Province of Canada map

Hi, thanks for the suggestion about the map of the Province of Canada that you gave me earlier this month. It's better than the existing one I found on the Commons. Have now uploaded it: File:Province of Canada.JamesWyld.ca1842.jpg Appreciate your help! Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 18:54, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mr Serjeant Buzfuz Happy to have helped! Was there any reason you uploaded such a low-resolution version? The file at the archive source here can be expanded to full-screen (via green arrow) and then zoomed to show incredible detail and it would be nice to have one of the high-resolution versions on Commons. Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:44, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The reason is that I'm a techno-peasant! I'm barely able to upload stuff. What did I do wrong? Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 20:57, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Plus, the uploaded version now has a grey bar along the bottom of it. I have no idea why, or how to crop it? Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 04:19, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr Serjeant Buzfuz I can upload a higher-resolution version in about 10 days: at present I'm on holiday with limited internet access! There is a good crop tool in Commons but I suggest you don't worry about that at present. If you go ahead and incorporate your current map in whichever article you had in mind, it will automatically update when I upload the better version. Mike Turnbull (talk) 07:17, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great, thanks. No rush. I’m working on a draft article, which is the only place I’m using the map so far. Not sure when I’ll upload the draft to article space. Have a good vacation! Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 10:49, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Michael, the other editor that I asked about it has already fixed it: User:WikiPedant, who has been helpful in the past as well. Thanks for pointing me to the Wyly map; it's now uploaded without the bars. Hope your holiday goes well. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 21:42, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Chloe Ashley Butac (12:17, 16 November 2023)

hello 👋

I'm Chloe Ashley Butac ❤️

Student and MAY I ask if how I can put an picture in this wikipedia --Chloe Ashley Butac (talk) 12:17, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Chloe and welcome to Wikipedia. There are two parts to adding pictures to articles. The first is to find a suitable image in the extensive collection held in Wikimedia Commons. You can use your Wikipedia account to upload your own pictures there if you can't find something suitable but it must be something you have taken with your own camera or drawn yourself because of copyright: most images you might find on the internet are not suitably licensed. Commons has lots of Help Pages about this. My own contributions are at this link to Commons. The second step is to edit the article to include the code that specifies which existing picture is to be used. There are very full instructions for this at Help:Pictures. As you have not made any other edits from your account yet, I suggest you start getting used to how things work in general by beginning the tutorial at Help:Introduction. I'll also place some introductory links on your Talk Page. By all means come back here to ask me about anty details you are unsure of. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:41, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Organophosphate pesticides

Hi Mike, I was wondering if I could pick your brains about organophosphate pesticides. The current organophosphate article is largely devoted to the dangers of thee things, but as far as I can tell most of them seem to have been regulated out of common use. Bensulide and Acephate still seem to be important, but parathion looks to be long gone. Do you still keep track of this area? Does that assessment ring true to you? Project Osprey (talk) 14:49, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't follow most pesticides closely, only those where I've created or extensively edited their articles (see my UserPage for many examples). The simplest source of information on actual usage is for the US at this URL, which is a list linking to pesticide usage maps (latest=2018/9), several of which I've placed on Commons and update from time to time. I can see immediately that, for example, tribufos (no WP article) is still used at millions of pounds per year on cotton. In general, I stay clear of upper-level articles like organophosphate or pesticide as I don't want to get into pointless arguments with the anti-pesticide lobby who only see costs and not benefits. I prefer to edit articles on individual chemicals and recently created the list of insecticides and list of herbicides after noting that we have long had one on fungicides but were missing the others. So, yes, I can point you to sources but I don't have current info in my head. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:33, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's ok, I only asked because your bio gave me the impression that you might have worked in this area at some point. Thanks for the link, it's a lot of info to try and make sense of but hopefully useful, at list I have a complete list. The whole area is a mess, pesticides seem to stretch the terminology to it's limit - phosphoramidothioates like Acephate are generalised to organophosphate. The page will have to explain that. I edit top level pages with some reluctance, they often have gatekeepers and I tend to burn the pages down and start again, which causes much anxiety. Also, it takes ages to do, I've been working on a rebuild for months, and likely still will be into next year. Hopefully worth it though. --Project Osprey (talk) 11:08, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@
pyrethroids were the up-and-coming topic when I started out. I think that the reason acephate gets lumped in with organophosphates is owing to its mode-of-action, which is of course cholinesterase inhibition. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:31, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply

Well I've redone much of the page, (more to come later). Time will tell if this amounts to kicking over an ant hill... --Project Osprey (talk) 00:52, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ad copy. Typically, it's appropriate to remove a maintenance template when the issue has been resolved but the edit you made did not accomplish that. I, more than some, have doubts about environmental extortion rackets and their corporate greenwashing so that particular article needs work, which will be difficult because of the slant of extant source material. Deleting that article might make more sense. Problems like promotional tone are subjective so you might steer clear of those and stick to objective problems like orphaned articles, unsourced articles, etc. I am glad that you came to ask, as we're always glad to help new editors learn the ropes. Question from EagleSleuth (03:00, 7 February 2024)

Hello Michael,

I hope this message finds you well. As my assigned mentor, I'm reaching out to seek your guidance on a matter regarding one of my drafts on Wikipedia.

Recently, I created a draft for an article about an actor, which was subsequently declined. After reviewing the feedback and considering the best approach to address the issues, I decided to start afresh and created a new draft that better aligns with Wikipedia's guidelines and standards.

Given this context, I would like to request your assistance in deleting the original draft. The title of the draft is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Troy_Bronson_Actor . I believe removing this draft would help avoid confusion and ensure that the focus remains on the improved version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Troy_Bronson_2024

So, do the Wikipedia have templates about this article is being developed? Thank you! Lam Nguyen, talk to me 13:51, 18 February 2024 (UTC) 13:49, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has no deadlines and you should prioritise your studies over editing here! All our articles are somewhat works-in-progress and no-one will mind if you can't spare the time currently to add something you intend to add later. One possibility is to use the article's Talk Page to mention briefly what you intend to work on more fully later. Anyone with the article on their watchlist will be alerted by your Talk Page addition. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:03, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply

inuse}} and {{Under construction}}, I see if the template page has not been edited in several days, it will be removed. And because of my busy studying, I'm not sure about that I can done this in a short time. So I decided not to use this. Maybe in the future, when I have more free time, I am definitely going to use it. Lam Nguyen (talk) 14:27, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply

Question from Swampycow (13:53, 22 February 2024)

Hello, I'm Swampycow and have been assigned your mentorship - thanks for taking the time out of your day to answer our questions!

I had a question about rewriting articles - I would like to do a rewrite of the article Loss function, but being a bit larger than my previous minor edits I was wondering if there was a way to save an edit without publishing it and come back to it later? Something like the Sandbox but that doesn't delete itself occasionally, and perhaps a way for it to go through review prior to publishing. Thanks! Question from Jakelacaze (01:01, 26 February 2024)

How can I edit a page title and image for a company?

This is the page I'm asking for: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laredo_Petroleum

I've made the other changes I could figure out. --Jakelacaze (talk) 01:01, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I worked for Laredo in the past but have not done so since 2017. This article was just an easy place for me to help out.
Thank you for the info! Jakelacaze (talk) 14:23, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so you should just read the
COI link and consider whether anything there strikes you as worth disclosing (which would be done on the Talk Pages of articles). The only other thing you need to be careful about is not to add anything you personally know but can't be backed up by citations. In a moment I'll add some useful links to your own Talk Page which should help you up the rather steep learning curve. I hope you find editing Wikipedia rewarding.
