How do I use Zotero with Wikipedia, especially for citing references? Allen (talk) 23:31, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

This is not the ideal venue for this question, but you can right click on an item in zotero, go to export selected item, choose wikipedia citation template for the format, and save it to a text file. (Hopefully at some point they will change it so you can just copy it to the clipboard). Cheers a13ean (talk) 00:07, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

What do you mean, "this is not the ideal venue for this question"? This is the Zotero talk page, after all. After you follow the steps you mentioned, how do you use it as a cited reference in Wikipedia? Allen (talk) 01:59, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

"This is not the ideal venue for this question" probably means that this is the talk page for discussing the article on Zotero, not how bibliographic tools integrate with Wikipedia.--Aschmidt (talk) 13:02, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

As to your question: You can just drag and drop an item from Zotero to the editor window of your webbrowser. For use with Wikipedia you have to select the Wikipedia citation format first in Zotero settings in order to make this work. There is nothing more to be done. The citation should be pasted into your editor, then. You might like to correct some minor errors resulting from incomplete or corrupt data, though. Sorry I should have clarified -- ideally the best place to discuss this would be the Zotero forums as per wikipedia guidelines on the use of talk pages. That being said, Aschmidt's comment has solved a long-standing frustration to me (having to save the citations to a text file, copy it and paste it into the wikipedia editor). You're welcome. :) I think drag and drop for exporting data from Zotero is not yet documented anywhere so far? Frankly, I realised that it works when I just tried it out after switching to a Mac where drag and drop is the normal way to transfer data between graphical interfaces. :) --Aschmidt (talk) 19:09, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Zotero consists of two parts, the desktop interface and the web site. I do not think that all the sources to the web site is open source. If that is correct I think it should be mentioned. Can someone please confirm/disconfirm? Nopedia (talk) 02:44, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

The clients are all open source (standalone, Firefox, connectors, bookmarklet), as is the data sync server and the PHP library that drives the web view of user libraries. The specific JavaScript components used on top of the PHP library are not separately released as an open source library. --Avram (talk) 07:42, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

There is a Tech Talk next Monday, 29 February at 20:00 UTC (12 Noon Pacific Time) about Zotero and the mw:citoid service.

The main subject is how to extract accurate, automated bibliographic citations from websites. This talk is mostly about Zotero, which is a free and open-source citation management tool. Zotero is used on the Wikipedias through the automagic citoid service. Citoid is currently an option in the visual editor and will (eventually) be used for automated citations in the wikitext editor at some Wikipedias. Zotero is also used by many academics and researchers, and most of the information presented will be useful to people outside of Wikipedia as well.

Let's imagine I have a news website. How do I have to format the title, publication date, and author(s) name in the articles that I publish on my website in order to be compatible with Zotero?
