I think maybe "GMU" should default to George Mason University with a note up top for people who are searching for "Gaelic Medium Unit." This is the English Wikipedia and so I wonder how many people really are searching for a tiny stub article about the teaching of the Gaelic language. Corsulian (talk) 17:33, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GMUGMU (disambiguation) – This request was originally placed at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 July 29#GMU (disambiguation):

Pageviews for George Mason University dwarf the ones for other dab entries; it can be assumed that most people searching English WP for GMU as also looking for the American university. GMU should redirect to George Mason University and this redirect should be the dab page. MB 20:01, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

As seen here, this request is to move GMU to GMU (disambiguation) and with the claim that GMU should be redirected to George Mason University after the page is moved. (I am neutral and have no opinion in this request at the present time.) • I have no real opinion. I saw a fairly new editor moving a page based on the idea that one place was the main target. There is often an assumption among new editor that the local place is the most important and I figured it was one of these. I've been guilty of the same thing. And I see they did a copy/paste move as well. I'll fix it. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 00:09, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • The dab page was visited 42 times in June, and in the same period, the link to the university got 32 clicks [1]. Uanfala (talk) 14:56, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Three-letter abbreviations have to meet a very high threshold to become a primary redirect. This one, to a university that most people will never even have heard of, simply does not meet it. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:35, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by a "very high threshold".
WP:PRIMARYTOPIC says "much more likely than any other single topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined—to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term." The above data (32/42) shows this is the PT. MB 05:33, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply

You have omitted the long-term significance clause. Pageviews are not the be all and end all by any means. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:51, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The other uses are rather obscure, I don't see how any of them could have any long-term signifance. MB 14:52, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Obscure to you maybe, but George Mason University is obscure to me (as in, I've never heard of it)! My point is that what is really, really well-known to one person is not to another. Usually we only have primary redirects from an abbreviation when that abbreviation is really well-known. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:41, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. This dab page is averaging only 2 hits per day (compared to many hundreds for
WP:PRIMARYREDIRECTS are useful only in rare cases where large numbers of readers, in both absolute and relative terms, are looking for an article under a different title. Otherwise, there's no reason for one article to hog two titles. Station1 (talk) 05:38, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply
