In answer to the question (immediately above) on how to set up a simple 'Hot article' feed, here are some basic instructions:

• Go to your WikiProjects's main page (e.g. WP:WikiProject Derbyshire) and create a blank sub-page to receive your project's hot article feed. (a bot will populate it daily, once activated, at around 07:50 UTC) As it's unusual to create and save a blank page, you'll be prompted whether you really want to do this. You do!

• Go to User:HotArticlesBot and follow the link in the 'Subscription' section to then go to User:HotArticlesBot/Config.json
• That page shows you all actively subscribed WikiProjects with Hot Article feeds (latest at the bottom), but you cannot edit it yourself as it is a fully protected page. But note the six entries for each Project feed. You will need to modify these for your own Project. These entries are explained in the row labelled 'description' at the top of the table.
• Now go to the Talk page at User_talk:HotArticlesBot/Config.json, click New Topic, and place an 'edit request', using the edit request template ({{edit fully-protected}}. The template should be completed so that it looks as follows: {{edit fully-protected|User:HotArticlesBot/Config.json|answered=no}}

Below the edit request, please your precise text you want adding to the page at User:HotArticlesBot/Config.json. You can use a previous edit request to help you. The text you add might look like this:

These settings will give you a table showing 10 articles, the number of days to survey (max 7) for edits made to those articles in that WikiProject's category over the last seven days, and the cut-off point between orange and red background text for the number of edits to include. • To insert that feed on the relevant Wikiproject page, just add the template in an appropriate section, either using its full WP: address or, if it is a sub-page directly under the Project page, use {{/Hot articles}} to insert it. Example 1:

My issue with this is that the overwhelming majority of WikiProjects are mostly or completely unused as actual centers of on-wiki collaboration. Journalism, for example, had a mere 76 edits to its talk page in the entire year of 2022; 13 of these were Sigmabot archiving sections. At least 1 2 3 4 5 are semi-automated notices (massmessages, RFC announcements, etc) and the majority of the rest are lonely questions that went totally unanswered. It seems to me that the predominant use of WikiProject pages is not as an active hub for people to work together by naming themselves members of the project, but rather as a central location by which people interested in a subject can see at a glance what Wikipedia activity in the topic area looks like and what's going on (article alerts and the like). For comparison, Category:All Wikipedia article alert reports has 1,654 members, and it seems rather doubtful that official proceedings were undertaken on WikiProject talk pages to request them. Similarly, the article assessment workflow involves categorizing articles into WikiProjects based on their subject matter, which surely does not require people to be official members of the WikiProject. jp×g 01:26, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
