Source.

b.     The Wikipedia page lists our children’s feeding numbers from 2019 as 200,000 kids in 14 countries. Our numbers as of 2022 are over 500,000 kids in 33 countries. Source 1 Source 2 Source 3

c.     This is an addition, so only add if you feel like it’s beneficial to the article, but since 1994, we’ve also served over 700 million meals. Source

5.     Convoy is not a “first responder organization”, as mentioned in the Services section. A more accurate representation is “One of its primary functions is as one of the first organizations to respond in the wake of disasters.” The source used is still fine, just a wording change for better accuracy.

6.     We have removed the word “Compassion” from our “Rural Compassion Initiative” moniker, so please remove “Compassion” each time Rural Initiatives are mentioned in the Services section (also then make “Initiative” plural). Source

7.     Our children’s feeding program doesn’t provide “daily” meals to children. We partner with schools to provide meals to children “every school day”. The way we phrase that is “provides regular, nutritious meals to children.” The source used is still fine, but you can find our phrasing at these additional sources. Source 1 Source 2

8.     Since 2019, we’ve started an Agriculture Initiative that is not mentioned on the page. Information about this initiative can be found here and here. We’d like the initiative to be mentioned. If it’s easier, we’ve provided copy that can be reviewed, edited, and then used. Or feel free to draft something else.

a.     “Convoy of Hope’s Agriculture initiative provides agricultural training and resources to help people break the cycles of poverty and hopelessness. Convoy’s agriculture specialists teach production methods that encourage long-term sustainable practices, like techniques on food storage, processing, and preservation. Since 2011, Convoy of Hope has trained more than 80,000 individuals in agriculture in 17 countries around the world.”

9.     This is more of a grammar change, but in the sentence, “In 1996, Hal Donaldson was offered a job in Springfield, Missouri and moved Convoy of Hope's headquarters there as well” there should be a comma after Missouri.

Generalmills2002 (talk) 15:47, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: 1. What does "faith-based" mean here? What is a reader intended to understand from this? It's very unclear and ambiguous. If CoH were reported as being "faith-based" consistently by reliable secondary sources, that could be included in the lead with an explanatory footnote, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
2. The association with Assemblies of God is relevant; why should it go unmentioned here?
3. Your suggestion looks good.
4.
a. Since these numbers are sourced to an interview with CoH leadership, they should be attributed - "The organization claims to have provided...".
b. Ok.
c. Not reported in secondary sources, so both reliability and noteworthiness of this number are questionable; shouldn't be included.
5. Ok.
6. The initiative should be named as it is reported in reliable sources. If its name has been changed, that can be included at an appropriate point in the paragraph, but it shouldn't be changed everywhere without explanation.
7. The phrasing chosen by CoH is not relevant here; Wikipedia editors should actually avoid copying text without attribution (
not for advertisement or promotion
.
8. External links in article text are inappropriate per
WP:NOTABILITY
, not the desires or preferences of article subjects. Any addition should be based exclusively on reliable sources. The promotional tone and intent of your suggested addition is also not appropriate for Wikipedia.
9. I'm not a grammar expert, so I might be wrong, but I don't think a comma is needed there (?). This example sentence, with a location name that doesn't include a comma, reads perfectly fine to me:
"In 1996, Hal Donaldson was offered a job in Canada and moved CoH's HQ there as well."
On the other hand, it looks weird with a comma:
"In 1996, Hal Donaldson was offered a job in Canada, and moved CoH's HQ there as well."
I don't think "...and moved CoH's HQ there as well" should be separated from the rest of a sentence with a comma, if it can be at all.
Remember that you are allowed to make minor edits to spelling and punctuation as long as they do not change the meaning of the content you edited. If you think a comma belongs there,

1.     You can gain insight on what a faith-based organization is by this Wikipedia article. The intent is that a reader would see “faith-based” and know that Convoy is an organization whose values are based on faith, which has a mission based on a particular faith, and which most often draws its activists (leaders, staff, volunteers) from a particular faith group.
Here are some reliable secondary sources that report Convoy as faith-based. Source 1 Source 2 Source 3 Source 4
2. The way the sentence is currently written makes it appear that we are an entity of the Assemblies of God and Chi Alpha, which is incorrect. We would like the sentence to be more accurate – and you are welcome to write that sentence however you wish, and even keep Assemblies of God and Chi Alpha listed. Maybe, “and works with different denominations, churches, and organizations including the Assemblies of God and its Chi Alpha campus ministries and fellowships.”
3. If this suggestion is good, are you able to go ahead and make that change?
4. Can you make the changes you approved along with your recommendation to add the statement "The organization claims to have provided..."? I will work towards finding secondary sources that site our most recent numbers that you requested better sourcing and present those in a later edit request.
5. Can you please make this approved change?
6. Understood – I will wait until newer news articles state our initiative name correctly and then make a future edit request with those sources sited.
7. Understood. Our goal was to present more accurate information, but understand now that we can’t source ourselves. Here are additional sources that use this new “every school day” verbiage. But if this sources are insufficient, I will wait until additional news organizations mention this new phrasing and submit a future edit request. Source 1 Source 2 Source 3
8. Understood. I will wait until a news article covers our Agricultural initiatives and then submit a future edit request.
9. I’ll leave without the comma.

Your edit request could not be reviewed because the provided references are not formatted correctly.

WP:CITEVAR
.) In the extended section below titled Citation style, I have illustrated two examples: one showing how the edit request was submitted, and another showing how requests should be submitted in the future:

Citation style
Bare URL reference formatting:

Displays as:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337 miles,[1] while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.[2] The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.[3]

References

1. https://www.booksource.com
2. http://www.journalsource.com
3. http://www.websource.com

In the example above there are three URL's provided with the claim statements, but these URL's have not been placed using

Citation Style 1
, which is the style predominantly used by the Convoy of Hope article. Using this style, the WikiFormatted text would resemble the following:

Citation Style 1 formatting:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337 miles,<ref>{{cite book|last1=Sjöblad|first1=Tristan|title=The Sun|url=http://www.booksource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2019|page=1}}</ref> while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Harinath|first1=Paramjit|title=Size of the Moon|journal=Science|issue=78|volume=51|url=http://www.journalsource.com|date=2019|page=46}}</ref> The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.<ref>{{cite web|last1=Uemura|first1=Shu|title=The Sun's Heat|url=http://www.websource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2019|page=2}}</ref>

In the example above the references have been formatted according to Citation Style 1, which shows the author, the source's name, date, etc., all information which is lost when only the links are provided. As Wikipedia is a volunteer project, edit requests such yours are generally expected to have this formatting done before the request is submitted for review.

Kindly rewrite your edit request so that it aligns more with the second example shown in the collapsed section above, and feel free to re-submit that edit request at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions about this formatting please don't hesitate to ask myself or another editor. Regards,  Spintendo  03:22, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ The fault for this formatting error may have originated with the automated prompts used by the edit request template, which asks for a COI editor to "supply the URL of any references used". While the resulting omission of information would not be the fault of the requesting COI editor, it nevertheless remains their responsibility to supply the references formatted in the style used by the article.
  2. ^ The use of bare URLs as references is a style which is acceptable for use in Wikipedia. However, general practice dictates that the style already in use for an article be the one that is subsequently used for all future additions unless changed by editorial consensus.[1]

References

  1. ^ "WP:CITEVAR - Wikipedia:Citing sources". Wikipedia. 20 October 2018. Retrieved 22 October 2018. It is normal practice to defer to the style used by the first major contributor or adopted by the consensus of editors already working on the page, unless a change in consensus has been achieved. If the article you are editing is already using a particular citation style, you should follow it.

Edit Request

There is some information on our page that is either outdated, or incorrect as our programs have changed. Below is a list of each edit request, along with why something should be changed, and sources. Please let me know if I need to provide anything additional.

1. We are a “faith based” organization. Can you add “Faith-Based” in the opening sentence — “Convoy of Hope is a faith-based nonprofit…” You can gain insight on what a faith-based organization is by this Wikipedia article.

Convoy of Hope is a faith-based[1] nonprofit…

Convoy of Hope is a faith-based[2] nonprofit…

Convoy of Hope is a faith-based[3] nonprofit…

Convoy of Hope is a faith-based[4] nonprofit…

2. We work with organizations well beyond just the Assemblies of God and Chi Alpha. Can you change “is associated with the Assemblies of God and its Chi Alpha campus ministries and fellowships” to a sentence that better convey's this fact? The way the sentence is currently written makes it appear that we are an entity of the Assemblies of God and Chi Alpha, which is incorrect. We would like the sentence to be more accurate – and you are welcome to write that sentence however you wish, and even keep Assemblies of God and Chi Alpha listed.

Here is a copy option, or you can draft your own, “and works with different denominations, churches, and organizations including the Assemblies of God and its Chi Alpha campus ministries and fellowships.”

Over the course of the year, they gave 700,000 pounds of food to 70,000 people.[5]

4. This Wikipedia article lists our numbers going back to 2019, so almost 4 years old. Change “As of 2019, the organization has provided a total of $1 billion in food and aid, helping over 115 million people in the process” to “As of 2022, the organization has provided a total of $2 billion in food and aid, helping over 200 million people in the process”[6].

5.Convoy is not a “first responder organization”, as mentioned in the Services section. A more accurate representation — that can use the same citation — is “One of its primary functions is as one of the first organizations to respond in the wake of disasters.”[7]

6. Our children’s feeding program doesn’t provide “daily” meals to children, so wording it that ways is inaccurate . We partner with schools to provide meals to children “every school day”. The way we phrase this statement is “Convoy of Hope also has a children's feeding program that provides regular, nutritious meals to children[8] in developing countries throughout the world.”

  3. ^ The article already makes this claim, using the term "first responder", which is analogous to being "one of the first organizations to respond in the wake of disasters".
  4. ^ The provided source states: "According to Convoy of Hope national spokesperson Jeff Nene, the humanitarian organization feeds a little over 200,000 children every school day." The phrase "school" was added to the article to indicate that the feeding of children occurs every school day.
