congratulations! - today in memory of the birthday of a friend who showed me art such as this, and of Vami --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:03, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I love art, and those yellow flowers, which are gorgeous! But your friend was also a booklover, and understood the need for technology. People's complexities are fascinating. SusunW (talk) 15:02, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! Rossini's Petite messe solennelle was premiered on 14 March 1864, - when I listen to the desolate Agnus Dei I think of Vami. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:02, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a beautiful song. Loss is never easy. We recently lost our dear friend in Paris, who lived with us right after we got married, decades ago. Everything makes me think of her. SusunW (talk) 13:54, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for sharing. - A hard loss happened to a woman I knew little but who is close to a dear friend: her son was attacked with a knife, and after several days died, in his fourties. - What I came to say: I uploaded vacation pics (from back home), at least the first day, - and remember Aribert Reimann, a story with a dramatic opera trailer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:21, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
a few new pics, and two people for DYK --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:36, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Those mountains and waterfall are breathtaking. I love the gatitos (cats) and daisies. No idea why daisies always make me happy. I guess because they look like sunshine, because I don't think they smell good. LOL SusunW (talk) 16:26, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, and how do you like the calf in the mist and the chocolate cake? ... and a story of collaboration? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:06, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He's adorable, especially with those little cowlicks on his head. You know I love cows. Interesting on the collaboration that they used live and taped sounds to enhance the production. SusunW (talk) 22:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - I listen to Bach's St John Passion today, - 300 years after it was first performed. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:19, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Two days later in time, Bach music for Easter! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:42, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lovely, lovely, lovely. I definitely love Bach! SusunW (talk) 14:03, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FAC reviewing

Your reviews are wonderful. The very model of what the perfect FAC review should look like. Sadly I can't use them as such for other reviewers, as they would despair and give up.

Another, by a first-timer, which may or may not interest you - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Goodness, is it beer o'clock already! Gog the Mild (talk) 19:34, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Gog the Mild Thank you! My reviews are truly hard won and I am never sure if they are even slightly helpful. Even when doing one for an editor who knows me and gets how my mind works, I struggle. But I do genuinely try to push myself to do them. I shall look at her. Not today and maybe not even tomorrow, but this week. I promise. SusunW (talk) 19:49, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I wasn't asking that you review this, merely pointing it out as one which may be of interest to you. Feel free to skip it. And it has just been nominated, so if you do look it over there is no rush. That said, I cannot think of a better introduction to FAC than a review from you. Gog the Mild (talk) 20:00, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I totally get that Gog the Mild. I honestly appreciate that you take the time to tell me about ones that might interest me. I put a placemarker there. She's important and I want to look at it. Right now, editing is sporadic, as I said. It is HOT (even for me). We've had no water going on 6 days. External pipes blown with a compressor, some replaced, and pump replaced. Plumber is now possibly considering opening the wall with a sledge hammer (literally). *sigh* SusunW (talk) 20:05, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! Gog the Mild (talk) 20:08, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We now have water in the back yard!, so obviously it is something in the lines/pipes. We don't have water towers here, only individual tinacas (tanks on the roof which create pressure by gravity). Replacing the pump improved the water flowing from the city to the tinaca, but hasn't fixed the problem, so... I guess I will be hosing off in the back yard tonight. Still hauling buckets to flush. Life is always an adventure! SusunW (talk) 20:17, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mmm. Sounds too much like that Chinese curse. Gog the Mild (talk) 20:20, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
LOL. SusunW (talk) 20:23, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gog the Mild I've started but honestly think it is no where near ready. Way too many unsourced things in even the first section. I don't have any idea how a withdrawal works, but I suggested it be withdrawn and submitted to peer review so that the editor can get help to bring it up to the level it needs to be. Is that a bad suggestion? I'm quite happy to carry on at the FAN page, but I fear my comments will be excessively long, and I do mean excessive. SusunW (talk) 22:56, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is a sensible suggestion and following it would be best for all concerned, especially the nominator. If the FAC effectively turns into a PR, it is likely to get archived anyway. The nominator seems to have by passed PR, GoCER and finding a mentor, all of which are setting a nomination up to fail. Gog the Mild (talk) 23:09, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Regina Khayatt

Hi! No rush on this -the article is fine as is- but if perchance you have access to a source that I don't and if you happen to find a year of death for Regina Khayatt, I'd be appreciative. Thanks and happy spring! Rosiestep (talk) 13:59, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Good to see you here Rosiestep. Hope all is well. We're in the midst of full-on summer, it's been over 100F for 3 weeks. But, the good news is that I finally have water! Woo hoo! I think she died in 1942. I can only see a snippet of this source and can't find an open access one, but maybe you have access to it? From what I can see, admittedly not much, searching her name says "In 1920 Mrs. Regina Khayan (Wissa’s daughter) was invited to attend a meeting of the Executive committee of the World YWCA in Geneva…" then searching 1942, yields "Mrs. Khayatt" passed on the presidency of the YWCA to her daughter-in-law, p. 254 so it looks promising. Looking in the search of Hathitrust's version, she is clearly prominent in the book. Worldcat shows numerous copies in California libraries. If you can't find it in a library or an open access version (3 editions per World cat), maybe the RX can obtain at least that page for you? SusunW (talk) 15:08, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! Don't know why I didn't find this previously with my searching, but, yes, I can see this source and that she died in 1942.
Oh my! You didn't have water? I live out in the tules, so it's not so uncommon here, but I didn't realize it could happen in your parts. Happy to hear that you do now. How long was it out? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:10, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to help Rosiestep and even gladder that you could see the source. I searched "Regina Khayatt, died", and that worked. No water for most of a week. Apparently both pumps failed at the same time. But it took a lot of work to figure that out. Plumbing here is really, really complicated. We have no water towers, merely tinacas on the roof (giant tanks that make pressure through gravity). Pipes are wrapped around the exterior of the house, which leaves them subject to the high humidity and heat, so PVC ones become brittle and metal ones rust. We have soft limestone bedrock, which means that calcium scale must be cleaned out of the lines every 4-6 months. The plumber did all the normal stuff, blowing out the pipes, treating them with acid, and replacing some pipes and the main pump. That got me water to the back yard and most of the house. He finally realized up on the roof while checking the tinaca, that there was a second pump to the front of the house. After we tested it, it was obvious that it was not working either. Yesterday he replaced that and finally, I have water throughout the house. SusunW (talk) 16:20, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! What a vivid description of a system I had no idea existed. Of course, every household water system has to be adapted to its environment and what's unique in one place is common elsewhere. It would be nice if WP had an article about this, with photos from various countries, e.g. [[Household waterpump systems]]. Or maybe this is just so common that no one but me finds it interesting and it wouldn't meet
WP:N. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:37, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply
]
Rosiestep you make me smile, I find it fascinating too. In Belize the toilet waste pipe goes out the wall, not through the floor. So a toilet is almost always located on an exterior wall there. That was surprising to me. Pouring acid into the lines (both in Belize and here) seemed pretty sketchy, but it's widely done. Foreigners from the Global North really seem to fear electric shower heads, which they call suicide showers, but they too are widely used, and safe. I have one in my front bathroom. I actually think proving notability would be pretty easy as access to water is a thing everywhere. SusunW (talk) 16:52, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No article about tinacos on EN-WP, nor on ES-WP. Oh well. Not yet. These images were helpful for me, so maybe someone who shares my type of curiosity would find them useful, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:16, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rosiestep The one at my house looks like the lower one. This photo shows that here, an older concrete model which is horizontal is also common. Another name for them is es:Cisterna, but here the cistern is below ground or at ground level and the tinaco is on the roof. Basically the water comes from the city into the cistern and then is pumped up to the tinaco on the roof. I noted on that es.WP page, they have a water tower in Jalisco labeled as a tinaco. I know of no water towers in Yucatan, but maybe there are some, somewhere? Which makes me wonder about Colonia Aleman. It's the only neighborhood here that has an actual sewer system like in the US. It was a planned worker's neighborhood built in the 1950s. All of the other neighborhoods have individual septic tanks. It is generally said that the soft limestone bedrock makes US style systems impractical. (And yes, we never flush toilet paper). SusunW (talk) 17:46, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I like to see Appalachian Spring on the Main page today (not by me, just interested and reviewed, and a bit proud that I brought the woman's pic to lead and Main page), and I also made it my story. - How do you like the statue (see places)? I was undecided so show three versions ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:19, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I did not know of the ballet, but obviously know who Graham was. Cool article and photo. Love the statue. My favorite view is the 3/4 profile with the tree and bay behind her. Makes the statue more prominent. SusunW (talk) 17:34, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - Today I see Marian Anderson as my top story (by NBC, 1939), and below (on my talk) three people with raised arms, - and the place is the cherry blossom in Frauenstein. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:48, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I love Marian Anderson, who was admired by Mahalia Jackson. The cherry blossoms remind me of dogwood/redbud season in Oklahoma. Beautiful. SusunW (talk) 17:17, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I love dogwoods - and we don't have them, but plum tree blossom, for Kalevi Kiviniemi in the snow - see my talk --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:12, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My story today is about a piece composed for the Second Sunday after Easter 300 years ago, and I just returned from a (long) opera about the same age, with soprano Pretty Yende --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:22, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Very cool. My story today is that I have had no internet since yesterday. Feeling very "behind". SusunW (talk) 18:51, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fran Leeper Buss

Hello SusunW, I hope you are really well and enjoying your African biography chain!

You may remember there was talk on the WiR page of a biography on Maria Elena Lucas? Once I started it as a word doc, I realised that her profile would not really exist publicly if it hadn't been for

Fran Leeper Buss . So I have had a go at a page for her. It is a bit thin and I remember you said you might be able to offer a little help in the way of sources. If you had a minute...no hurry..could you take a look and see what you think? Thanks if you can! Balance person (talk) 15:14, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply
]

Balance person I'll look at this first thing tomorrow. SusunW (talk) 23:45, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Balance person I love this story. It's like when I was doing Eunice Foote and discovered Elizabeth Wagner Reed, so I had to write her too. On Buss, I noted that her children's names are Buss and Leeper, which tells me those were her married names. So I checked family search, which led me to her mom's obit, Wilma Irene (née Richardson) Barker. That in turn led me to her father's name C. Francis "Frank" Barker. (The C stands for Clyde). This says she attended Iowa State Teacher's College, First marriage says both of them were students at the University of Iowa. This says hubby graduated in 1969 and they were living in Colorado. I know it is her husband because This says his parents were M/M Lowell Leeper, same as in the marriage notice, although both of these say he was from Lineville. So did she go with him to Philadelphia becomes the question. Still searching. SusunW (talk) 16:20, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
She earned her bachelor's in 1964 and I am positive it is her because the address matches this birth record with her husband's name. This and this give info about the work at the crisis center. The latter one also tells us she was not remarried in August 1972, but was by October, when this appeared. About six months later, her new husband had to go to jail for conscientious objection to the Vietnam War. Weirdly, I find nothing in New Mexico, but I'll try another newspaper database in a bit. Archive.org has this, this, this. SusunW (talk) 17:25, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Photo is probably available if you want it. That article and this one talk about them both being hired for a counseling job in NM. Another possible photo, but not as good IMO, although the article itself is fabulous. She taught women's studies!!!! at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Book review. There's also a lot at Jstor from the WP library. I hope these help. If you need more, please ask. I am happy to help. I'm going to check out the photo, so one more message will follow. SusunW (talk) 18:26, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, Balance person on the 11 April 1975 photo. I don't see anything on the photo itself that indicates a copyright, nor a photographer name. The masthead has no verbiage or copyright mark, nor does the publishing notice. Checking the copyright catalog for 1975, there are no entries in Periodicals for the Las Vegas Optic. All of that means that the photograph can be uploaded with the license {{PD-US-no notice}}. As a special bonus, while I was looking for these details, I ran across this on Maria Elena Lucas, one part of the article is about her, the other about Buss's book. It's in Spanish, but you should be able to use google translate and your camera on your phone. part 1, part 2 SusunW (talk) 18:54, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My goodness you are a complete miracle! Thank you so so much. I will have to find out more about all the sources you use as they are so rich and productive! I will start popping in your citations/references now and will do more tomorrow. Thank you again! I have never added a photo so that will take a little study. I had been planning to learn that soon anyway! Balance person (talk) 19:00, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Balance person All of those, except archive.org are through the Wikipedia library. As for the photo, I am not technically inclined and can't do anything other than clip and upload. My friend GRuban has magic wands and skills (maybe fairy dust, or spells?) to lighten, brighten, flip and do stuff I have no clue how to do. There should be a clipping tool on your computer that allows you to clip the photo from the rest of the article and save it. Then at the top of a page to the left of the Wikipedia world icon are 3 lines (not the 3 lines next to your user name, above that) and if you push that one option is upload a file. Choose that and then "Upload a freely licensed file". Follow the instructions and use the license I gave you above. If you get stuck, let me know, or ask George. He's really helpful ;) SusunW (talk) 19:21, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi SusunW! I have enough edits now to get into the wikipedia library but am uncertain how I get to newspaper articles such as the ones you found about Fran Leeper Buss from newspaper.com. and newspaper archive etc. I have put these phrases/ organisations' names into the search box but don't get anywhere near news articles. It is probably staring me right in the face but I can't see it at the mo! Balance person (talk) 09:29, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Balance person No worries. You only need six months editing time and 500 edits to sign up. Sign in to the WP library. At the top of the page is a search bar that only searches EBSCO. You might want to search that database, but usually I know what database I am looking for. Beneath that are a bunch of different resources (mostly in alphabetical order). Scroll down to say newspapers.com or newspaperarchive.com (if she were British, there is a British Newspaper archive tab). Pick newspapers.com and hit the button marked "access collection". Most collections do not require any additional steps, but to clip newspaper articles, you need to then go to the top right corner and create a user login. Once you have done that enter "Fran Buss" in the search bar that says keyword. You will see a bunch of articles appear. (If needed, you can narrow the location or date - the top boxes don't seem to work anymore - by scrolling down to the right side and adjusting the date range or a particular state. You can also change the country from the default of US to the UK, Canada, etc.)
Click on the first article that pops up. If it is one you want, at the top right there will be a clip and more button that allows you to select text, add a description and then save. A new box will appear at the right. Type a name for the clipping (I usually put the author and title so it's easy to paste into my citation.) and press save. In that box a blue link will appear to the clipping. Press it and it will take you off of the newspaper full page and to the clipping. Sometimes you will find someone else has already clipped an article, you don't have to reclip, just press the blue link. Once you get the clipping link at the top, it will look like this https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/article/arizona-daily-star-buss-fran-poor-wome/145343829/. Change it to <https://www.newspapers.com/article/arizona-daily-star-buss-fran-poor-wome/145343829/ and use that changed link in your article. (No worries if you forget to take out the wikipedialibrary part, a bot will fix it.) Newspaperarchive.com and the British newspaper collection work the same way, in that you must create a separate login to clip. Sounds complicated, but you'll get the hang of it fairly quickly I think. For other sources like Jstor or Oxford U Press, you just search and download the article, no extra steps required, except taking out the WP library proxy. Let me know if you get stuck. SusunW (talk) 13:03, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for your kind time and trouble! I am just off out but have saved your instructions and will work through them tomorrow to practice. Then I can use them for Maria Elena Lucas! I really appreciate your teaching. I have so much to learn!! Balance person (talk) 13:14, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are very welcome, Balance person. WP technology to me isn't remotely intuitive, so you will see on my user page I have a bunch of notes to myself about how to do stuff. . Feel free to ask any time. If I don't know, I probably know someone who knows, because the technical part is often above my skill level. SusunW (talk) 13:18, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think we now have a workable first version of this. When I have time, I'll add those that are missing from Category:Women's studies academics but I think it would now be useful to add a few photos. Perhaps you could help with this as you certainly know who deserves to be highlighted. You may also have other suggestions on how the list could be improved. Over the next few days I'll try to write some new biographies.--Ipigott (talk) 18:40, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Ipigott I just finished Monika Triest and tried to add her and her photo to the list. I can add more, but I wanted to ask about placement. Obviously, she's Belgian, but she never started women's studies programs in Belgium, instead at the University of Cincinnati and University of Amsterdam. So where should her photo go and since it overlaps other countries is that bad? SusunW (talk) 23:44, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding our first photo. I don't think it matters too much where they are placed but it would be good to have photos of some of the more prominent figures from the early stages as well as some of those who stand out today. Perhaps you can add some yourself or let me know who deserves to be covered. It might also be useful to have some group photos, for example of pertinent conferences or meetings if these can be found.--Ipigott (talk) 05:49, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott The problem is going to be the time frames. A lot of the women don't have photos, or if they do they are fair use. Powerhouses like Argentine Ana Amado, or Austrian Edith Saurer, or Bulgarian Krassimira Daskalova or Dutch Francisca de Haan don't have useable photos. I went through the list and found a few Florence Thomas, Rada Borić, Andrea Pető, Erella Shadmi, Gloria Wekker, Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí, Flora Botton, Patricia Mohammed, Mollie C. Davis that have photos we can use, if you like them? SusunW (talk) 14:27, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help, Susun. I've added most of these and moved the TOC left so that the Belgian image can be next to Belgium. Lots of room for many more if they can be found. There are still many more women we should include in the list.--Ipigott (talk) 14:56, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, many. Poco e poco. SusunW (talk) 15:04, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

is at FAC. Just in case. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:33, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Gog the Mild: Interested and I would love to, but not sure I'll get to it. Hip deep in the Adichie Peer Review and working on articles for women's studies month, which I think is one of our most critical editathons at WIR. Without the women who created the field, none of the articles about women that now are written would have been possible. Best I can say is I'll try. SusunW (talk) 16:38, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Ganesha usually submits polished work to FAC, and despite being up for less than 24 hours, it is already well into its second review. Gog the Mild (talk) 17:38, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep an eye on it for me, if you will Gog the Mild. If you need me, I'll do it, but as I said previously I do think Adichie is really important and should be done well, so focusing there. SusunW (talk) 17:52, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. (I am reviewing it myself.) Gog the Mild (talk) 17:53, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
