Rather than import, I copied your code and added:

span.style.fontSize = "x-small";

which mimics the German style. I tried a few other pages, here is the current size specified at various wikis:

I agree; while this is being used for testing I just want to keep the styling the same as it had been, to test the position separate from the appearance. Once the initial !vote is over I'll probably change that because we'll either be discussing what style it should use or what styles should be used if this is a gadget. –
