You can do that by blanking the draft and putting #REDIRECT [[Eucharist#Communion at home]] in it. Article reports conflicting (unsourced) information but I can only find non-conflicting sources.

(Sorry. Not sure if this is better suited for the article's Talk page, but I'm also asking generally.)

I'm working on getting sources for Robert Kinoshita's article. He made Robbie the Robot, and the article currently says Robby was "Created at a cost of anywhere between $125,000 and $1,000,000 — depending on which source is quoted ". Every source I've found has been in the $100k-$150 "reported"/"estimated" range. Nowhere near $1 million unless we're talking about inflation. Would it be better to remove the "and $1,000,000 — depending on which source is quoted" and just have the $100k-$150 range with multiple sources?

In situations where an article claims a wide range for something, but I can only find sources for something very different, what should I do? There may be actual sources with the extreme/outside values that I just haven't been able to fine, so I don't feel like I should remove it entirely. But it seems odd to me if I leave it with the sources giving a very limited range.

@Rourensu: I'd remove it, with an edit-summary explaining you can't find a source to justify a cost that high. If anyone knows one, they can put it back in, this time with the source. If you're feeling really timid or worried that your search may not have been sufficiently exhaustive, then by all means play it safe and put a message on the article's talk-page first, or a citation-needed tag, and wait a few days before zapping the offending information. But ultimately there is no place for material supported only by the vague feeling that there ought to be a source somewhere if only we could find it. Elemimele (talk) 00:03, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Citing Web sources from sites that are currently unavailable

I'm trying to add citations to the page Oksana Markarova, the current Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, but I'm running into an issue where the Ukrainian government sites that I would like to cite are down/not responding.

Unfortunately, the only copy of the webpage in question which details the time she spent in her position as Commissioner for Investment that I can find online are the ones that Google has cached - would it still be possible to add them as a citation followed by a Template:Dead link? Hey! Generally, I'd recommend checking out the information at Help:Archiving a source and seeing if Internet Archive had a copy. However, it doesn't seem to have a copy of that page yet. So, I'd mark it with {{Dead link}} and probably just leave the access date out of the citation entirely for now. I'm assuming the site is down from cyberattacks with the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, so I think it'll probably be back eventually when this all comes to some form of resolution. @Echohawkdown You can always archive the Google cache version and place that. The google cache version will eventually go away once the original version does, but the archived version will stay.

@Blaze Wolf: Thanks - I didn't have perms to queue up jobs for IAB (possibly because I need edits/contributions on MetaWiki first? Documentation was unclear). I've managed to access the page in question by using a VPN with an exit node in Ukraine, since Ukraine's Ministry of Finance has restricted access to their sites to Ukrainian IP addresses, per this article from Bloomberg (paywall).

I've updated the citation accordingly, but now I'm stuck with a different problem: the {{Dead link}} says it was dead as of Feb 2022, but the access date was 2022-03-01. Do I leave it as is? I've already left a note on the talk page about the Ministry of Finance's IP restriction policy, but I'm at a loss at how to reconcile the dates on this particular citation. IAbot inserting bad wayback links

I do not precisely follow the operational details of IAbot (I have no personal experience with bots whatsoever), but I noticed in the 4 March 2022 revision of Sexual intercourse that archive links for Google Books were added, even though such archive links generally do not seem to provide useful content, or at least don't provide the expected content. In some circumstances, they produce an error message, or they may produce a web page that doesn't render the book content that was present in the original link.

Either way, it seems like a bad idea to incorporate these dysfunctional archive links into Wikipedia. Does this indicate that IAbot was configured incorrectly, or does logic need to be incorporated into IAbot to bypass archives for certain kinds of links? Fabrickator (talk) 01:30, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello. Just recently, I self-requested a block, only for it to be lifted ~6 hours later.

However, I have this question: does "community good standing" mean no behavioral blocks/bans in the past 6 months, or no blocks/bans regardless of whether or not it was self-requested?

Please advise me whether there is a super admin for other languages on Wikipedia. If there is an unfair treatments by other Korean language admins to the users: i,e,) Concerning clear circumstantial evidence or , obvious violation of the rules on Wikipedia, it was generally disregarded if it happens to the specific users, however other users were blocked although it was quite vague circumstantial evidence. Hello, Goodtiming8871. Each language version of Wikipedia has its own policies and guidelines. If you are having difficulties on the Korean Wikipedia, then you will need to address those issues there. English Wikipedia editors and administrators have zero influence there, unless they are active contributors to that project. And very few of us are active there. Goodtiming8871: as Cullen has explained to you, nothing in English Wikipedia has any authority in another Wikipedia. English Wikipedia is the root of other languages of Wikipedia is true historically, but not for any current purpose. Your request is akin to saying "I have a problem with the Korean authorities: please tell me who in the British Government I should talk to". Hi, Goodtiming8871, traditionally the place to report systemic issues is Meta-wiki (Swedish and Croatian wikis are recent examples). Be prepared for a long process with counter-accusations. In the future, UCoC Enforcement and U4C may be an option. WMF/T&S did intervene with a conflict among Chinese and Hong Kong users, but in that case there were affiliates involved. The book is published by IGI Global, and since I'd never heard of that company I did a little research and found conflicting opinions on whether or not it was a reputable publisher. Advice for improving from failed GNG

Hello there. I have been working for a little while on a page for Anne Lister College, a new college at University of York. It has just been reviewed and has been removed for failing GNG. I am not trying to appeal against this judgement, but am just puzzled as to what steps to take next.

While the sources on the page are certainly closely related to the university, if not official sources, this is the case with all of the sources for the other college. Again, I am not saying that the review was wrong, but the information on this page I felt was better than on some of the other college's pages. For example,

Constantine College

has just two sources, both from the university.

Is there a way that I can copy all of the information from the old page onto a publicly accessible draft page for edits to happen until it is felt that the information is of a suitable level to meet GNG some resubmitted for review? I'm looking for a site which allows the public to collaborate on a "tree of knowledge"

I'm basically looking for a centralised tree of knowledge, where you can collaborate with the public to construct mind-maps within each topic As with Wiki pages - lots of hyperlinks, anyone can edit the articles. However, wikipedia presents information as long passages of text. Often it is easier to present information as a logical flowchart or mind map, rather than as passages of text. I'm familiar with the existence of specific 'wiki' sites, however that is not what I mean. I'm looking for a site containing "mind maps", rather than passages of text (as you see in a traditional wikipedia article)

I'm looking for a free, open site where the public can collaborate simultaneously to create a universal "Tree of Knowledge"

PetSematary182 an easy way to do it is this: First, search "User:PetSematary182" (and EXACTLY that) in the search bar. Then, a message will show up, saying "Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact name" and so on, then click "edit" and you can go on from there. Another way to do it is to search your talk page, in this case, "User talk:PetSematary182" in the search bar, and then click on the "User Page" tab, and the editor will automatically open. Once you have text in your user page, your user page link will appear blue. You can change your signature in Preferences (Like me :D), although I can't explain that right now because it's a long and complicated process. Anyway, I hope you have found this helpful. Hello, Harishnakerag. What you need to do first is to find some better sources. In order to establish that a subject meets Wikipedia's criteria for

significant coverage of the subject. It seems to me that you currently have not even one source which satisfies all three of these: the Business World looks the best, but it very much has the air of being based on a press release, and so does not meet the criterion of independence. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Hello, I'm Rym from Algeria. I have written an article about an Algerian food delivery service but it has been proposed for deletion, moved to the draftspace, then declined when I submitted it for review. Starting with the deletion proposal, they assumed that my article is promotional, and that I'm a SPA (single-purposed account). But I negated all the assumptions, and argued with what I've already stated in my user page; that I'm only interested in Algeria's digital and technological growth, which is rarely dealt with on Wikipedia, and that I'm also active in the French Wikipedia. They dropped the deletion but gave my article the Advertisement tag. That was last week, now they moved my article to the draftspace. Now thinking about it, the references in my article are all in Arabic and French since these are the main languages of Algeria, does this make my article unworthy of being on Wikipedia? I mean my sources are reliable and I have no business promoting the service yet are they not considered verifiable? About why my article hasn't been approved when submitted to review, they mentioned that it already exists, and I think it's some kind of cross namespace redirect problem, although I've proposed that draft redirect to speedy deletion. Well, looking at Draft:FoodBeeper, there are still several issues with the draft. As the tag said, some of your wordings are promotional: "projecting a diverse collection of menus", "The service has since expanded remarkably".

You did put several reliable sources, and as Hoary said, sources of all languages are permitted. You also seem to put a balance between secondary and primary sources (I may be horribly wrong, but from the layouts of the sources I judge such). However, many of your sentences are still unsourced; 13 I can count.

You need to also fix capitalization problems: for example, "Market Expansion" must be "Market expansion", and "covid-19" must be "COVID-19".

I won't assume that you are a paid editor, but I do think, like many others, that it is still far from being article-worthy. Things are only deleted for copyright violations if it's clear they're actually copied from an outside source, so just don't do that and you're good. I'm guessing that you are talking about an article about you: please be aware that it is not your page and you do not have any special level of control: in fact, quite the contrary: you are strongly discouraged from editing the article directly. If there is information on there that is wrong, please see

on the article's talk page, but you must understand that the article is there to summarise what independent sourcs have said about you, not for you to tell anybody what you want them to know. So if you provide a source (unconnected with you) for any information you want included, that is more likely to happen.

If you didn't mean this, then the only thing I can think of that you might mean is your User page: any Wikipedia editor may create a user page, on which they can put any information they like about themselves as a Wikipedia editor. A small amount or more general biographical infomation is acceptable, but not anything that looks promotional. See

The following doesn't all apply to you for THIS article, because of your COI, but I thought I would mention this anyway. The answer is, a core principle of Wikipedia is that all information in any article should be verifiable by the reader. That means that every fact asserted in the article needs a citation that is

significant coverage

of the subject. (Those words in blue are links for more information.) And the citations must be present in the article so the reader can easily see them to verify the information. Therefore, it does not take someone with inside knowledge to create or update an article -- anyone who can find published references can create or update an article on any subject, even if they are not experts in the field (although knowing the subject matter does help). Information coming from someone's personal knowledge can't be verified by a reader.

If an article writer/editor knows that something is true, it's OK to include the fact, as long as a citation is also included in-line with the article. That's just how things work here. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 05:12, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

AWB editing

Finally thought to ask a question at the Teahouse after many days. I have been using AWB for many days now. What I mostly do is fix new pages, using the source as new pages and then making out a list. But, AWB is supposed to be a much powerful tool. Actually the problem is with me. I cannot fully unleash the power of this super piece of software. I have read the manual of AWB, but it is just a detailed explanation of how to use it. The manual mainly contains information about all the different toolbars and options. But recently I have found out about the typo fixing feature, and have started using it well. But I want to know, what else I can do with this. I know many things can be done, and many people know what more can actually be done. I am under the mentorship of FormalDude, but he said that he doesn't have much knowledge about AWB. So I thought to ask the question at the Teahouse, to get information about AWB from multiple users. I would really be glad if some AWB expert user tells me what else I can do with this tool. Regards.

multi-tool

is a wonderful device, but no good if you want to hammer a nail into a piece of wood. I used AWB quite a lot a few years ago, but was (and still am) rather scared by the many areas I do not understand how to use, so I stay well-clear and you should too. If you do serious harm with it, you could be blocked from editing, so proceed with care. Looking at your edits with it, you seem to be using it as I did. If I remember rightly, I created a list of articles within a certain group or category, and attempted to fix all the typos and grammar errors within each one. I then focussed on fixing just one specific typo or grammatical issue (doesnt -> doesn't; 1960's -> 1960s; off of -> off, for example) across all articles. At that time, Lupin's spellchecker was working, and I used that to monitor live edits and then fixed errors particularly frequently-occurring typos with AWB that I first saw being flagged up by Lupin.

Bottom line: If you don't know what you're doing with elements of AWB, and can't find out how to do it properly - don't do it. Good luck with your journey. Nick Moyes (talk) 11:14, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

I thought you were talking about you pinging someone else, my bad. I understand your question now.

Maybe its something to do with how he signed his message. When pinging, you need to have the message singed in the same edit. If not, the ping won't work, even if you sign the edit after. The addition of a ping template and the signing (tlides) have to be in the same edit.

Sure! Here is my request from the "embassy," slightly edited: I speak very little German, although coincidentally I am learning the language. I am writing you about the German Wikipedia article "Boccia." In English, we call "Boccia" "Bocce" or "bocce ball." However, there seems to be a mistranslation. The article says the following sentence: „Seit 1984 ist Boccia eine paralympische Sportart.” This roughly translates to "Boccia has been a Paralympic sport since 1984." This is not quite correct: It is a confusion between what we call bocce ball and you call boccia. Since 1984, a Paralympic sport that is known as boccia (English Wikipedia article) in English and many other languages has been included in the Paralympic games. I have linked the English Wikipedia article for "Boccia." Boccia (the Paralympic sport) is a similar, but different sport than bocce ball. It has different rules, playing surfaces, and equipment. I believe that someone should make another article for the Paralympic sport of boccia like we have on the English Wikipedia, perhaps titled "Boccia (paralympische Sportart)". Pétanque is different than bocce, and it, as it should, has its own, separate article on here. Ugly Betty

I've been spending a lot of time editing down overlong plot summaries. I found my way to

Ugly Betty Season 3, where there's a LONG plot outline, followed by individual episode summaries which restate the same information much more succinctly. Then, just for comparison, I looked at other season pages for Ugly Betty, only to find the same setup on each of them. Easiest thing would be to delete the Plot sections altogether as unnecessarily duplicative. Writing about esports organizations..

I'm working on an article for Mazer Gaming, an esports organization. The draft has been reviewed and rejected. I used tournament brackets to provide org performances, but was told that the bracket host itself is a wiki, it's not a viable source. I understand the issue of the source was it in reference to anything substantial. But it was a tournament bracket.

I was told it was overly promotional. There is no mention of joining the organization or purchasing anything from the sponsors. I followed the build of articles about FaZe Clan and Team Liquid to make sure I didn't overstep.

Reviewer also mentioned bios about players were unnecessary, and this is where I feel the article wasn't truly read. There are no player bios. There are bios for management at the bottom above the references. But nothing for the players, and I made sure each of the sections were very clearly marked and separated.

If I could get another set of eye on this, it would be much appreciated.

To me, they all seem like smoke and mirrors -and this one is no exception- so you really are going to need far better sources. I'm not going to read them all, so which three independent ones can you come up with to demonstrate that Mazer Gaming meets our

If the article's about the organisation, all the tournaments it runs are mere trivia, so you'd need to cut everything out, and write solely about why this organisation is important. If it's the tournament that is notable, you'd need to focus on that, and show how the general mainstream media have taken note of your employer's organisation, and written about it in detail and in depth. Oh, none of the individuals who took part in these computer games are notable, and nowhere in your draft should there be any external links to Twitter accounts and so forth. They certainly seem similar, but my question would be: do these terms have a defined meaning in planning and conservation law? Both are unfamiliar to me here in the UK, but I am wary of supporting a merge of two different concepts. Neither article paints a clear picture of where in the world these terms apply. Both seem very US- based, and I would welcome seeing this clarified.

The approach I would recommend is to read

WP:MERGE

breaks this process down into small steps for you to follow.

It can take many weeks - or even much longer longer- to get a reasonable consensus to merge articles. You can hasten the process by going to a relevant

WP:WIKIPROJECT

and highlighting the discussion on the relevant talk page.

If all this seems too much, simply start a discussion on one page before going through the formal merge tagging, and see what response you get. Hi, I am a Wiki novice. I made edits to a page while not having a username. However on further consideration, I'd like those edits associated with my newly created username. I have undone the edits but obviously my IP address still remains on the version history. How do I remove this? I have seen some pages talk about this but it is far to complicated for me.

If an article reads as what the subject wants to say, it is almost always promotional: independent sources don't usually talk about a subject in the same way - and s how the independent sources talk about a company is all that Wikipedia is interested in. Transliteration

In India, almost all the Hindi and other languages that follows Devnagiri script words already spelled in English and are commonly used. Some user have been editing articles on Indian culture and replacing these English spelled words for Hindi to different Transliteration schemes. Is it possible to use it with the <math> tag? For example, if I want to find the circumference of a circle with $r=6.7cm$ , I'd use <math>C = 2 \pi r = {{#expr:2 * 3.14159 * 6.7}}</math>, but it gives an error.

RT TV - Curbing Spread of Misinformation coming from RUSSIA

Who can edit Wikipedia page for RT TV description page on Wikipedia, RT website and youtube channel. The RT TV youtube channel is managed with or by Bots, it is a propaganda dispensing channel that distorts facts and information about everything but now mainly Ukraine war. If you flipped countries mentioned and the story like, you might get it right but they are painting Ukraine as an aggressor and Russia as a victim. Their comments are all spit out from bots, fake accounts (I checked, many started right before or when war started) and empty profiles) they are all impersonating people who support Russian war, they supposedly come from all countries that are anti this war including America, Africa and Europe. This is insane. Their subscriptions to channel at 4.7M are fake again added through bots and every video you watch includes 1-2 facts then weaves false information changing stories, blaming Ukraine...they even blamed ukraine for bombarding their own schools and killing children. I have reported the channel to youtube/google and they restricted some videos but will do it for as long as it takes for humans not AI to block he channel. PLEASE do your part and update the wikipedia on RT TV to include information on misinformation, propaganda and rewriting history to rightfully discredit these sources of information. Go ahead and do your own research, it's so obvious, nothing is hidden. I have reported over 25 videos and the channel itself and am coming here for the wikipedia community to update information to make it know that these sources are not credible. If you make any comments that are no Pro russia under the videos, their bot instantly deletes them, in fact all external posts get deleted either automatically through the bot apps or manually but they definitely have moderators on that channel to make sure their propaganda doesn't get interrupted with truth bombs. All I as a viewer expect is truth. You can't get it on that channel, you never could but now things are taken to another level and Google is not yet paying attention. Landing photo removal

Hi. I have been hired by my local city government to clean up the brand for our city. We would like to remove the photo that is associated with Petal, MS on wiki. Currently when you google our town the first thing people see is a photo of complete disaster caused by a tornado that ripped through our city in 2017. We have cleaned our city up since then, we have a new mayor, new administration and we would really appreciate it if we could get this dang photo removed and replaced with something that is actually appealing. If people want to move here and they search our city, the first thing they see is wreckage. I have already remade them a google business landing page and I have uploaded a ton of new content in an effort to get the auto populated photo to replace itself. I tried to figure out how to remove it from wiki myself but apparently I didn't do it right. I am asking for help from anyone who might be able to assist with this. Welcome to the Teahouse, IP editor. Wikipedia articles don't exist to promote their subjects, although reasonable requests for image changes are likely to be considered. As Cordless Larry says, the picture was removed from the article a year ago: it has not been in Wikipedia since then. (It is still in Wikimedia Commons, and there is no reason why it should be deleted from there). What Google does with images iis outside the control of Wikipedia: the fact that Google displays it above an excerpt from Wikipedia is Google's doing, not Wikipedia's. (There is a "Feedback" button below it, whereby you could explain your concern to Google).

Probably the best thing for you to do is to take a better picture of the city yourself (so that it is your copyright) and upload it to Commons - there are some pictures already in

edit request on Talk:Petal, Mississippi asking that the image you have uploaded be added to the article. When that is done, in time Google will probably start displaying the image currently in the article, though as I say, we have no control over that. ColinFine (talk

I would also add that my husband is a senior staff writer for the largest newspaper in our county and sister county - he publishes news about the city of Petal daily and I Understand that wiki operates based on sourced info - but I watch my husbands news reach the masses daily and somehow this photo of tornado damage is still the chosen view of our city. There is not a lack of information, sources, photos, data, content for the city of Petal and its current state. Perhaps the tornado just went viral and that is why it is the main photo used? I just feel that it is unfortunate that because a tornado destroyed our town 5 years ago that we must continue having this wrecked photo appear by the name of the city on the internet. There are plenty of other sources out there including my husbands work and the work of countless others that can verify that the city of Petal is no longer in shambles. The image appear on Google because Google's algorithms think it should. WP has no control over it, though WP is one of the things Google look at. At the bottom right corner of the googlepanel is a link that says "feedback". If you use that, perhaps Google will react at some point.

On providing a new image for use on WP, here is the easy way: Take a new pic with your own camera. That way, you have the copyright of that pic, and WP is very careful about copyright. Then upload it with the process that starts here. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:45, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

There's a good chance that you may be seeing it on a Google Knowledge Panel, in which case you're going to have to send feedback to Google (there should be a Feedback link somewhere on there). Again, there is currently no photo of tornado damage in the Wikipedia article about Petal, Mississippi. However, Google still displays that photo when people search for information about your city because the photo is still on Wikimedia Commons. It will remain there on Commons because it documents an important event in the history of your city. Let me make it clear that Wikipedia has zero influence on what Google displays as an image accompanying a Google search. None at all. What I recommend is that you take photos that show your city in a better light, upload those photos to Wikimedia Commons under a free license, and make an edit request at Talk: Petal, Mississippi to add the best of them to the article. Photos of businrss district, historic buldings and your city hall are the kinds of things that would be helpful. Most likely, Google will then start displaying a more representative photo. @Cayla.campPR: As people keep telling you, it is Google and not Wikipedia which placed the photo on the Google search results page. Many people assume an image at google.com is placed by Wikipedia if it's in a Google box with text from Wikipedia and a link to a Wikipedia article. It's a natural but false assumption. I think Google's box has a misleading design. Data fields below the Wikipedia link are also added by Google and not Wikipedia. The only thing which can be assumed to be from Wikipedia is a text paragraph which ends with a Wikipedia link. See Template:HD/GKG for a stock reply. It's possible some Wikipedia edits can indirectly influence which image Google's software decides to place on a Google page, but we do not design Wikipedia articles based on what Google might do. Wikipedia has a license which allows others to display our content if they follow certain rules. Google is one of many sites doing that. We don't control how they display it. commons:File:January 21, 2017, Petal, Mississippi, tornado damage.jpg is a valid image to store at Commons and one of eight images in commons:Category:Petal, Mississippi. The other seven are not from the tornado. We are not going to delete an image from Commons just because Google decides to display it in a way some people dislike. I understand Google's choice is frustrating to you but if we started to delete content whenever somebody used it in a way disliked by somebody else, then we would lose a lot of valid material. You can use the "Feedback" link at the bottom of the Google box to suggest other photos. The request will be processed by Google. Wikipedia will not see the request or have any control over it. Is Using the User Sandbox for LARP purposes acceptable?

You don't need to read every help page just to make an edit. The great thing about Wikipedia is of course that anyone can edit, and if your edit violates some policy, it can quickly be removed and explained to you why. If it doesn't violate policy, then it won't be removed.

I'm trying to find someone who's edited the page I want to update (Charley Ross) but so far, no luck. If they have edited the page, they might not only be interested in my research (https://charleyross.com) that significantly changes the outcome posted there and corrects history but they might offer to do the edit for me and save me the learning curve. It's that I don't have a reliable source for the DNA analysis and my research report with 65 endnotes of documentation. It can't be used because it's unpublished. David notMD made a much appreciated edit to the Charley Ross page removing the Youtube reference to our DNA evidence. Yet that same Youtube reference has been published for several years without notice. After 12 years of research, I just want to get the truth out there - it corrects history and the declaration of an Arizona jury that Charley Ross was found. He was not. With {{Cite AV media}} I can point out the specific time where it happens, but with {{Cite interview}} I can point out who's the interviewer, and who's the interviewee.

In a lot of situations, which template you use really doesn't matter because the parameters that are being used are probably going to be the same. To answer the question though, I'd probably go with cite av media. In my experience, most citing templates are for published text based material, and cite av media is for anything that isn't text. This can kind of be supported by the fact that cite av media template says it is for "audio and visual works" in general and that only when it's an episode of something or something in a serial format should it not be used. ― Levi_OP^Talk 16:08, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Policy on reproducibility of Wikipedia examples (math, for me)

I am *guessing* that Wikipedia policy on reproducibility in examples that require computation is that if the example is complex enough that it's an issue (more on that in a minute) then the article should be pointing at a primary source which has some sort of commitment to reproducibility. Does that sound right?

When would it be an issue? Old-school style was to omit details that could be reasonably deduced and filled in by a reader "skilled in the art". This is always a judgement call. Different articles may well have different assumptions about the skill level of the reader. I just put a textbook-level example into my draft article on Draft:Quasilinearization which I feel is about right; details are omitted and no code is supplied, but the code took me a few minutes to write and another few to debug, so it doesn't seem necessary to supply it. But I recognize that opinions may differ.

There is a real dilemma, with different forces pulling in different directions.

(1) Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia that can be read by everyone. We should not expect that anyone is skilled in the art. Many of our maths articles suffer from the problem that they are too complicated to be understood by the general reader (who therefore learns nothing), and really only make sense to someone who already understands what the article was trying to say (and therefore also learns nothing from it).

(2) But Wikipedia is also not a text-book, which means that some maths editors will get unhappy about inclusion of explanatory material that looks textbookish. Since textbooks are written to be understood by new students, this practically excludes the writing of maths articles that make sense to anyone to whom the topic is new.

(3) Pointing to primary sources is often unhelpful because they're primary, and because they're often not as clear as later, secondary sources, whose authors have concentrated on making the idea approachable, and who've had time to iron out complexities, and find the best ways to present them. Primary sources are of (valid, encyclopaedic) historical interest rather than of interest-to-understanding.

(4) It's very difficult to point readers to didactic sources by reference or external link, because there is a multitude of text-books out there, with no obvious "right" choice (and different people will have different books available to them), and a bigger multitude of useful YouTube videos and teaching sites by friendly professors. It's hard to put a link in without it being taken out again as an unsuitable external link, or with the argument "why that book, and not this one?". And the few readers who actually understand the article (and are therefore most likely to edit it) have no interest in such links, but are more likely to turn to the article for its historical correctness, and favour the primary source.

I'll be quite honest: I think maths is WP's weakest area by far. It is very difficult to explain maths in an accessible way, and most people who are good at it do it somewhere else, where they have more freedom to do it well. I have no idea what the solution is to this. At the very least, it requires the maths community to realise that no one is reading what they write (or at least no one outside that rather small community). Interesting! And thank you for the reply. I would hope that math articles are written for the people who are ready to hear the answer; I use math Wikipedia a lot, and used it for my students as well. I take the view that it's not that the reader will start from zero, but rather are sophisticated enough to ask the question in the first place. If they are looking for "Quasilinearization" for instance, they probably saw the word in a differential equations textbook so they already probably know what differential equations are. Similarly, people looking up SVD already know what matrices are. Nonetheless I would expect links in those articles to supporting material (differential equations and linear algebra respectively). So this is not an article written for people who already understand the point of the article in question, but "just about". It makes a difference to me, and I have learned a lot from reading Wikipedia math.

Even so, your points resonate with me. Does the approach outlined above turn Wikipedia into a giant hyperlinked math textbook? Mm, what's a textbook, then? Is that what we want?

Well, I for one really value Wikipedia math and I have done for a long time now. It's only recently (since my retirement) when I have started to contribute, though, and I am still just feeling my way, so those different forces you mention are quite important for me. No original research---good idea. Clear didactic presentations? Blurs the line because research into original didactic techniques may well involve Wikipedia vignettes. Why this text and not that one? I have my favourite textbooks, for sure (and some experience in using them), but I am well aware that there are competitors, some better, some worse. I would hope that we can accept textbook references as being sort of equivalent, when they more or less are equivalent.

So, I will continue to use my judgement, and to listen to others' opinions on the subject, such as yours, to try to improve my judgement. Thank you again for your reply. I will try to write as clearly as I can. It's a hard job, as you point out. I'm starting on the "Requested" articles and have done two now; quasilinearization and zero-stability. I expect people to point out any difficulties with those two articles (assuming there is enough interest in the first place) and I will try to improve them. @Rob.Corless: Yes, exactly, you said some important things there: one is the difficulty of a blurred line between original research and using your experience to find didactic ways to present the data. The other was a good choice of example: SVD. This is an excellent example; it is a technique that would be phenomenally useful to many biologists, analytical chemists etc., some of whom are probably already using it without knowing (because of its relevance to principal component analysis, which they're using in software packages), but many of them are rather rusty on what a matrix is. It's quite challenging to explain SVD or PCA to a non-mathematician in terms that make sense to them, without also making a mathematician cringe! When teaching the SVD, I used to rely on Cleve Moler's "eigshow" demo, which gave a kinaesthetic experience of the geometric meaning of the SVD (in two dimensions). Hello. I was wondering how to make a page without using the sandbox. Is making a page something that has limitations for people with certain amounts of edit. You are already eligible to create a page. Anyone can create a page but you need at least 10 edits and 4 days of editing to create it in the Article namespace.

As The Tips says, anybody can write an encyclopaedia article, but people who try to write an encyclopaedia article before they have understood what Wikipedia's requirements are for an encyclopaedia article often have a frustrating and disappointment time. I am emphasising that phrase to try and get the message across that this is a very different endeavour from creating a page on social media or a private website.

Is there a place to add suggestions to Wikipedia? My suggestion is a new protection level called "Protected", it needs 21 days tenure and 100 edits. Hello, I'm new to Wikipedia and would like to publish an article about a small youth politics group in my local area. The problem is that the only sources that I have are from school newspapers (and I am not sure are considered reputable sources of information) which are all physical copies and nothing digital I can link to as my source. Is there any way I can still publish an article like this? Would I have to upload the physical copies too somewhere? For future reference 331dot, school newspapers vary greatly in quality and scope. The student newspaper at my alma mater was essentially a noticeboard for various school-related information ("the fencing club will meet at 10 on Thursday", "don’t forget to renew your student badge before September 20", etc.), with the occasional humorous / polemic opinion pieces from the "editors"; I suppose this is the standard for most student newspaper, and obviously unacceptable for almost any Wikipedia claim. On the other hand, the Mancunion is about as serious as the average local UK newspaper (or at least used to be a decade or so ago). (Here, the OP is apparently able to publish whatever they like, so it is probably not one of the highest-quality newspapers.) Where to get proper reference links/etc.

Hi, my name is Matt Barachko. I'm the lead singer of the band, The UV Sound, and I wanted to try and publish a Wikipedia page so that our Google search results appear more cleanly to users. The only problem is that we have no articles written about us (hopefully we will someday), so I'm trying to figure out ways that I can have more valid sources to use so that my article on our band has a better chance at becoming published. I understand we would probably have to have more publicity first but there usually seems to be walkarounds to these sorts of things. Thank you for any help! Images which include an advertisement for the photographer watermarked on them

This picture has a watermark on it that advertises the photographer and his website. I didn't delete it because it IS a really great picture, but I'm asking if that watermark is an acceptable element when it's on the Venice article. Draft: Decision Education Foundation - Rejected but now ready for re-review?

I have a draft article on the Decision Education Foundation that was rejected. It can be found at: [[4]]

I've added citations from numerous books and also specified where there was a potential conflict since an author of one of the independent studies was also involved with Decision Education Foundation. After removing an irrelevant section and cleaning up duplicate citations, I believe the article should meet Wikipedia standards but don't want to assume anything. Is there any penalty for resubmitting the updated article? Or, if that's the wrong approach, can someone suggest how I should proceed to get it re-reviewed? I believe the foundation meets the notability standards and that there are sufficient well sourced citations to pass.

Tonypray, the main problem you will have in getting your draft accepted as an article will be in finding reliable independent published sources with in-depth discussion of the subject. I see you have cited 18 sources, but the ones I've check either weren't independent of the subject, or lacked discussion of it. Another issue is the section titled "Citations" – it's not clear what it's there for, and I think you should delete it. And the External links is too long – you should keep the link to the subject's own web site and get rid of the others (or cite them as references, if appropriate). Link a draft page to WikiData

Hello! I'm trying to add a wikidata infobox to my draft on Marianne Lederer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Marianne_Lederer). I now the wikidata exist with the number Q15438360 (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15438360#sitelinks-wikipedia), but I cannot seem to insert it. I've read these help pages https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikidata and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_person/Wikidata but I cannot figure out how to do this in the draft. My article was declined because of non-verifiable references, so my question today is when I'm writing about organizations, what references should I be looking for or using. The issue is, notability. Notability is not the same as "important" or "meritorious" or "good". It's a function of media coverage - that is, the extent to which a topic has been noted. You can't show notability for [non-profit X] simply by telling us what [non-profit X] says about itself. Is there any media coverage of the non-profit? If yes, you cite that. How do I add text to the end of (my own) paragraph when replying on a talk page?

Yesterday I changed from Legacy Vector to Vector, though when I checked my prefs just now I see Monobook. Regardless, I can no longer type some characters at the end of a paragraph if I pause in my writing. This only happens if I hit "reply" to a post (which is new to me); if I just hit "edit" as I have been doing for years, WP is perfectly functional.

For example, if I'm typing, then decide to go back and change a word or fix a typo, I can no longer continue with the paragraph. Instead, I need to start a new paragraph, then hit backspace to join them together. Now I can't add anything to that paragraph, either at the end on in the middle.

Sometimes I can't add any letters, but other times it's just certain characters. Parentheses seem to be a particular problem: If I add a parenthesis, WP will insert it at the beginning of the paragraph instead of at the cursor.

I haven't explored further to narrow down what the bug is, but it's been more than once. Is it just me, or is this something in queue to be fixed? — kwami (talk) 21:18, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

How to get a "marked up copy" of an article's references

How can I get a "marked up copy" of an article's references. It would be useful when analysing their value (especially for an AfD) to have a sandbox copy of them, complete with clickable links, etc. and other functions available when viewing the rendered results of the {{reflist}} template. It could act as a valuable scratch pad in grouping them, describing, then deleting them, and invoking them individually when expressing an opinion on them.

I did try searching the Teahouse archives, and I did try copying the entire article into a sandbox, then replacing the template with {{subst:reflist}}. Can't blame me for trying, but that replaces it with the code executed dynamically to produce the result I'm after.

So is there a way to collect, like {{reflist}} does, an ordered list without duplicates of the references in an article, as they would be marked up for rendering in the typical ==References== section? _signed,Willondon (talk) 03:31, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

Pripyat display error

The infobox for the Pripyat article is broken on mobile, appearing as normal text instead of an infobox. It appears fine on PC. On advertisement, the article isn't too bad imo. So focus on getting coverage. What's Mongolia's paper of record? Have they published reported profiles of the company or similar? If so, add those. If there's nothing like that, then this topic isn't ready for a page yet, and

Question about Wikipedia words in Google searches

Hello, I noticed that when I search for a page like Principia College in Google, on the right of the screen part of the first paragraph from Wikipedia will show up on Google search results. If the current first paragraph has been updated, is there a way to reset the cache or something like that, so the current version of the Wikipedia page shows up on Google searches? If you have complaints, take them to Google. Improving a Wikipedia article often (but not always) results in an improvement of the knowledge graph. How to insert straight quotation marks in math formulas?

I'm working on replacing some low-quality images of formulas in applicative universal grammar (example) with wiki markup. However, the MathML renderer doesn't seem to want to straight double quotes. Help:Displaying a formula doesn't say anything about quotation marks. I've tried the following methods, but they all give me a syntax error:

Using two single quotes sort of works, but they appear as closing quotes and makes the output kind of ugly:

Hello, Harlanpjohnson. I may be misunderstanding you, but what I think you are saying is that you want to use Wikipedia to publish an alternative version of a song. If that is indeed what you mean, then I am afraid that Wikipedia may not be used to publish original material, no matter how important or commendable it might be. It was a mistake, but how to fix it?

I was in a hurry to create an English version of a page devoted to the Russian businessman and philanthropist Boris Zimin (this person supported Russian science for years, and now there is a concern in Russian scientific society that he might be sanctioned, which would be terribly unfair! It's just an explanation why I was in a hurry). So I made a wrong decision to create a short page of a single paragraph and then develop it into a normal English page. But I underestimated the speed of Wikipedia: in 15 minutes the page was converted into a draft as relying on a single source (though several sources were already at hand, I did not have time to insert them).

Now, the page is a draft:

It contains now a number of sources both English and Russian, and I am a bit frustrated because the person who converted it into a draft does not answer, and I don't see what's wrong with the page now. User:Mlarisa, User:Melecie - I didn't move it to draft space. I only put a note on it saying that it had been moved from article space to draft space. It was moved from article space to draft space by User:Singularity42. You asked me on my talk page, and I gave the same answer, and Singularity42 answered, saying that it appeared that you had resolved the issue, which was that there was only one source.

I will add that your mistake was one that is sometimes made by editors creating an article in article space, and that is to create part of the article, in article space, and expect to finish it in article space soon. As you can see,

is often quick in dealing with clearly incomplete articles, which may be moved to draft space or tagged for speedy deletion. What I, and some other editors, advise, is not to put a fragment of an article in article space. Put the fragment of the article in user space, such as a sandbox, or in draft space. When it is ready for article space, move it to article space.

You have a track record of creating articles without going through AfC that are then nominated for deletion, also putting an article in mainspace after it was declined at AfC, also creating biography articles of living people without adequate referencing (Tim McGeary), also being warned for removing AfD tags from your articles. If you believe you have refs for Neha Pandey, then I strongly recommend using the AfC process. That way, one reviewer will decide if the draft is worthy, rather than wasting the time of many at AfD. Should I just move this section?

I am writing my MA dissertation about publications by art galleries and similar institutions. I would like to start helping to improve Wikipedia, and thought I would start with the exhibition catalogue page. It doesn't seem to have any references, and in my opinion could do with a bit of a re-write in general.

One problem is that the page covers both exhibition catalogues as would be associated with an art exhibition, and trade fair guides which (apparently? I've never seen it, and there's no citation) can also be called exhibition catalogues.

I wrote a

@Ascendingrisingharmonising I'm not familiar with the subject, but the opening line is – "There are two types of exhibition catalogue (or exhibition catalog): a printed list of exhibits at an art exhibition; and a directory of exhibitors at a trade fair or business-to-business event." Does your research show that there are two types of publications known as exhibition catalogues? If so, then both types should be left in, if you can find good references. If the opening sentence is wrong, then you should correct it, and only leave what is actually known as exhibition catalogues. I would suggest that you first work on finding good references, and give others who may have an interest in the article time to respond to what you wrote on the Talk page. @NSNW, ah, well in that case, I'd say the principle applies that it matters who the source is and what their credentials are, not what platform they're publishing on. So just as YouTube isn't normally reliable but a YouTube video from a YouTube video from The New York Times very much is, so too a Soundcloud audio file can be reliable, but it'd be have to be from a reliable source. Dear All One of the ways I would like to edit and add content to the Wikipedia is y adding good quality images of stamps. Sometimes they add details or a visual reference where no photography is available. they also, are a part of culture and history. Where do you think that this image can be added at the article? I don't see the place to add another image and the article is perfectly edited. Can you point me where I can find the guidelines for adding more images, like stamps? I have a HUGE collection, maybe when we speak about flowers and animals this depictions can be of some value, in any case, they are an art expression, from my point of view.

The copyright rules for stamps vary country-by-country and by age of the stamp. Hence it gets complicated. The index page for all this is on Commons at c:Commons:Stamps. Please make sure, Tmg-pmi that you have read the relevant rules carefully before you upload any images to Commons, or you may be wasting your own time and that of others who have to delete images that don't have the appropriate license. The fact is that creating a new article is much much much more difficult than most people realise, and if people try to create an article as the first thing, or almost the first thing, that they do in editing Wikipedia, they usually have a frustrating time. Your attempt is not bad as regards its formatting, but I'm afraid that you haven't yet understood the requirements of sourcing. My advice would be to leave the draft aside for a few months, while you work on existing articles, and leqarn about sourcing. (The draft may get deleted after six months if you do nothing to it, but you can continue to improve it from time to time as you come to understand what is needed). Promoting all presidents to good article status

I would like to work towards getting all the presidents to at least good article status. I was wondering if someone can evaluate all the presidents articles that are not good or featured articles on what their issues are and figure out which articles will be easy to work on and which articles will need a lot of work before reaching featured article status. I'd recommend you check out the US Presidents Wikiproject, which is intended to organize work on those articles. I'm not sure how active that project is, but it does have some tables to overview the current state of those articles. There are lots of articles about presidents and most of them probably have banners for

WikiProjects on the tops of their user talk pages; so, that might be a good place to start. You’re also probably going to need to be clearer about which type of articles you asking for help on. Are you talking about more general articles about the office of president, or list articles about the president of certain countries? User:Interstellarity - I think you missed the point of the question in giving an American-centric answer in an international Anglophone community. There are approximately 200 countries in the world, and I would guess that more than half of them each have an office of president, where the others either are monarchies or have some alternate governmental system. There have been hundreds, maybe a few thousand, individuals who have served as president of a republic. I disagree with Sdkb. MarchJuly pointed out that there are editors who have already been active on U.S. President articles. The Delisted list (former FA or GA): Jefferson, T Roosevelt, Ford, Bush (senior), Obama, Biden. The failed nomination list: Monroe, JQ Adams, Buren, Trump. Or else first tackle the two never-nominated: Buchanan and Hoover. My own multi-year task has been to raise all vitamin articles to GA. Speaking of FAR - one suggestion of a US President article where there is discussion and a current, detailed review: the current FAR discussion for William Henry Harrison. Edits being deleted

Hello, I was recently editing the most recent episodes of "Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend" and after I completed the edits, all the section for episodes airing in 2022 was deleted and I'm not sure why if I've been editing the episodes for several months and this is the first time this happens. Bascially, the copyright holder of the image needs to do something like this. If they want to do that, then great. If not, there's no way for the license to be uploaded for use on Wikipedia. However, make sure they understand that once they release the work on an acceptable Flickr license and it's uploaded to Commons, they can't really change their mind at a later date. They're not really transfering their copyright ownerships to another person, but rather just releasing their work under a license that makes it much easier for others to use. As long as, the reusers comply with the terms of the license, they can continue to use the file without needing to ask for additional permission as explained here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:54, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
