Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Sabine's Sunbird. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

"extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion
with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016,

a request for comment
established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Hi, I've started working this up to featured article status, some way off yet though. I notice that you were a major editor on this, and I'm happy to submit it as a joint nomination when it's ready, if you are OK with that. I don't mind doing the grunt work, I've got decent sources although I might possibly need some help with sources when I get to "Predators and parasites" (haven't even started looking yet). Let me know what you think Jimfbleak (talk) 05:33, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I know we are some way off posting yet, but a few quick comments (not sure how recently you've done an FA, forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know).
  • There shouldn't be any refs in the lead
  • No wikilinks to continents or sovereign countries
  • parts of the article are in AE spelling, eg "defense" (noun) and "behavior". No AE country has bee-eaters, whereas many BE countries in Africa, Australia, Europe and South Asia do. Article should be consistently in BE
No galleries, although obviously some of the pics could be placed in the text if appropriate

No rush to fix these, I'm still collecting refs for predators and parasites. Would you be happy for future discussion to be on the article talk page? That seems more logical than our talk pages. We went to the Western Cape some years ago, great birding and climate and good fun Jimfbleak (talk) 05:31, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Seabird

I do not know whether you are a native speaker of the English language. My edit relates to an issue of grammar. To "fight" buoyancy is not a grammatically or even a physically correct concept. Feel free to change the wording, but reverting a good-faith edit that is grammatically and conceptually correct, without at least discussing it and/or supplying an inline citation, is just plain rude. Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that

TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Sabine's Sunbird.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available

here
but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at

WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply

Sabine's Sunbird.......welcome back! I thought I'd let you know I've been working on the New Zealand bird list, and am now working on the Chatham Islands list.....I've been using a 200 mile circle around North Island, South Island, and Stewart Island for border definition purposes. This would give the Kermadec Islands, Auckland Islands, Chatham Islands, Campbell Islands, Antipodes Islands, and Bounty Islands their own distinct listing area. The Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau already have distinct lists. Just an FYI, unless you'd like to offer suggestions......Pvmoutside (talk) 22:12, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lead of red-billed quelea

Hello Sabine's Sunbird. Thanks for prepping the Q.q.-article before review and your offer for assistance. As you suggested, I have somewhat extended the lead, but perhaps it needs a bit more. I also have removed some of the subheadings or merged them, but not entirely to the level that may be consistent with some other articles. I did split up the gallery, although with some feeling of loss, as its intended function was to enable easy comparison of the different plumages among the sexes and subspecies, but since it was far from complete and also contained also other images, I concur it is better to split this one up. However, I think a gallery is sometimes very useful, such as in the Peony-article where I included three galleries: one for different stages in the development, one for as many species as images where available for and one containing an image of each of the six flower types in cultivars. Anyway, could I ask you to have another look at the Q.q.-article and push it a little bit further? Thanks in advance and kind regards, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 09:17, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

On 27 June 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hooded pitohui, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hooded pitohui. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Hooded pitohui), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Wikipedian at Large grant proposal needs volunteers and endorsements

I'm applying for a reasonably large Wikimedia Foundation grant to support a year of Wikipedian in Residence postings at a wide (and growing) range of institutions throughout the country. The grant has just gone live: NZ Wikipedian at Large

Are you interested in helping with any residencies or events around the country – at the moment just in the four main centres? If so, you can add yourself using the Volunteer button and say what you'd be keen to do. I really appreciated your help during the Women in Science event. AND/OR If you think a "Wikipedian at Large" is a good idea, please write a short endorsement, since you've participated in an event I've run. Capillus and rostris

Dear Sabine's Sunbird, in this edit you state that rostris means "bill" and capillus "head", but the proper Latin word for bill is rostrum and capillus actually means hair (of the head). I can not access full content of the source you have provided. Is explicitely stated in this source that rostris means bill and capillus means head? Thanks for the response,

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
