An alternative commonscat tag

Hi there. Thanks for the good work interlinking en-wikipedia and Commons' aircraft pages! One thing I might suggest, when you come across an aircraft that doesn't already have an "External links" section, is to use the {{

commonscat}}, as it improves the appearance of the page. Keep up the good work! - The Bushranger One ping only 08:47, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply

"Do not make a section whose sole content is box-type templates."
i.e. Please don't add an empty "External links" heading, just to contain a Commons link.
Also {{
the box template
, even when not in an inline context (as here), in the belief that it "avoids the box", as if that's somehow a good idea. In practice, it looks different to our exemplar article, which is always something that confuses readers. Apart from the accessibility issues of borrowing an "inline" template like this because it has a convenient presentation, despite abusing its semantics.
If you really want Commonscat, but on the left, there's a |position=left parameter.

TemplateData is here

Hey Chesipiero

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small

list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback
page.

re:Marinens Flyvebaatfabrikk

I disagree. If and when images of the actual aircraft in question are uploaded, then commonscats links should be added.

Up until that point in time, such links are counter-productive. They serve merely to create the impression that we have images of the aircraft at Commons, when we don't. People are likely to expect to find images of the aircraft when clicking the link, and then they won't. They'll merely find a parent category with subcats relating to other aircraft than the one they've visited. The only article were the Commons parent category "Marinens Flyvebaatfabrikk" is merited is the actual Marinens Flyvebaatfabrikk article, which you for some reason did not add the category to.

When images of M.F.2 through M.f.7 are uploaded, then Commons categories for said aircraft can be created and links added to the relevant articles. As of now, linking to the parent category serves no purpose. It's like adding the commonscat "Journalists from Norway" to the article about a journalist from Norway which does not yet have an image. Manxruler (talk) 14:04, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the additions, but I doubt a number of the aircraft (some of which were prototypes from at least 10 years before) saw any service then, and will need references to that fact.NiD.29 (talk) 06:40, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Italian Air Force

Hi, if you would, please use the English name,

WP:AIR practice. It's OK to put "(Aeronautica Militare Italiana)" after the English name if you want to, and I usually do tht for France and Germany as well. The main exception to this is the use of "Luftwaffe" for Second World War-era articles, as Luftwaffe is separate from the modern "German Air Force" article. I think "Regia Aeronautica" is also an exception, as that is the article's title, but I'm not certain about that one. Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 16:36, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply

G'day from Oz, I see you have made a few edits where you have used the word "aircrafts". Lighthouse articles

Hi Chesipiero, thanks for the many edits to the lighthouse articles you have made recently, many of which have been very useful. Also welcome to

cite rowlett
}}, which allows a specific page to be used, which is a much better reference.

I do have a number of concerns. Firstly that you are adding to the lighthouse stub template to articles which have been classed as Start class or better, could you check the talk pages first, and alter that if needed as well. You also seem to be adding the Lighthouses in Europe template to individual articles, which is a bit excessive it is normally only placed on List articles. I am grateful that you have stopped changing Coordinates from decimals to dms, personally I find that decimals are useful when checking on google and Open Street maps etc.

All the best (I will watch here for any reply)...Jokulhlaup (talk) 14:52, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jokulhlaup, yes I have a redlinked username because I think it is not indispensable to have an user page. I enclosed four templates at my talk page just to indicate the date I joined Wikipedia, the edits counter and the project I like to work, I think it’s enough. Wikipedia takes note of the history of all the edits for each user, in this way it is possible to check if there is vandalism or not ! I tracked in this mode an article I wrote regarding
cite rowlett}}, but the references regard the specific page and not the whole website. When I started to write about lighthouses: Livorno Lighthouse (Fanale dei Pisani), Palmaiola Lighthouse and others Italian lighthouses using the Template:Infobox lighthouse I found the coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds and I use this form; if I changed some of it is because the coordinates were not corrected, I checked a lighthouse in Japan, I don’t remember the name, that was completely on the opposite side of the strait ! OK

Checked Cape Sorell amongst your recent edits, and really wonder why you bother, you are getting into

WP:SEAOFBLUE
and overlinking, and adding flag icons which are really quite unnecessary. Australia does not need to be linked more than once in an article. It may feel good to you, but ...

Then Cape Naturaliste, in all

WP:AGF
it is hard to actually deal with this, Western Australia, Australia is reverted on sight by Western Australian editors usually, it is a redundant item. It should be obvious.

I am sure you are doing things that are positive relative to lighthouses, just take care with overlinking and unnecessary repetition... all the best for the new year - apology for less enthusiastic response. JarrahTree 10:15, 7 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent lighthouse changes

I'm seeing huge problems with recent changes you've made. I'm seeing changes to the locations of the lights which are in contradiction to the light lists and which have no citations, and dates which don't seem to come from anywhere. I don't want to have to go through a mass revert, but in Delaware in particular I've been over every light listed and I'm having a hard time seeing how the changes you're making can be justified. Hi there,

I noticed that you've classified this new article as a stub and I'm wondering why. (I created the article so of course I have an interest.)

The article quality grading scheme at Wikiproject Lighthouses says that a stub "is either a very short article or a rough collection of information that will need much work to become a meaningful article." And that it "Provides very little meaningful content; may be little more than a dictionary definition. Readers probably see insufficiently developed features of the topic and may not see how the features of the topic are significant." And that "The best solution for a Stub-class Article to step up to a Start-class Article is to add in referenced reasons of why the topic is significant."

Gannet Rock Lighthouse is 957 words long and - I would have thought - adequately referenced with inline citations to 14 separate sources. It's reasonably well structured with an infobox, pushpin map and image. Not enough for Start class?

Locations outside Map boundary

Please stop adding maps that cause a location marker to display outside the map, as you have done in Clarence Island (South Shetland Islands) and Cornwallis Island (South Shetland Islands).

Doing this makes WP look unprofessional. Locations marks should not be off in the margin of an article or any other stray location. In addition to visual error in the article, it creates map location errors. See Category:Location maps with possible errors. These are currently the only two mainspace articles in the entire encyclopedia with such errors.

Just wanted to let you know that the main source for these articles, the GNIS database, normally (at least records from the 1960's and earlier) gives distances in nautical miles, not statute miles. You can read more about this in this old discussion: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles/Antarctica#miles? - 4ing (talk) 22:22, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to me that you misunderstood my message. When GNIS says that
Gair Glacier is 10 miles long, it is 10 nautical miles long. And the accuracy should not be in decimal numbers when converting to statute.miles or kilometres - the values are not very accurate. I've updated some of your recent edits to what I think is a fair representation of the source data. - 4ing (talk) 18:23, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply

Lighthouse talk page edits

Chesipiero, you need to check Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls, because all of your lighthouse edits from today are showing up in there because of a template error. You have the class field appearing twice. Can you fix the templates please. Thanks. - X201 (talk) 08:41, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2 (oleo undercarriage).

The oleo strut of the F.E.2's undercarriage is of course well known - and well referenced. Just two sources that come to mind are:

  • Hare, Paul R. The Royal Aircraft Factory. London: Putnam, 1990. ISBN 0-85177-843-7, pp.208-209.
  • Cheesman, E.F., ed. Fighter Aircraft of the 1914–1918 War. Letchworth, UK: Harleyford, 1960. pp. 44-45.

I have nonetheless run into a bit of conflict with someone with interests from "a later war" who disputes this - perhaps on the authority of works documenting more modern "oleo struts". I wonder if you could apply an impartial eye on this one? --Soundofmusicals (talk) 23:50, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Chesipiero, greetings from Coreca. I am writing to greet you and know how you are. I'm quite fine. I am writing to ask you for your extraordinary intervention regarding the Coreca reefs, if you could possibly give a correction and an anglicization to the grammar, syntax and morphology of the article about my town, Coreca. Notice

The article List of aircraft operated by Alitalia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Indiscriminate list of individual aircraft is really not a noteworthy subject for wikipedia which is why such listings dont exit here but are more suited to enthusiast web sites, also note that there has been 50,000 airliners produced and hardly any of them are noteworthy.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be

deleted for any of several reasons
.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. MilborneOne (talk) 17:18, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just for your information a good example of a list of "historic" aircraft operated by an airline article is List of aircraft operated by Braathens. MilborneOne (talk) 17:28, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Italian names for shipyards

The Italian wikipedia article for Cantiere navale di Fiume/Cantiere navali del Quarnaro does not capitalize "navali". Brescia's book does, but I suspect that its editors changed his manuscript to follow English capitalization rules, not Italian ones. Since English wiki follows the capitalization rules of the original languages, I expect that you'll be reverting all those changes to the shipyard names.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 17:08, 14 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of ships in shipyard articles

Rather than add a not very informative laundry list like you've been doing, I think it would be far more efficient to add the shipyard to the category of "ships built by X", although you will probably have to create some of the categories.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 22:07, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting infos

Why are you deleting infos from articles and then re-pasting them in it? If you want to change the order of the sections, please just move them in the correct order without deleting and re-create them as if you were the author of those infos.--Alienautic (talk) 13:35, 4 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Source of coordinates of Kunlun and Taishan

Hello,

When editing the Research stations in Antarctica, I noticed that you updated the coordinates of Kunlun and Taishan, moving them by 23 m and 1.56 km respectively. Kunlun can be easily verified, but where did the new coordinates of Taishan come from? Fernando Trebien (talk) 03:23, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's not easy to fix the coordinates for such research stations. I verified from the Antarctic Station Catalogue (pdf) published by COMNAP. From Google maps the station it's not yet visible as others. Chesipiero (talk) 13:52, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Although COMNAP is sometimes a little inaccurate, this is a good source for lack of better alternatives, so thanks for the clarification. --Fernando Trebien (talk) 15:00, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
