United International College

The United International College (UIC; officially the Beijing Normal University – Hong Kong Baptist University United International College) is a public college in Xiangzhou, Zhuhai, Guangdong, China. It is a partnership higher education institution co-funded by Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University. The college is accredited by the Ministry of Education of China.

The college uses English language as its sole language of instruction. The college is composed of the schools of Business and Management, Culture and Creativity, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and General Education, along with the Graduate School. Upon the completion of their academic programs, graduates are conferred the degree diplomas of Hong Kong Baptist University.

History

Beijing Normal University – Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC) was established in response to the "Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running Schools" initiated by the State Council of the People's Republic of China on 1 March 2003. This regulation enabled joint ventures for institutions from the regions of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan with Mainland China's counterparts.

The official cooperation agreement to establish the United International College was signed on 20 June 2003 by Prof Ng Ching-Fai of Hong Kong Baptist University and Prof Zhong Binglin of Beijing Normal University. The Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the United International College on 1 April 2005.

The new institution, based in Zhuhai, represented the first full-scale cooperation in higher education between mainland China and Hong Kong, marking a significant milestone in cross-border educational collaboration.

The first phase of the teaching buildings was completed in October 2006, and by 2007, the United International College had established several cooperative agreements with international institutions, including Jeonju University in South Korea and seven US liberal arts universities under the Minnesota Private College Council. In the same year, the United International College's Accounting Programme gained accreditation by CPA Australia.

Significant developments took place in the following years, including an academic evaluation by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong in December 2008, which gave positive feedback on the United International College's innovative education and teaching quality. Furthermore, the United International College became the first mainland Chinese university to receive accreditation for its BBA (Hons) in Accounting by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants in May 2009.

Over the years, the United International College continued to expand, launching teaching and administrative facilities and inaugurating a series of research centers. The College also engaged in collaborations with other universities around the world and initiated a series of student exchange programs.

In 2014, the United International College signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Zhuhai Municipal People's Government, marking the commencement of a new campus construction.

2015 marked the United International College's tenth anniversary and the institution celebrated with various events, including a hiking day for students, alumni, and staff. The same year saw the beginning of construction for the United International College's new campus, a project which had been one year in the making.

the United International College continued to gain international recognition, signing agreements with multiple institutions such as Oberlin College and Hendrix College. The College also expanded its academic offerings with the addition of the Division of Culture and Creativity in 2016.

In 2017, the United International College's new campus was officially inaugurated, and the institution welcomed its first cohort of students for the academic year. The following year, the United International College received its first intake of students for its taught master's programmes.

In 2019, founding President Professor Ng Ching-Fai retired, and Professor Tang Tao assumed the role.

In 2020, the United International College expanded its campus further, signing a cooperation agreement with the Zhuhai Municipal People's Government, granting an additional plot of land for the second-phase campus construction.

As of 2021, the United International College celebrated its 15th anniversary and held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the second-phase campus.
