Could someone who knows how to pronounce "Saariaho" please post the pronunciation, maybe after the name at the beginning of the article in parentheses or something? I find the IPA versions of people's names to be very helpful.

Thanks! 69.237.147.70 00:52, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know enough for the article but heard it spoken as if it was Latin, long a in the first syllable, no audible h. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:43, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am writing to provide a pronunciation of Ms. Kaija Saariaho's first name and surname.
Sadly, the death of this very talented compose, at the age of 70, was announced today, Saturday, June 3, 2023.
The pronunciation below is based on my Finnish relatives and Google translate, confirmed by hearing a Finnish language broadcast about her music.
Her first name, *Kaija* . is pronounced as two syllables: "Kai-yuh" the first syllable rhymes with "try" in English.
Her surname, *Saariaho* is pronounced is pronounced as four syllables: "Saar -ee -ah - hoe" with each syllable pronounced separately. "Saar" similar to “far” though with a longer “a” has a rolled "r" somewhat similar to the French rolled "r" in French, for example, "première".
Please note the ""ho" in Sarraiaho is NOT SILENT.
I hope a person better versed with Wikipedia's software can post a recorded pronunciation of her surname.
Thank you. George Locke Library fan (talk) 20:25, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If the composer was born Kaija Laakkonen, and is married to Jean-Baptiste Barrière, how did she come to have the surname Saariaho? The biographical section of the entry doesn't explain this. NicholasNotabene (talk) 18:56, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Post-serialism

"Saariaho was influenced by post-serialism, but she grew to find it too restrictive"

What is post-serialism in this context? I can understand the term as a chronological one, generally referring to music that came after serialism (such as minimalism, spectralism, etc.) but here the term implies a specific genre under that name. I searched for information about such a genre but couldn't find any. The quote that follows suggests it is about serialism proper, rather than "post-serialism" (whatever that may be). --212.182.133.214 (talk) 04:43, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this one goes, there is this alternative. Davidships (talk) 18:35, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Complete overhaul

Given her passing, the biographical section needs to be reworked and information added in a more concise and historically-minded way. The information is out there, we just need to compile it now. JohnDVandevert (talk) 14:04, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There was a useful Saariaho obituary in The Guardian yesterday; it also answers the question raised above about her name. Davidships (talk) 18:39, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good eye David! I'll be adding some information later this week. I'm thinking more along the lines of structure. How do you think the biography should be structured? JohnDVandevert (talk) 12:53, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
