Dictionary definition?

What could one possibly say about this, beyond defining it, that doesn't belong in the Extinction article? Jkelly 02:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Smallpox

Is smallpox an animal? 70.58.27.194 09:35, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

no, it's an Acytotus. I think that was a sort of joke/fun fact, and not really a relevant piece of the article (that is, I don't think small pox has that IUCN status). A1s 20:36, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Smallpox was removed then returned to the article. If it's a joke, it's not terribly amusing. Can it be forcibly deleted? Hovea 02:56, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Species examples

Could there be an explanation which of those mentioned are subspecies? Because the first one, barbary lion, is a subspecies. Lion is not extinct in the wild, but only one its subspecies. As such the Species header is inaccurate. 85.217.35.50 (talk) 02:58, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Where does it say "Species" in a header? The lede says "species or lower taxa", and under the "Examples" header it says "species and subspecies". -- Donald Albury 15:30, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Somebody just changed it. I think, though, that the IUCN considers some ssubspecies "endangered species". (In the U.S., even populations in a geographic area can be "endangered species".) —innotata 16:01, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I just realized that. I hadn't noticed the edit to the article page earlier. -- Donald Albury 20:45, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That was me. It seemed to me that regardless of whether or not it is technically correct for IUCN, since we are writing for an audience that may not know anything about IUCN, it would not hurt to be a bit more specific. Donlammers (talk) 15:03, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think most people know the distinction between species and subspecies, or get it, and I think the rationale between that concept of "endangered species" is that taxonomic status doesn't matter so much for conservation. But what you added is fine, I'd say. —innotata 16:18, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lonesome George

Lonesome George is now dead — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.84.78.242 (talk) 01:15, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article already reflected the fact at the time you commented. —innotata 13:46, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Domestic animals

Are any common domestic animals extinct in the wild? I'm thinking of animals that you would probably not consider rare or endangered when you heard their names, but that only survive in captivity. The article cites an aquarium fish; do more exist? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.139.81.0 (talk) 04:14, 12 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalisation of conservation statuses

Rename talk page error

Seeing that all the other

Extinct in the Wild to Extinct in the wild to fix this. Sorry about the confusion. SchreiberBike talk 22:44, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply

Requested move

Critically endangered, Not evaluated, etc. It seems appropriate for this page to match those. See section immediately above regarding the talk page. Note that that error also confuses the requested move template and makes it appear that the move will not change the name. SchreiberBike talk 22:54, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply
