Recent arrests

Mexico police raid 'La Familia drug cartel', killing 11 ""They were hiding in Jalisco, waiting for instructions from their boss and planning an attack on a group which calls itself the Knights Templar, with which they're at war," Mr Rosas told reporters at a news conference.

The police commissioner described the Knights Templar as an offshoot of La Familia, which had split from the cartel after the killing by security forces of La Familia leader Nazario Moreno in December 2010."

I saw the news this morning too. However, mexican newspapers reported since late 2010 that la Familia Michoacana just changed their name to "Knight Templars". An off-shoot and rivalry is new to me. I'd like to see other sources stating that, because the the BBC may have got it wrong. Cheers,

I am reviewing the news clips. A few weeks after Nazario Moreno was killed, the gang Knights Templar declared themselves a new gang taking over management of the activities of la Familia. This was can be interpreted as a change of name or a new gang taking over their turf. These latest mexican reports somewhat mirror the latest BBC article: [1], [2] However, the reporter suggests that there was a working agreement between the 2 gangs, which now has been broken. I am OK with including the Knights Templar gang as an offshoot because the Mexican police recently stated so to the reporters. I bet in the oncomoing months there will be more details about their history. Cheers,

Disbanded?

I know there has been a huge debate on whether LFM is disbanded or not. Nonetheless, I've noticed that sources do not correlate with the disbandment of La Familia. Stratfor's first publication in 2012 said that LFM "disintegrated at the beginning of 2011" but "is still active," although it has a very weak structure.[3] Other sources also reported apprehensions of LFM leaders as of 2012.[4] [5] [6] After the death of Nazario Moreno González, LFM is just a shadow of its former self; they are only made up of "factions."[7]

I am looking at the quoted references (Excelsior) stating that the cartel has been "exterminated" or disbanded. However, their web site of off line at the moment so I have to wait. Please stand by and we'll work on a consensus (based on officia reports) together with user Mercy11. Cheers,

Hello. I just reviewed the 2 references citing the Federal POlice (SSP) reporting La Familia as disbanded and the links are still alive. Same with the Beltran Leyva Cartel. I found no reference citing disbandment of the Juarez Cartel. In that respect, all 3 articles seem accurate. Cheers,

Hello. If the "disbanded" references were questioned in both articles, I would agree for you to link the discussions. But since the SSP (Federal Police) does not seem to have changed their mind, and the articles are updated in this issue, I see no purpose. Are we in agreement that the Feds declared La Familia and the BLO as disbanded? Are there any reliable sources disputing their statement?
Please note that there are a couple of anonymous IP users that persist with unreferenced edits; one of them (Rcool35) was banned and he produced several suckpuppets, all banned; in the last few years he persists with anonymous IPs (lately, starting with 75.1 : check his story). BatteryIncluded, your work seeking out those citations has been stellar and, as for me, I am totally convinced both LFM and BLO have been disbanded and are extinct. I am going to modify both articles in the lead sections to ensure this is clear upfront as this fact is of upmost importance. Knights Templar

Just one comment, one of the "disbanded" references at LFM, this one HERE states SSP considers that "Los Caballeros Templarios no alcanzan el rango de cártel" (does not reach the level of a cartel). However, the article on them does present them as a Cartel. I would suggest we change the CT article to read more in the order of just a criminal organization. Any ideas? Yes, it seems like they do not have the size of La Familia. However, they are referred to as a cartel by the media. I'll agree to go either way in their article. Their strength and/or weakness is likely to change within the next 12 months. Cheers,

Remnants

Anonymous: The Familia Michoacana is still active but in a small scale; they are not huge or powerful as they used to be. Theyre terriroties include some areas in the state of Guerrero and the metro area of Mexico city; example: City of Neza adjacent to the northeast corner of Mexico's Federal District. heres a link providing a bit of information of remamnants of the FM.

I agree with you. La Familia Michoacana is still active, although their doings aren't big game changers anymore. I support the removal of the word "disbanded" from the template and articles. LFM might not be considered a cartel anymore (although the word "cartel" is inaccurate in theory anyways). As long as they are considered a criminal organization, it should be considered active. That's my take, but let's wait on the opinion of the other editors.

Map edit reverted.

I added a new map that better follows the Wikipedia style guides using the same source that the previous map used. This change was undid with no explanation by BandonaVASQ. The source used to create both versions of the map show the extent of this cartel, not the so called: 'La Nueva Familia Michoacana Organization'. So adding it to that other wiki page would be incorrect. This really is just an esthetic edit, both maps use and show the same information. Just with different styles.
