List of Awards

I believe the list of awards, while impressive, is currently too long. I am unable to assess which awards are more notable than others, but to shorten the list down to the 3-5 most notable is probably reasonable. Rritterson (talk) 00:41, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Early life and education draft

Hello! I work for GMMB, a communications firm that has been contracted by the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub to update Mr. DeRisi's article. This makes me a COI editor, which means I can't edit the article directly. I will instead put forward edit requests on this Talk page, for conflict-free editors to review. If you would like to know more about my relationship with the Biohub, please see my user page.

I have drafted an Early life and education section for this article. I think it could replace the first paragraph under the current article's Life section, which doesn't have any citations. My goal with Early life and education was to cover:

  • Mr. DeRisi's place of birth, secondary education, and the formation of his research interests
  • His college degrees, both undergrad and graduate
  • His pre-professional work on DNA microarrays and entree into the professional realm as a Sandler Fellow at UCSF

You can view the full section draft using this link. I'm aware this article has issues beyond the ones I've tried to address with my draft. It could probably use a top-to-bottom reorganization, as it's composed solely of a Life section and a citationless Awards one. But I didn't want to overwhelm editors with a full article redraft. I figured this Early life and education bit would be a good place to start. If someone wants to jump in and review this request, I'm here to field any feedback you might have. Thanks so much! Patricia at GMMB (talk) 22:54, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In an attempt to find editors who might be interested in reviewing this request, I checked the edit histories of pages for notable scientists such as Jack Szostak, Frederick Sanger, and Dorothy Hodgkin. User:Solobear89 and User:BDuke, you both seem to have an interest in editing these kinds of pages. Would either of you like to review the above request? I realize I'm dropping this on you out of the blue, so don't feel obligated. But if you could help out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! Patricia at GMMB (talk) 21:25, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Partly done: Hi @Patricia at GMMB, this is solid work. I am implementing two changes: first, drop the second sentence ("He became interested...") since it works more as personable intro to the NYT profile from which it's sourced than as a useful piece of information for Dr. DeRisi's wikipedia page. Secondly, the title of his thesis is somewhat parachuted into place, and I think merits some explanation.
DeRisi earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Stanford University in 1999. Working in the laboratory of
University of California San Francisco
.
Thank you for your contribution to Wikipedia, and for acting with such honesty. Please let me know if you have any further questions. SoloBear 00:25, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I really appreciate the help, User:Solobear89! Your adjustments to what I've proposed seem more than fair. Below, I've posted a new request for updating and revising the Career section. If you'd like to review that, please do. Regardless, thank you very much for the time and care you've already put into improving the page. Patricia at GMMB (talk) 16:04, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Career draft

With this request, I'm looking to address the Career section. Similar to what I did above with Early life and education, I reviewed the current version of the article and then assembled an updated and revised section draft that strengthens sourcing on existing claims, orders events chronologically, and adds notable details about Mr. DeRisi's professional career. You can view this Career draft by following this link. Here, I'll briefly summarize what I've tried to accomplish with it:

  • Added information about Mr. DeRisi's roles with UCSF, the CZ Biohub, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; his work with David Wang on developing the ViroChip; his work using phage display; and his inclusion in Michael Lewis book about the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Rewrote, for clarity and accuracy, information about Mr. DeRisi's work metagenomic next-generation sequencing, his research on a malaria-causing pathogen, and his development of IDSeq (now known as CZ-ID)
  • Removed mention that he has publications in the Public Library of Science, as this didn't feel particularly notable
  • Removed the paragraph about Mr. DeRisi's awards and memberships; I would suggest that the former be folded into the existing Awards section and the latter be broken out into its own section (I have a full list of his awards and memberships, which I plan to return with since I didn't want to make this request too overwhelming)

I know this is going to be more work for editors to review than my proposed Early life and education edits, and that they'll want to be thorough in terms of scrutinizing differences between my Career draft and what's currently in the article. I've outlined the big changes above, but I can also get into more granular detail about what I've adjusted, added, and/or removed. Feel free to ask questions. Thanks! Patricia at GMMB (talk) 16:03, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, User:Blainster! I spotted you editing Jennifer Doudna's article and saw that you have a background in chemistry. Would you have interest in reviewing this request? No problem if you're busy, but I thought I would ask, given your expertise. Thanks! Patricia at GMMB (talk) 18:00, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, User:Dabed! Thanks so much for contributing that information on Mr. DeRisi's nitroxoline treatment work to the article. I'm currently trying to further strengthen the Career section of this article, but I'm operating as a COI editor, which means I need independent editors to review and approve my proposed changes. Would you be interested in helping me out with this? The details of my request are above, but I'm happy to field any questions you might have as well. Cheers! Patricia at GMMB (talk) 18:29, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm far from an experienced editor and tend to focus on other kind of edits so I will have to decline but it is appreciate that you declare your COI and try to abide with the rules. Dabed (talk) 21:23, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there! I want to let editors on this Talk page know that I'm taking over for Patricia on this project. Going forward, I'll be the one requesting edits and interacting with editors, in an effort to improve Dr. DeRisi's article. I have a similar conflict-of-interest, though I work for CZ Biohub rather than GMMB. (More details on my COI here.) I'll be following all the same rules Patricia did, and would invite any editors who might have feedback on this edit request and/or her section draft to reach out to me instead.
With all that out of the way, I look forward to working with the Wikipedia community! Thanks! K at CZ Biohub (talk) 03:29, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Awards and honors section

Hey there! I'm going to leave that Career draft request above, for the time being. I know it's a big ask, to have editors review such a long section draft. Perhaps my next request will be a little bit easier to parse. I'm aiming to revise the article's Awards section, which currently doesn't have any citations. I'm proposing an Awards and honors section that would have two subheds: Awards and Membership in scientific organizations. Awards would contain:

And Membership in scientific organizations would contain:

Thank you for your help! I wanted to check to see if you meant to change "And Membership in scientific organizations would contain:" to a section heading.
Also, I just noticed two relatively small things:
The institutions listed on the side panel under his photo does not include the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco, although he is the president of (no longer co-president). Would it be possible to add that affiliation? If space is an issue, it may make sense to remove Howard Hughs Medical Institute since he hasn't been an investigator there since 2016.
With that in mind, perhaps you could change the second sentence in the "Career and research" section to read: "He is a professor of biochemistry and biophysics and as of 2022, is the director of UCSF's Sandler Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research and President of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco.[2][6][45]"
Apologies for not spotting that earlier, and my apologies if this request is not appropriate - I'm still learning and appreciate whatever direction you can provide. Thank you so much again for your help. K at CZ Biohub (talk) 03:57, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
