Sheriffs of Devon - date style to use

Hi Smalljim, over on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:High_Sheriff_of_Devon#New_style_or_old_style_years_before_1752? I am seeking some advice on dating issues - in particular around the use of old style or new style dates before 1752. I would welcome your thoughts over there if you have time to comment.NHSavage (talk) 09:39, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've posted a brief apologetic reply there. Best wishes for 2021.  —SMALLJIM  11:19, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Devon parishes

Over the last 11 or so years the number of missing parishes in Devon has been reduced significantly. You have also created some such as Merton, Devon as well as split some like Loxhore from the manor. There are only 4 left, see User:Crouch, Swale/Missing parishes (1)#Devon which you may be interested in. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:03, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the notice, but I'm pretty much retired from Wikipedia now. I do like the lists of surrounding parishes in the article leads though, by means of which one can take a virtual tour around the county. Expanding those would be another benefit, I think.  —SMALLJIM  23:16, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to use the OS linked data, see Monkton, Devon and perhaps it could be added by a bot. Wikipedia:Templates with red links/104 from 2011 lists 92 missing of which only 1 (Isle of Man) is still red but that is "Lands common to Axminster and Kilmington". How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Reverting spam links

Thanks for reverting spam links and apologies for messing up some of your fixes - I think I have restored all your edits correctly now and (after sorting out my incompetence) carried on reverting his edits all the way back. But if I have still made any errors do feel free to restore! Jonathan A Jones (talk) 16:51, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No problem - and especial thanks to you for completing the job that I did poorly by not looking beyond the 50 edits on his first user contributions page! I've just found and fixed two more on page 2, and using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:LinkSearch has confirmed that there are no more from this domain.  —Smalljim  19:17, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In the article Feudal land tenure in England, a lot of its original text having been created in 2011 by a now-blocked user and subject since to numerous edits, I notice that an anonymous user has started reinstating deleted material. Do you think a block is being evaded? Belle Fast (talk) 10:21, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Filmssssssssssss: I haven't had a warning like that for a while! I blocked User:Stuntrider99 and my block message was the first edit to their talk page, so it appears that has caused you to warn me in error.  —Smalljim  20:17, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, apologies for that Filmssssssssssss (talk) 20:20, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! The vandal is blocked and the talk page is blanked - that's all that really matters :)  —Smalljim  20:22, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think it might be a good idea to revoke talk page access here as well, given that the user is abusing it. JeffSpaceman (talk) 15:42, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - pipped to it by JBW.  —Smalljim  15:46, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Evening,

I've reinstated the block on Jerrykolt123 as despite your comment they went back to editing the article with no discussion. Blocked the other user as well as no valid exemption I could see to

WP:3RR and they'd been warned enough. Amortias (T)(C) 18:58, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply

Thanks, Amortias, for dealing with that for me. I really shouldn't take time off!  —Smalljim  21:59, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Blocks

Hey, thanks for the recent blocks you've done of accounts with with doxxing in the username. However, please can you not create a talk page for those accounts when you block them? It just spreads the username around even more places for the OS team to suppress. Thanks! stwalkerster (talk) 21:13, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yo

Hi Jim, those Egyptian/North African IPs are proxies. You can safely hard block them for a nice long time so that the intended target can't cycle back through previous IPs. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:33, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ta. Will do.  —Smalljim  19:34, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sock again.

Hi, Jim. The user account User:WelshDragoon19 I assume, is a sock that is making mass reverts on the page Vivienne Martin (actress). Is it possible for you to block the account and protect the page? I added a report on RPP. Thanks. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 19:39, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I see that you have blocked the account for 31 hours. Given the sockpuppetry at play here, it might be a good idea to up the block to an indef. JeffSpaceman (talk) 19:49, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I quickly applied that block to stop the edit warring. I'll look into it.  —Smalljim  19:50, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ichthyotitan seems to be a target of constant vandalization. Can you consider putting temp protection on it? Perfecnot (talk) 22:23, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
