The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is an upcoming American television special created, written, and directed by James Gunn for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy. It is intended to be the first television special in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. The special is produced by Marvel Studios.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff will star, reprising their roles from the film series. Gunn had worked on the concept for the special for several years before it was announced in December 2020. Filming will occur in early 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia, during the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), which is expected to last until April 2022.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is scheduled to be released in December 2022 on Disney+, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.

Development and writing

In December 2020, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a new television special featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy to be written and directed by James Gunn, the writer and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films.[3] Gunn said it was "one of my favorite stories ever",[4] with a story "as crazy and fun as can be" that he had "bugged [Feige] endlessly about over the years". Gunn added that the special would be live-action and canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and noted that he had been a fan of the Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) as a child.[5][6] Gunn finished the script in April 2021 after initially writing the treatment "years ago".[7] The main cast members of the Guardians films are featured,[8] with the story set between Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023).[7] Gunn noted there were parts of the special that would help set up material in Vol. 3.[9] In June, Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the MCU, said Feige was excited about a planned story for Groot to return to his home Planet X.[10] The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be around 40 minutes long.[9]

Casting

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special sees Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff all reprising their roles from the films as Guardians of the Galaxy members Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket, Nebula, and Mantis, respectively.[1][2]

Filming

The special will be filmed in early 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia, during the later portion of production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,[11][12] using the same sets as that film.[13] It will be filmed under the working title Poptart.[14] Filming for Vol. 3 began on November 8, 2021,[15] with production on the film expected to last until April 2022.[16] Henry Braham serves as cinematographer, after doing so for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) and Vol. 3.[17] A day of filming in Los Angeles had been expected by early January 2022, but did not occur due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant.[11] The special was originally supposed to be shot during Vol. 3's initial production time in 2019, before several production delays.[12]

Music

In January 2022, Gunn confirmed that John Murphy, the composer of Vol. 3, would also score the Holiday Special.[18]

Release

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is scheduled to be released on Disney+ in December 2022,[13] during the holiday season.[3] It will be part of Phase Four of the MCU.[19]
