Hi HenryCrun15, thanks for working on the Tour Aotearoa page. I'm a novice Wiki editor so need all the help I can get. I'm also - and this is a little awkward - one of the people who created the route and the "event".

I'd like to suggest that the route is more significant than the event and should be the core of the article. I also acknowledge that the event garners more mainstream media attention than the route so is more prominent on standard websites - hence your comment about "most sources". I can see I should have started the article with a lot more detail than I did - my bad.

Riding the length of New Zealand has always been the ultimate tour for those wanting to experience New Zealand, by any means of transport, since the roads made it possible. Usually this would involve a lot of Highway 1 - which these days is a terrible idea for a person on a bicycle. But by 2012 the New Zealand Cycle Trail had created 22 Great Rides that provide safe riding away from motor traffic. So in late 2012 the Kennett Brothers published a guidebook Classic New Zealand Cycle Trails (ISBN 9780986464126) to the 22 existing Great rides plus 24 "heartland rides" on quiet back-country roads to connect the Great Rides together. At the end of that book (pg 266-268) we strung together Great Rides and heartland rides to create "The ultimate New Zealand ride" from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

We're now on the 4th edition of Classic New Zealand Cycle Trails and it has sold almost 21,000 copies. With each edition the Tour Aotearoa route has been updated and refined. We also publish a route guide Tour Aotearoa Official Guide (ISBN 9780994118967), (4 editions and 600 copies sold since 2016) and a coffee table book Tour Aotearoa - New Zealand's 3000 km bikepacking Odyssey (ISBN 9780994118981). All of these exist outside the scope of the event.

Our (purely anecdotal, sadly) understanding is that more people ride the route outside the event than during it. This understanding comes from our book sales and talking to cafe owners along the route.

Also - leading the article with the event may lead to a misunderstanding in the reader. Typically, when a naive reader thinks of "cycling event" they might think Tour de France, or if they live in New Zealand they might think Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. Certainly they're likely to blur the distinction between event and race. As the organisers of the event we work quite hard to disabuse people of that natural bias.

For example, the Tour Aotearoa brevet event:

• has no entry fee
• has no prizes for completing the ride
• we don't start people off at Cape Reinga - they just go at the agreed time
• there's no-one at the finish to greet those who have completed it
• there's no support service provided along the way (by the organisers)
• there's no penalty for taking "too long"
• you can stop and start wherever you choose
• you can leave the route where-ever and when-ever you want
• there's no penalty for taking short cuts

What we do is define the route and set some start times (that are dependent on low tide at 90 Mile beach). It's the most un-event-like event we could devise.

And here's the kicker; we created the event to trick people into having their own ultimate New Zealand cycle tour/bikepacking odyssey. It's our trojan horse for the route.

@Kennett: Hi Paul and thanks for your message. Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you.

When I researched Tour Aotearoa to add to this article, all the independent sources that I found reported on "Tour Aotearoa" as an event, and either noted secondarily that it was a route that could be ridden any time, or didn't mention this at all. This is why, when I edited the article, I described "Tour Aotearoa" as an event first and route second.

I do acknowledge that Tour Aotearoa is described as a route in works like Classic New Zealand Cycle Trails, but these are not independent sources; they are written by the creators of the route and event. Wikipedia focuses on secondary sources; in this case I am trying to determine what people are most often referring to when they say "Tour Aotearoa", rather than what its creators would like people to mean.

I think that if the focus of the article is to be the route, 0not the event, then we would need to find and add more reliable, independent sources that use the name to primarily refer to the route. I acknowledge that, since the route creators are also the main experts on guides to cycling in New Zealand, this is a bit difficult, but if the route is commonly used then I would expect it to be covered in independent sources. Many of the entries on there are virtually empty but have active entries. I used some of these pages as a model/example for this entry. Do newspaper articles count as valid references?

Hi Gunlomboy. All articles on Wikipedia need to be about notable subjects, and in general Wikipedia's test for notability is that it has received significant coverage by reliable sources independent of the subject. The article can include other sources, so citing a press release from the Australian government in the article is fine, but it doesn't help to demonstrate notability. And yes, newspaper articles are valid references, and substantial news articles on a subject is a good way to show that the subject is notable.
