Though we have a massive snowstorm coming up, spring is just around the corner! Personally, I am looking forward to warmer weather.

Hi. I've given this an edit and will nominate for GA in a day or two. I was wondering if you still had the books or you could find the isbn number of the ones I've missed on world cat and fill out the remaining books of the bibliography with those cite templates? The image which is confusing me

As I thought. So why then is that photo at the top of production some place in Palestine which says filming site? Can you try to fill out those books in the next day or two, it's currently at GAR :-] Also can you see if some of those NY Times sources have urls online?   • I have no idea why that picture is there. I didn't add it, and it wasn't in the last version I worked on (21 April 2012). I can't find any reference to location filming in Israel. I've come across original research that claims that this picture was taken in Israel in 1958 near the village of Lifta, and shows Messala's legion marching on Jerusalem. There is also original research claiming that the images of the Maccabean tombs near Kidron (which Messala passes) are not matte paintings but also from the Israeli location shooting. I just can't find neutral, reliable-source references for any of that. - Tim1965 (talk) 19:11, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Given the period (not too long after the 1948 conflict) I'd find it highly dubious an American film team would choose to shoot in Israel, it would be sort of like Argo wouldn't it? That photo is baffling me though, I've removed it anyway. BTW I just watched Wyler's next film after Ben Hur, The Children's Hour, terrific film!!   • I found all the remaining book ISBNs and URLs I could find. Google seems to have lost the Frayling URL (there's a "error 404 page not found"). The Kaplan URL links to the 2000 reprint edition, not the 1999 edition, but I hope that is all right. (They should be the same, as it's a reprint not a new edition.) BTW, I think Wyler's The Best Years of Our Lives is a stunning film. - Tim1965 (talk) 20:28, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

By the way, there are 26 images of the Ben-Hur location shooting in Israel from 1958 in the Harvard University image library here [1]. It's obvious it's really Israel (see the Israeli ambulance image). But I don't know how to incorporate that into the article without violating Original Research restrictions. - Tim1965 (talk) 20:34, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
If there's definitely no source which says they filmed in Israel a efn| note linking to that page (which actually show up as a coding error on PC) or link to photo archives in Israel stating that it was evidently a shooting location although no known book documents it would be appropriate. Wyler's one of my favourite film directors for sure, but Best Years was actually the only one I wans't too keen on, I found it a little boring admittedly. It's one I must see again, when I saw it I wasn't too up on Wyler. I didn't think much of Citizen Kane on first viewing either and I see its genuis now and consider it within my top 10! Have you seen Ikiru? That's a good candidate for best film ever, at least in terms of humanity, amazingly touching film. I was thinking of going over the Audrey Hepburn article sometime and getting it up to GA status. Would you be interested?♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:46, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

On The Children's Hour it would be great if you could use Template:Sfn for citations. When you click on the page note it highlights the book in bibliography and you don't have to ref bunch. See one of my articles like The Great Ziegfeld or something for how it works. {sfn|author|year|page number} and then ref=harv in the books in bibliography. Let me know when you think you've expanded that article and I'll try to add to it. This is useful for drawing up citations from google book sources.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:20, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

So, I solved and did not solve the Israel thing. NY Times claims there was second unit footage shot. But AFI says "permit revoked" but doesn't say when; AFI definitely says no footage made it into the final film. Conflict of sources? Maybe, maybe not. I put both into the article. hey! Nice one. BTW I've just put in a request for a grant for books here. I gather you're in the US not UK though, I don't think they do it in the US. It would be great to work with you on getting some articles like Sunset Boulevard and any Kubrick film like Clockwork etc up to GA status. I'm certain that you share a similar fine taste in cinema! A long term goal of mine is to get Oscar winners up to GA status. I've just about prepared Wings (1927 film) for GA this morning. Currently gunning for GA if you're interested... Can you find anything more on it? I was wondering if you have access to either the Farmer or 2006 Wellman books on the film. In google books they appeared to be the most resourceful aside from the book I could fully access on it. Talk:Ben-Hur (1959 film)/GA2 has begun. I think I'll split the production into a separate article and then work on condensing it down. I rather liked the length but I do think it's probably too much for a comfortable summary of the film. Don't worry, no information will be lost in the cutting.   • I have problems with Wikipedians when they (and the article guidelines) say "the article is too long to be encyclopedic." Print encyclopedias have page sizes, and printers can only bind so many pages together into a folio (in multiples of four) before they must create a new folio. Due to the costs of printing, paper, typesetting, and the like, and due to the limitations of hardcover book binding, this limits a volume of an encyclopedia to about 430 pages. These limitations forced encyclopedias to limit article length, so that the average article length is only about 650 words. Furthermore, encyclopedias must judge what the market will bear. Although a 500-volume encyclopedia might be desireable (with lengthy articles and extensive references), it would be far too expensive and thus never sell. So encyclopedia companies (all of them for-profit) further limited the size of their publications based on demand. Thus, "encyclopedic" is defined by the limitations of printing and cost, and what the market will bear. NONE of these are real considerations online. Yet, contributors and guidelines at Wikipedia continue to define "encyclopedic" in terms of printed works themselves based on antiquated, outdated mechanical printing and the supply-demand marketplace. I had a feeling you'd not be happy with the condensing. But the reviewer wasn't the only one who thought it was too bloated. A number of very experienced film editors said the same thing and that "no article really needs to be 12,000 words". Invitation to Library of Congress Africa Collection Editathon

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

I think we can get this up to GA with limited work, and without cutting :-). It's a great film and the article is already very good, it mainly needs an expansion of the lead, a minor copyedit and source checking/overhaul for verification. Can you do me a favour and format some of the books which have google book previews with urls and any of the newspapers if possible? http://reftag.appspot.com/ is useful for remaking them with google book url links. If you just write ref=harv in the cite books in biblio it'll do the same thing! If you can ensure all of the books are placed in the bibliography and try to find some of the page numbers it should be ready for GA! Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, Billings, Montana, Great Falls, Montana and Butte, Montana. Most/all the photos and sometimes minor copyedits for Polson, Montana, Anaconda, Montana, First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park, Montana ExpoPark, Lewis and Clark County Hospital Historic District, Home of Peace Cemetery (Helena, Montana), Ted's Montana Grill, Kluge House, and today will be adding photos to MacDonald Pass. There are probably others I've popped by on. Also added a bunch of county courthouse photos, some federal courthouse photos, etc. If that doesn't give you a rough idea, ask Tim about more of my Montana photo uploads at commons! I've worked on some of Mike Cline's articles too. Most of the historic ones were in collaboration with the now-retired PumpkinSky, so I've kind of lost momentum absent a co-collaborator, but heh... Two edit-a-thons coming up!

This is why I hate GA reviews. They're haphazard. No standards at all. If you get a good reviewer, you're fine (even if there are huge problems with the article). If you get a dolt, you are in for some hair-pulling stress and potential disaster. It's why I tend to stop at B class. I just don't want the hassle. That's why I usually try to get a competent, efficient reviewer. Unfortunately at times somebody snaps up the review before they can get to it which is what happened here...   • I'll try this weekend. Got heat exhaustion yesterday while photographing John Philip Sousa Bridge and Barney Circle, although I was only out for an hour, which makes me wonder how I got heat stroke.   • Expat Montanans don't do well in heat and humidity, be careful out there, Tim! FWIW, I spent a week in North Carolina living on saltine crackers and Gatorade at 50% dilution, was the only way I could both hydrate without screwing up electrolyte balance and not puke up everything that went into my stomach. But on the other hand, I survived 4th of July 1993 on the National Mall with a 120 degree heat index with no ill effects - though spent a lot of time in the various Smithsonians during the day... gotta love A/C. Seeing the fireworks while sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial still ranks as one of my top 5 Fourth of Julys ever. Hey Tim1965, I have a horse favor to ask of you, @Dr. Blofeld: and your other talk page stalkers: I helped get California Chrome to GA and damn if the horse didn't win the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Now it's getting traffic like this! I'm asking the responsible and GA/FA-savvy editors I know to watchlist the article to help patrol for vandals, we're getting them, and it's going to be worse next week as we come up on the 2014 Preakness Stakes. (When in doubt, revert to whatever my last version is, it will be "clean" and I can sift through to add any good new material) While you are at it, can you also watchlist Oxbow (horse), which will be TFA on Preakness day, and I anticipate possible vandal problems there too because the horse's jockey and trainer are both being targeted by PETA for some unfortunate "campfire talk" caught on tape last year. So, Dr. Blofeld, do you want to keep those OCLC and ISSN numbers in the bibliography? I think they are fairly useless. OCLC numbers next to an ISBN is repetitive, and should come out. And since all the newspaper/trade magazine cites are coming out of the bibliography anyway and going into footnotes, I think the OCLC numbers should get dumped. I feel better. Easily tired, which my doctor says is pretty common. He took blood and is running a battery of tests, the results of which I'll learn late today. He took me off a diuretic (which I took for blood pressure) and put me on something else, and that might help too.   • Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.
