When to propose a merger

There are three types of mergers on Wikipedia:

1): Mergers that are so obviously necessary and appropriate that no one is expected to object;
2): Mergers that would benefit from discussion with the other editors at the affected articles' Talk page about whether and/or how to perform the merge; and
3): Mergers that are controversial, potentially difficult to carry out, or where at least one affected article is either rated Class B or higher or is over 100K in size will need assistance from uninvolved editor(s) in determining whether to merge the pages.

If the pages that you would like to merge fall into the type 1 group above, then it is not necessary to propose a merger at all. You should

boldly
do the merger now, without formally proposing it. (In the event that someone unexpectedly objects, then the merger can be undone easily, and you can formally propose the merger for discussion at that time.)

How to propose a merger

If the merge falls into the type 2 group or type 3 group above, then proposing a merger can be done in three steps (as the proposer, you should still be willing to carry-out a type 2 merge):

See:

Copy and Paste easy merge templates
for easy to follow shortcuts of the above procedure.

Requests for merge assistance and feedback

If you need outside feedback regarding mergers that are either tricky or of a controversial nature, please do the following:

  • Tag the article as shown above
  • Create a discussion as shown above
  • Notify the talk page of the appropriate Wikiproject to get knowledgeable people to comment on it. (To find out which Wikiproject the page is associated with, check the associated talk page. It should be tagged with a template, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey.)
  • If there is consensus to merge, but the merge is difficult, request help at Merge Talk for assistance.

For other topics:

NOTE: Please do not re-list old merge proposals that are already tagged and in the "to Merge" queue (including requests made up to two years ago), as these will be handled as we get to them. -Project Merge

If you need assistance with proposing a merge, list it below and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the merge completed, as there is a large merge backlog. After a merge is listed properly, move it to the "Answered requests" or "Awaiting consensus" sections below as appropriate.

Merge requests

Please list new requests at the bottom of New Requests section.

1) Precede your request with *'''Merge''' (←Copy and Paste it);
2) Enter (at least) a link to the article to be redirected in the
edit summary
;
3) Please legitimize your request by signing each listing or comment by typing four tildes (~~~~); remember, unsigned requests may be ignored.
4) Please consider helping the project and completing a merge request from one of the categories list at the bottom of this page. Thank you.

NEW REQUESTS

______
  • Merge Bride kidnapping in Kazakhstan into Ala kachuu. The Kazakh terminology used is similar to that of the Kyrgyz term and is the same practice that is done in Kyrgyzstan. I feel that a few sections can be used for applications and laws against bride kidnappin in each of the two countries. Please review and make the appropriate decisions, thank you! 202.94.70.51 (talk) 09:46, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge
    Wikipedia is not a memorial and does not have articles on any of the other teachers killed in the massacre or the shooter himself. There is nothing special about Soto that makes her worthy of having her own article. 2603:7000:26F0:74B0:CF7:8D75:FA49:8724 (talk) 23:52, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply
    ]
  • Merge Greatest Hits! Part 1 into The Party Album (Vengaboys album). These are the same album, and a different album title (more specifically, one used in the group's country of origin) doesn't warranty a seperate page. On another note, the "standard" tracklist isn't listed on the (main) Party Album page and it has to link to the other, redundant page to display it. TapLover (talk) 08:27, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge
    Quasi alliance into Quasi-alliance. Both pages cover the same thing but the first page is significantly empty in terms of content. 103.24.77.51 (talk) 15:15, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply
    ]
  • Merge List of fictional artificial intelligences into List of fictional computers. There is no clear criterion to distinguish when a computing device belongs on the fictional computers list versus the fictional artificial intelligences list, and many of the fictional computers are in fact fictional artificial intelligences. Suggest merging to the computers list as that list is significantly more robust. Dash77 (talk) 22:58, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge
    WP:POVFORK. A merge discussion also occurred on Zoonotic origins of COVID-19's talk with there seemingly being consensus developing for a merge only for it to go stale and for nothing to happen. Recently a merge discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zoonotic origins of COVID-19 came to no consensus and the closing admin directed discussion back to the talk page. TarnishedPathtalk 11:44, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply
    ]
  • Merge: Chicago Board Options Exchange into Cboe Global Markets. These two articles are referring to the same entity. The Chicago Board Options Exchange became CBOE Holdings at the time of its IPO in 2010. In 2017, CBOE Holdings rebranded as Cboe Global Markets. At that point the Chicago Board Options Exchange / CBOE stopped existing. There is no separate CBOE exchange or legal entity, and there are no accurate contemporary media mentions of "Chicago Board Options Exchange" because, again, that entity doesn't exist anymore. To be clear, I work for Cboe and have been making article edits requests on the Cboe Global Markets Talk page. I have a pending request there about updating the History section that would further clarify this issue. Spencer at Cboe (talk) 21:44, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge
    Ford-Fulkerson algorithm. EKA is merely an implementation of FFA that specifies breadth-first search. It's like saying Dijkstra's algorithm with a binary heap and Dijkstra with a Fibonacci heap are two different algorithms. Article on EKA is largely similar and belongs in FFA. IntGrah (talk) 23:04, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply
    ]
  • Merge: Te Whanganui-a-Tara into Wellington Harbour. These pages are directed to the same subject, with Te Whanganui-a-Tara being the Māori name for the harbour. The information on the Te Whanganui-a-Tara page not already included on the Wellington Harbour page, such as the mythology section, could be readily incorporated into that page. -Radicuil (talk) 01:04, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AWAITING CONSENSUS

After all involved articles are tagged for merger discussion: the request should be added to the bottom of this section. This section can also be used if a proposal needs further discussion due to age or disagreement. All merger comments and discussions should be directed to the Discussion subsection of the targeted articles' talk page, not here. We can also attempt to get more people to comment on proposals.

______
  • Merge EagleCam into IM-1. I'm personally against this merge, and I'd like EagleCam to remain its own article, but the discussion is getting longer, less concise, and is heading towards a standstill / no consensus. I believe we could use some more opinions from diverse backgrounds to reach a consensus, even if it doesn't lead to the result I personally want. SpacePod9 (talk) 03:44, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Ultra-processed food and Hyperpalatable food into Nova classification. There are no real competing definitions of "ultra-processed food" to the Nova classification's definition, so there isn't really a need for a separate article. "Hyperpalability" is also a concept generally not discussed outside of the concept of "ultra-processed food", but as it does have an independent definition I'm more willing to be convinced it should be kept as a separate article. Discussion is here. I think this is where I'm meant to put this.--Eldomtom2 (talk) 18:22, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK into a new Asthma and Lung UK article. These two organisations have merged and now operate as a single organisation, Asthma + Lung UK (ie they are defunct as separate entities). I've mentioned this on their respective Talk pages and added merge banners to each of them, but I don't think I've heard anything on this (apologies if I've missed it!) - so am flagging it on this page. I have a draft article ready if needed. Any advice on next steps welcome! KTnow (talk) 14:10, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ANSWERED REQUESTS

After discussion concludes, completed requests should be moved here (to the top of this list). Please mark as {{Done}} (or {{merge done}} if merge has actually occurred), {{Not done}}, or {{Working}} when consensus has been reached.

______
  • Merge Acer Aspire laptops into Acer Aspire. The Laptop specific article already uses text from the primary article, and only offers specifications for specific laptop models, like a product line-up. The "Laptops" page has been a proposed merge as early as 2011, and I think it would make things more clear and succinct. 192.77.12.11 (talk) 04:46, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Articles are tagged and Merger Discussion area set-up >>>HERE<<<. Please join the discussion. GenQuest "scribble" 04:04, 31 December 2023 (UTC) [reply]
      •  Working merger approved, still needs to be performed. Choucas Bleu (T·C) 14:26, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Timeline of U2 to U2 The former article needs some work, and could easily be merged into the latter. The U2 timeline article is not great, and the U2 article could benefit from expanded history section. Geardona (talk) 02:56, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
