Hello, I recently tried to edit theory of mind as quite a bit of the information in it regarding "autistic people do not have theory of mind" is out of date is generally agreed to be wrong by modern scientific consensus (similar to how "autism is caused by vaccines" could be cited with out-of-date studies). My edit was reverted as unjustified (that's fair, I should've been more clear) so I tried to edit again this time making it more clear why in the edit description and adding more sources, but it's been removed again and I was asked to justify at the talk page (again, fair - I should have done that initially). I've now explained in the talk page, but I'm now worried about editing it again in case I get in trouble for an edit war but also am feeling a bit stressed because not only is the information out of date, but it's also actively harmful to autistic people. My main advice,

WP:LEAD part of the article. That section is supposed to summarise the more detailed account in the full article and is the part that is most important, since it's what most readers read first before deciding whether to read on. I'm definitely assuming good faith (I love that it is a wiki guideline). Can I ask, for future edits, what counts as "major changes" to an article? WP:DISCUSS with other editors. Many articles I edit have few, or no, other people recently interested in them, as judged their Edit History. So large changes I make probably won't be a problem. However, sometimes it's obvious that lots of people will have the article on their watch pages and the "Page information" link will tell you how many these are (if >30). That's useful in knowing how bold to be. Likewise, the Talk Page of an article can be used to make a judgement: how recently have editors been discussing content? One other tip is to add new content to well-established articles in relatively small increments. Then other editors can revert the bits they don't like while keeping the parts they are happy with, making it easier for you to build up a WP:consensus. Mike Turnbull (talk

Hello!

I don't think I can link our page here since it's in draft status, however, I wanted to see if I could get some assistance with how to get our page approved. It's for our upcoming film 'Nomad' that is not released yet, however, we have noted several on-line sources (not of our own) that talk about the movie production.

The decline notice says, "most of the sources say this movie hasn't released."

Does this mean we cannot get it approved until the film is released?

Wikipedia publishes articles on notable subjects. Your film cannot be notable until it has reports of public reception. Most of the sources you cite aren't about the film. Half of them are about a solar eclipse. Some of them are announcements. And we cannot cite IMDB.

Your draft says the release date is in 2021. That was last year. If the film has been released, aren't there any better sources you can find? It looks like the draft could be completely rewritten post-release.

And to answer your question about approval for unreleased films: generally that won't happen unless there are extraordinary circumstances. Wikipedia absolutely cannot be used as a publicity medium. Some of the references are on-line sources that do talk about an exceptionally rare shot that was captured during the filming. conflict of interest and, to a reasonably good first approximation, you should not be editing the article. Instead, if someone else creates the article, you may suggest changes at its talk page, supported by reliable sources. But be very cautious about touching the article directly. Hello everyone I'm new on Wikipedia, I wanted to ask why all pages related to Republic of Moldova in Russian language are saying we're speaking "Moldavian- a soviet Invention" language, and when I try to modify thesse articles in a day or two they go back unmodified? Moldavian language don't exist and it's disrespectful to us to see Russians dictating here! I was even blocked for 1 day by "Q-bit array- a Russian nazist" for trying to change the mistakes. I'm sorry you are having a frustrating time on the Russian Wikipedia, but they are totally separate projects, and English Wikipedia has no knowledge, influence, or control over Russian Wikipedia. This is the second post I've seen here about such behavior on the Russian wiki. Hi! I was looking for some more information for a company page. I do not want to disrupt or go against any Wikipedia rules/guidelines. My company is looking to create a wikipedia page but I know the rules are super strict on businesses as it cannot be for any promotional use. They were looking to hire a company to help create it but I feel like that is going against Wikipedia rules. I am not sure what the right steps are and how to go about it. My advice is to not force the issue, if the company is truly notable an independent editor will take note of it and choose to write about it. Thank you for coming here and asking, Finance1011. Clearly you understand that Wikipedia may not be used for promotion, but (like many people) I don't think you really understand what that means. Not one of your clients "has a Wikipedia page" because nobody and nothing in the entire universe "has a Wikipedia page". Wikipedia apparently has articles about your clients: the articles do not belong to the clients, are not controlled by the clients, are not for the clients' benefit (except incidentally), they do not necessarily say what the client would like to be said about them. If they are decent articles (we have thousands and thousands of seriously substandard articles that were perpetrated before we became as careful of our standards) they will contain almost nothing that the client says or wants to say, and will be almost entirely based on what people who have no connection with the client have chosen to publish in reliable sources.

Even if all the articles about your clients are excellent (which implies that each of your clients meets Wikipedia's criteria for

notability is not inherited

. If for example you provide a service which independent commentators are not generally interested in writing about, then I'm afraid that you will not meet those criteria, however well-known you might be within the industry.

What I would very very strongly advise you against doing is paying somebody to write an article on you. This can work, but all too often people who try it end up losing out. If the company you hire are honest, they will tell you that they cannot guarantee that an article about you will be accepted, and that if it is accepted, they cannot guarantee that you will be in any way satisfied with the result. (If they do not tell you this, then they are simply lying). They will also conform with Wikipedia's terms of service by declaring their status as

paid editors

.

In the end, I'm afraid that "My company is looking to create a wikipedia page" is precisely what we mean by

promotion. Whether or not Wikipedia ever has an article about your company is not in your gift or control, and will not (from Wikipedia's point of view) ever be for your benefit. ColinFine (talk

Being an employee counts as paid (see

WP:PAID) even if not specifically being paid to create a Wikipedia article. Being paid is allowed as long as that fact is declared on your User page. Creating a new Wikipedia is a hard task. Common advice is to put in months trying to improve existing articles. And as noted, once an article about the company exists, any editor can edit it, as long as facts are verified by references. So, for example Ernest Hemingway has a short list of works, with a link to Ernest Hemingway bibliography. For the two you attempted - Jane and Troian - an editor reverted your attempts as being in their opinion too small to bother. In other articles about academic scientists I have seen a section of selected publications, often limited to 5-10 journal articles. There was also no need to ref so many newspaper articles (NYTimes and WashPost) that mentioned Ebright in passing or had a short quote from him. I deleted 17 refs. At Category:Hardboiled crime novels there's a page listed under "N" for Nobody Move (novel). Clicking on it takes you to the article for the book's author, Den Johnson, not the page for the novel, because that page doesn't exit. I do note however the redirect page has no history of being anything other than a redirect, so is the category useful or simply confounding (considering principle of least confoundment) for those trying to locate articles on 'hardboiled crime novels'? I notice that four of Den Johnson's novels and two of his short-story collections already have articles of their own, so it's plausible that Nobody Move could also merit one. I was busy, but just got around to removing Category:Hardboiled crime novels from the Nobody Moves (novel) redirect page, my original problem, but there are still 9 more categories there. How can a novel have categories when it doesn't have a real article? You can't assign categories if you don't know anything about the novel, and I thought you could only base that on what's verifiable (from an article). One of these new GTF is the Mentorship program, where new users are assigned an experienced editor; the new users can ask this mentor questions at any time if they feel stuck about something. Currently, 10% of new users are given this feature, and you have fallen in this percentage.

@DMBanks1 Welcome to the Teahouse. My approach was to take the documents title and Google it. That gives you a single search result which you can click to download the document. Just copy the link at the search result point, then use that as the url when you add a citation with the editing tool "Cite" button. It will automatically detect it as a pdf. I pass no judgement on the source website or the legitimacy of the source. It looks OK, but it's hard to tell at a quick read through. Is there likely to be anything contentious about it? Morita Akio, I've never moved a file to Commons, because I've never wanted to. But a quick look at commons:Commons:Moving files to Commons doesn't suggest that there's anything about the process that varies according to which Wikipedia you're moving from. Hello, Weavingowl, and welcome to the Teahouse. Your use of the phrase "business page" suggests to me that, like many people, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of Wikipedia. What Wikipedia consists of is not "business pages", but encyclopaedia articles about notable subjects, including businesses. A Wikipedia article about Riveter will not belong to Riveter, will not be controlled by Riveter, will not be for the benefit of Riveter (except incidentally) and may end up containing material that Riveter does not want there. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.

Also, I must ask: do you have a connection with the business? If so, you need to read about editing with a

So, your question: Wikipedia articles must be based on what is written in reliable, disinterested, published sources. Unpublished discussions aren't usable. I translated one of my articles from the german wikipedia where I am using a block quote as a means of design/organization of the article as it matches the two galleries so nicely. Now I'm not sure wether I should translate it or not. Quote in the original language, which is german? It would be good to have an english translation of it as well. But there's no parameter for the translation in the template. Just write it in brackets? Here's the wikitext:

@Grizma, many parts of Wikikpedia do use block quotes with {{blockquote}}. See Template:Blockquote/doc#Examples where the multiline parameter is used to provide a quote with both the original and the translation. The example gives

@Th78blue, the purpose of talk pages is to facilitate communication with others, so it might be frowned upon by any talk page watchers to use it as a test space instead. There's no ironclad rule against it I'm aware of, but why do you want so much to use it for a different than it was intended for? I've made divided columns plenty of times with whatever "skin" I am using though with no issues until now. Here is an example that is working just fine for me: Example with Div Col working. The other one just wasn't visually rendering for me correctly and I wasn't quite sure why. Hello Th78blue! I believe this is down to browser window size, two columns only display if you have a wide enough window. For example both columns you mentioned (here & here) show as single columns for me unless I maximize my browser, at which point they reshuffle to display as two columns. Screen resolution used will also have an affect, wider resolutions will allow more screen acreage to display columns. Text size in browser will also cause variation on people's display devices, I use a fairly large size font so get less room. Added to this both examples have either an infobox or gallery images alongside them taking up some of the window further reducing the area they can spread. Hope this is of some use! Another issue is that the images in the article will be deleted unless you fix the licenses. You claimed that File:Nourhane Blue paint.jpg was your own work when you uploaded it; unless you personally took it, that's false. I think that there should be a separate Poliespo article. It has a lot of information of it out there, but is still lumped in with the Billy Ray Waldon article. Another way that Wikipedia could add more information about Poliespo is by expanding the already existing Poliespo section. I noticed that in the Ukrainian version of pages, the Wikipedia logo has the colors of the Ukrainian flag. I think that is a great idea. Would it be possible to extend that idea to the pages in all the other languages? I realize that there is a potential issue with the fact that some languages are spoken in many countries while others are spoken mostly in a region or province of a country. The reason given is that the article does not cite sufficient reliable sources and seem to be promotional. The sources cited are published articles in reputable magazines, recognized Halls of Fame, etc. Please tell me what is wanted that can make the article acceptable. It would be helpful to me to know what is lacking in citing, for example, the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, the California Western Swing Society Hall of Fame, the California Country Music Association, the Arhoolie Foundation, the Grand Ole Opry, etc. I might add that Wikipedia cites the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, for example, in articles about other steel guitar players, and there are Wikipedia articles on virtually every one of the entities listed. I think I see. If I understand matters, what's wanted is some number of published mentions of the subject, Bobby Black, in news and trade publications. At least 3 of the sources have zero mention of the subject, 2 are forum posts and several others are blog postings, list of award recipients. That article showed that George Frayne had a music career, but it didn't prove anything about the Bobby Black paragraph you wrote. You need to find articles about Bobby Black. Not ones about people he may have worked with, but about Bobby Black. I didn't look at the other references, but I was disappointed in the one I skimmed through. EVRRVE., I find to my surprise that uniforms are programmable; I mean, they can be (and usually/always are) specified in text (using for example colors that themselves are specified in hexadecimal values of red, green, blue) as values for a number of attributes within Template:Infobox football club, which explains what to do. I notice that you're a newish editor; if you're in an ambitious mood, then you're welcome to try all this, but I can't really recommend it: it's probably better for you to start with more humdrum uses of templates and infoboxes; and when you're used to these (which shouldn't take you long), then tackle the specification of club uniforms. -- Hoary (talk) 09:21, 16 April 2022 (UTC)

As a fourth year medical student I find a troubling discrepancy of quality between Wikipedia articles of Western and non-Western medical professionals. Is there any ongoing collective initiative to address this issue? Every second or third article about non-Western subjects seem to be a complete mess, significantly smaller content-wise and slapped with years long unresolved tags while their Western counterparts are maintained in proper order. @Toxitrophic See WP:Systemic bias the English Wikipedia is mostly edited by westerners, specifically Americans, British, Australians, Canadians and other Europeans. There are a significant number of South Asian contributors, but nowhere near enough to balance the overwelming reliance on Western English language sources. A bit ago I asked here about uploading a copyrighted image for an article of a videogame, and was told it's allowed as long as the article is in the mainspace (ie, not draft). @Pizzaplayer219: As far as I know, you can't use Vector on mobile. However, if you go to Settings,you can adjust the font size, as well as turn on "Advanced Mode" which you may or may not want. London has had literally thousands of edits since the last failed attempt at raising it to FA, so worth a consideration. I suggest you look at Talk Archives 4 and 5 to see comments made when it was being raised to Good Article and last considered for Featured Article. I looked at articles about major cities around the world. None currently FA!! Several are GA. Many are B. There is a pattern of city articles being nominated for GA or FA and failing more than once, or even being listed and then delisted. Most are varying degrees of locked, but even with restrictions, there is such a high frequency of edits that can cumulatively cause the articles to degrade in quality, hence delistings. Hello TeddyBearRocker123! Were you definitely signed in when you were trying to make the minor edit? Because you cannot tag an edit as minor if you are not signed in, probably intended to cut down fly by night vandals trying to sneak an edit in under the minor flag. But be aware that "minor" here has a special meaning. It means something that cannot possibly in any way be construed to be controversial, something that even the most extreme of editors would see as obviously sensible (for example the correction of an obvious typo). It doesn't just mean "small". I made that mistake several times when I first started editing, and still feel guilty! If in doubt, don't declare the edit to be minor. What makes a piece of Media notable enough to put in an "In other media" section

I added Ari Folman's film the Congress which references the book The Age of Spiritual Machines to the "In other media" page of the latter. I cited the film's script which mentions the book by name. It was removed because apparently only a secondary source means something is notable enough to add it to the "In other media section." I have seen countless articles where the "In other media" or "In popular culture" section cites only primary sources. I tried to save my first ever edit, but it doesn't appear on the article page

So, I visited the article's edit page once more to key in my edit again, left the "minor edit" checkbox unchecked again, and provided the same brief summary before I clicked on "publish changes."

Hello 109.64.3.242! When an article is an orphan (click that hyperlink for a more detailed guide) it means there are no links connecting to it from other pages. For instance if it were an actor's page, you'd expect a link to it from at least one of the films/TV shows they had been in. These links leading to an article help to make it more findable. You can check to see what pages link to an article by clicking the "What links here" on the left of their page. The note at the top of that page stating it is an orphan would actually remain regardless of whether the problem it mentions is fixed or not as they are manually removed by editing the article & deleting the Orphan template at the top in {{}}. Hello all. I made an edit to an article that contains a list (added a book title, author name, and brief description):

I notice that when I hover over the default hyperlinks, the identity of another more famous person with the same name appears in a small preview box. The same goes for the cover of the novel. I searched, but the author does not have a WP article associated with his name. I considered uploading the book's cover, but I don't own the copyright. What he has said, done, created, or published are almost irrelevant unless they have been written about by people wholly unconnected with him in reliable sources. Furthermore, whether he wants there to be an article, and what he wants such an article to contain or not to contain, are totally irrelevant. Please start by reading about

Hello, Navyvet1963. Did you allow your nephew to log in under your account? If so, you made a major error because accounts are for one person only, cannot be shared, and each account holder is responsible to use secure passwords. I have been married for over 40 years and my wife knows my passwords to many websites. But she has no idea of my Wikipedia password. As for the notion of a "search history", that does not exist on Wikipedia although it may exist on your browser. Wikipedia keeps track of every edit that an account makes. Account passwords aren't supposed to be shared among different people and it's the responsibility of the user who creates the account to make sure that doesn't happen. There's really no way to delete an account's contributions history since such a record is required for Wikipedia's licensing purposes; so, unfortunately the best that you can do is to do your uptmost to make sure that your nephew doesn't gain access to your account again. The only edit you've made so far with this "Navyvet1963" account has been your post here at the Teahouse; so, I guess this account would be considered "clean" so to speak. Assuming it was another Wikipedia account that your nephew accessed, you may have no choice other than to abandon that account and either stick with this one or create another account to use for your Wikipedia editing. The account your nephew was using (if that's what happened) could most likely be locked by an adminsitrator so that nobody can use it. You could then add a link to your old account to the user page of your new account so that other can see the edits you made with the abandoned account. I think what Navyvet1963 may be referring to are the items that appear in the dropdown when one clicks in the Wikipedia search box. These are stored in your browser, so deleting your cookies should get rid of them. (You will then need to log in again.) Question on article talk page redirect

I just completed expanding the article The Young Pioneers (miniseries), and then went to what I assumed was the article's Talk page, to upgrade the article from Stub to Start. After completing the upgrade I noticed I was actually at Talk:The Young Pioneers, and that there was a notice of a Redirect from Talk:The Young Pioneers (miniseries). I find that quite awkward, as it's difficult to get from that redirected Talk page back to the article I'd just worked on. Am I allowed to try and figure how to remove that redirect, or should I first ask on the Talk page if anyone objects to me removing it? There is Young Pioneers (novel), Young Pioneers (film), and Young Pioneers' Christmas, and they all seem to have their own Talk pages, so I have no idea what the redirect is all about. Hi Karenthewriter! In general, non-controversial modification of redirects (maintenance, retargeting to section, etc) is perfectly fine and you can go ahead and remove the redirect. Moving the content of my user/sandbox into a draft

Hello everybody,

I have been editing on articles for a while and last year I started a new article in my sandbox User:Yeti-Hunter/sandbox. Basically it´s a stub about an offshore supply ship which is actually to be converted to the new oceanographic research vessel of the Schmidt Ocean Institute. So far I am done and ready to move it. But I am struggeling with the Move of the content to a draft page because the name convention for ships requestes that the name is in italics like R/V Falkor (too) and worse the name of the converted vessel contains two characters ( ) which might cause even more trouble to me. So, my question is now. Should I fill in the Displaytitle-template with the name of the vessel {{DISPLAYTITLE:xyz}} aka the MagicWord, and add this template in the very first line above the infobox inside my sandbox content? Or should it be placed when I create a draftpage. I already tried something like this but I got a error message because the real vessel name does not fit to the naming convention for article names. Requesting an Admin to intervene in a talk page discussion

Dear Teahouse,

There have been many issues regarding possible stonewalling on a living person's WP article Talk Page. Please check that on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Patrisse_Cullors, two editors who frequently edit articles together, as can be confirmed by reviewing their Talk Pages, have refused any addition to the primary, protected article over recent allegations of nonprofit funds misuse by Mrs. Cullors. The issue here is not the use of non-RS, like Fox News or Daily Mail, but after several acknowledged RS surfaced in the past few days, such as The Independent, NY Mag, Jezebel, Snopes, and others, these two editors still refuse by claiming that this same RS previously did not consider Mrs. Cullors culpable. They further try to deflect any addition by claiming only the nonprofit Mrs. Cullors led should bear any additions these RS might bring since, in their own words, "this is a smear campaign."

We require a neutral Admin, not related to this article, that will look at this situation. I believe this is a clear case of

WP:TAGTEAM

. Please help us with the following steps to take.

Hello, IP editor. I am an administrator so I took a look and what I see is a content dispute, and administrators do not adjudicate content disputes. It is obvious that this particular dispute relates to the critically important policy Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons which says Biographies of living persons ("BLPs") must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid: it is not Wikipedia's job to be sensationalist, or to be the primary vehicle for the spread of titillating claims about people's lives; the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment and also A living person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until convicted by a court of law. Accusations, investigations and arrests do not amount to a conviction. For individuals who are not public figures; that is, individuals not covered by Public figures, editors must seriously consider not including material—in any article—that suggests the person has committed, or is accused of having committed, a crime, unless a conviction has been secured. If different judicial proceedings result in seemingly contradictory outcomes that do not overrule each other include sufficient explanatory information. In this case, there are allegations of of inappropriate real estate purchases. Without expressing any opinion about the best way to describe this issue, or whether to mention it at all, I will say that perhaps two separate real estate transactions are at issue, and that one was made by an organization and the other by the individual in question, possibly using her own funds. The policy issue is that, unless misconduct has been proven by a court of law, there is a very high threshold to even mentioning such allegations. Any mention of this matter must accurately and neutrally summarize what high quality reliable sources say about the dispute. Coverage from unreliable sources should not influence the content discussions in any way, shape or form. Images

I've noticed that for many articles about people, there aren't any images of them in the infobox. Images of those people, however, are publicly available when you go to Google Images. Why is this? It's pretty hard. OTOH, Wikipedia editors (aside from the spammers and other paid hacks) are volunteers, and their/our time and effort are limited. They may have missed something that you could find, if you looked. I was working on translating an article which lacked some information that I added into the draft. However, it is still being rejected on the basis that the subject is not notable. The original article exists in two other languages, and my sources are almost identical to (albeit more numerous than) the sources that exist in the French article. What am I doing wrong? Hello, Ifra, and welcome to the Teahouse. Wikipedia is not much intyerested in what somebody has done, published, written, said, produced except where other people have written about it. You need to remove all (or nearly all) the sources which derive from Sikora, and instead find sources where people unconnected with him have chosen to write about him: some reviews reviews will work (but they need to have been published by a

significant coverage of Sikora. If you cannot find at least three sources that meet all of these criteria, then it is likely that Sikora does not currently meet Wikipedia's criteria for notabililty, and no article about him is po0ssible. ColinFine (talk

Updating a business page information - Current content is over 4 years out of date

Hi, I need some assistance getting a business page updated. I do have a conflict of interest which I have stated, being an employee of the business. I had been speaking to someone and provided all relevant information. The current content is 4+ years out of date, and almost non of the information is accurate. @JimRobertseConsult: you're asking too much, in too general terms, and the sources you're providing aren't great. What you need to do is state exactly what text you want to change. Say explicitly which text you want to remove, and which text you want to add, and where. If you have a lot of changes, do them in small chunks in case whoever looks at the request finds they agree with one bit and not another. Editors here are unlikely to want to put a lot of effort into this, so you should aim to meet them half-way by actually writing the text yourself. But keep your changes neutral and factual; no one is going to accept anything they perceive as advertising copy.

Every change must be supported by a reference. Throw away everything published by the company itself. None of that will be acceptable. Similarly, do not use any websites and publications from the NHS. Since the NHS is your customer, it is not a reliable, independent source. What you really need are write-ups by independent journalists in newspapers, preferably national newspapers. One good write-up in the Guardian, for example, is a lot more useful than a whole set of local newspaper articles of the sort used to pad out some columns between the adverts. Detailed studies published by academic groups can sometimes be useful, but run the risk of being primary rather than secondary; if they're reports commissioned by health bodies considering using the company, or assessing the effects of using the product after its introduction, they will probably not be seen as independent secondary sources. In general, as a very rough rule of thumb, if you can only find the thing as a pdf on some organisation's website, it's probably problematic. If you don't have independent, national coverage, then it is likely that the subject isn't yet sufficiently notable for Wikipedia. This is no shame: there are plenty of good businesses that aren't notable.

The bottom line is that nothing is going to go in that article unless there is good secondary evidence backing it up. On the other hand, if there is information in the article that is incorrect and is either unsupported by any source, or is supported by a source that is likely to be out of date, it can be dealt-with. Unsupported information can be removed (just say, explicitly, what you want removing). Information that is supported by an out-of-date source can be reworded to make it clear it reflects the situation at a point in the past, not necessarily the current situation.

The main reply is to be patient: Wikipedia is a volunteer project, and editors work on what they choose to work on. It looks to me as if your request is around the middle of the 145 open requests in terms of age; but that list is a list, not a queue, and they do not necessarily get addressed in order. What I will say is that the edits you have requested look to me like a lot of work for an editor to pick up and consider carefully. Yes. As a rule, logins are valid across the whole of the Wikimedia projects - Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, etc in any language, and also WikiData and Wikimedia Commons. Some language Wikipedias send a welcome message to you the first time you visit them while logged in, which can be disconcerting, because you may not even realise that you've visited them. Producer Page Improvements

Hi,

I work for a company named Kyoto Music and have been trying to draft a page for one of our artists. Our submission was declined recently because our references "do not show significant coverage of the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources". However, comparing our article with other articles for music producers on Wikipedia I do not really see how it doesn't qualify. This is my first time editing on Wikipedia and I'm just a little confused. Let’s assume that is taken care of. As you have been told, to show the subject is "notable" (in the Wikipedia-jargon meaning of the term), you need sources satisfying a set of three criteria: (1) in-depth coverage, (2) independent, (3) reliable. See also

, and (2) if so please give the links to those so we can fix or delete them.

The first reference of Draft:Paul Frazer is this piece, which is basically an interview. Interviews usually fail the "independent" test, since their content is what the subject of the interview want to say, not critical commentary. On the other hand, a source like this is more useful. However, it seems to be about a Black Futures album rather than Paul Frazer - if all other usable sources are like this, it would probably be better to create an article about Black Futures / Never Not Nothing rather than the individual band member.

Just to be clear, when it comes to sourcing, a lack of quality cannot be trumped by quantity. We usually require at least three good sources (depending on who you ask, two really good ones can be enough or three is a minimum number, but that is usually academic). That is why, if you want a thorough review of your sources, the usual advice is to provide your

three best ones

- this way a reviewer does not have to look through dozens of texts.

All the above refers to concerns of notability. If the subject is indeed notable, then you can write an article. To do that, you can use other sources that fail criteria (1) and sometimes (2) to cite specific facts in the article. Hello, KyotoChloe. I suspect that the biggest difficulty you are having is that you are under the misapprehension that drafting "a page for one of our artists" is something that is appropriate in Wikipedia. It is not. At best, you can draft "an encyclopaedia article about one of our artists". It will not belong to them or to you, it will not be under your control, it might end up containing material that you or they do not want there. Above all, it should be based almost entirely on what people who have no connection with you or the artist have chosen to publish about the artist, not on what you or they or your associates say or want to say. As an editor with a conflict of interest, your task is even harder than the already difficult task of creating an acceptable article, because you are likely to find it difficult to write neutrally about your artist.

One more point: you mention that there are articles on other producers which do not seem to be held to the high standards which you are being confronted with. Unfortunately, that is likely to be true: we have thousands and thousands of seriously substandard articles which would not be accepted today. Ideally somebody would go through those improving them, or nominating them for deletion if they can't be made acceptable. But for some reason few of our thousands of volunteer editors seem to want to spend time on that task. Please see

I have a question about referencing

@Lilkeegy: Are you trying to link directly to a site? Usually that is OK. But if you are trying to link through a redirection service, that may be blacklisted. If the link is a very long one, that starts with, for instance, "https://www.google..." and contains lots of ampersand characters, that is an example of a redirection service. @Lilkeegy:If you're trying to source India Population data, just use official government website. (example link for 2011). The various (commercial) aggregator sites where blacklisted since at least February 2020 due to spamming (and, being controlled by private individuals they're probably less reliable than the government website)

FYI @Jéské Couriano In most cases when a user complains about blocked link additions, the spamblacklist log shows the exact link that was blocked. @Ficaia, it's actually a collection of stuff from several sources, much of which I presume is generally reliable, see for example Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_279#Encyclopedia.com. On the Encyclopedia.com page you should be able to see what the actual source is. When you make your cite, you can link Encyclopedia.com, but try to get the other info correct per the actual source. My edits to the Mark Crispin Miller page were undone because they were said to not be 'constructive'? Says who? And why? All I did was remove the word 'disgraced' from a description of Andy Wakefield. Alone 333336 I looked at the filmography of Girija Lokesh, one of the actors in Circle Inspector, and many of the Kannada-language film articles had content similar to your draft. This does not necessarily mean yours should be accepted as is. One of the more complete movie articles is Nanjundi Kalyana. It has a Plot, Production and Reception section, and for the cast list, gives the names of the characters they played in the movie. Hello, IP user, and welcome from me too. In addition to what 331dot says, there's also the issue of whether an image with suitable copyright status is available. We have many articles about people which lack images not because we don't want them to have pictures, but because nobody has found an image which is licensed in such a way that it can be freely reused (which is a core policy of Wikipedia). A wrong image is a different matter, certainly, but it might be that the best we can do is to remove the wrong image. If this is a person you know, or that you have access to, and you can take a picture of them yourself, you will be able to license it appropriately youself. If you saw the wrong photo on the right-hand side of a Google search results page, in the "knowledge panel", that is almost certainly a problem on Google, not Wikipedia. Check the image on the actual Wikipedia article, if the image is correct, it's a Google problem that we can do nothing to fix. COI Edit request

Hi, I have been asked to update the page for the company I work for, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Face. I am completely new to editing Wikipedia (usually only responsible for updating content on the company's own site), so did not realise I wouldn't be able to make these changes myself due to a conflict of interest - until I published them, and they were promptly undone. Several other WP users reached out to me to explain the issues, and following their advice I have changed my username as appropriate and disclosed my affiliation with the company on my user page.

I am now looking at requesting the changes via the relevant Talk page, but was wondering if there is any way that I can submit the code that I had rewritten too, as I feel this would save a lot of time/repetition of work. I had made changes to several areas of the page; some simple text changes, others adding or removing citations and ensuring that all citations had been formatted in the same way. I believe the main issue was the promotional/branded tone of the rewritten introduction, so I have re-re-written that to be more objective (largely inline with what is already there). The other changes are factual (changes to leadership and ownership, number of stores etc).

Why can't a user delete their own subpages?

Hello! I've recently had the motivation to get more into wikipedia, and just moved my first article to the article space,

I decided to do a bit of spring cleaning in my user space, but noticed I can't delete my own subpages. Accorting to the subpage page, a user must tag {{qd|U1}} at the top of a page, and wait for an admin (or bot?) to delete.

@Douginamug I suspect there are a few reasons. One is that I don't think you could give people the ability to delete pages without giving them the ability to undelete pages. User subpages often get deleted because they are inappropriate for Wikipedia (attack pages, copyright infringement, promotional pages), and you wouldn't want users to have the ability to undelete these pages without oversight. The other issue, I suspect, is that it would give people the ability to delete the history of their talk page. User talk pages are supposed to remain as permanent records of discussions and warnings, so it's important to restrict that ability to admins. Guettarda (talk) 15:30, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Look further at your example by Prettejohn: she uses the name "Bervic" in her discussion, not Balvay. We cannot check the usage in Rombout's book, but the author notes that the individual is called Bervic, which is why Wikipedia should do so as well.

When I look through Google Books, under "Bervic," there are many examples, few of them even mentioning "Balvay"; under "Balvay" in this resource, however, there are NONE (!), no example referring to this individual on this first 2 pages. It looks like you have improved the sourcing, and from what it looks like, should be in better shape now. You might want to go through and see where you can trim or rewrite with a general reader of a bio in mind, and not as a bulletin of accomplishments disproportionate to the size of the article. For example, the "Selected fellowships, grants, and awards" section could be excluded or shrunk. A general reader probably doesn't need that whole list. But that's just my two cents. Krutarth, no, you're wrong. Normally, if you photograph a 2D image, whoever holds the copyright to that image also holds the copyright of derivative works. The simplest way to search for a phrase on Wikipedia (if that was what you're asking) is to enclose it in quotation marks like "my article" & use the Search box at the top right of Wikipedia. The quotation marks will instruct the search to find those words together rather than individual words in the phrase. A more sophisticated method would be to use Advanced Search, where you can specify more precisely what you are seeking. Find that by left licking the magnifying glass on the standard search box at the top of the page then clicking "Advanced Search" to see the available refinements. Hope this is of help! Trying to figure out a new open-source mapping approach

Hi editors and fellow Wiki people,

I've been working on maps of battles of the French Revolution previously such as in Battle of Fleurus (1794), and I've previously relied on an OSM no-labels version found here: https://mc.bbbike.org/mc/

However, this has since gone down and is no longer available, and I'm trying to find other sources of OSM maps with no labels that I could use to base my map annotations and labels on, but I'm hampered by the fact that I'm really not very sure about the licencing situations for alternatives, or about how OSM maps and tiles and layers work at all.

I have started looking at alternatives (so far I've seen Mapbox, Maputnik, and Stamen Maps) and some of them seem like they might be applicable--but before I begin experimenting, I'm wondering if anyone already knows if these are suitable licence-wise for Wikipedia? Or if someone already knows another source of no-label OSM? It's a bit specific a question, I would really appreciate if anyone has any input or suggestions they can share. The Village Pump scares the bejesus out of me. I should point out that I have zero coding or technical knowledge whatsoever, and the BBBike link I previously used, I depended on because it didn't need any of that--I just needed to screengrab the map base after I'd positioned the view where I wanted it, and crop, then photoshop. To clarify further, what I'm really asking isn't whether there's a way I can code another map, but rather, if I find another "Google Maps"-lookalike based on OSM I can simply screengrab, like Stamen Maps, can I just grab it, annotate it, and attribute it the way I did with the maps in Battle of Fleurus ("Own work based on OSM page blah blah" which I was taught how to attribute by another Wiki editor)? I have found the Visual Editor surprisingly usable, and certainly so when compared to WYSIWYG editors I have had to deal with on other platforms. That said, I still find myself gravitating toward source editing, and I suspect many beginner editors would be more open to it if they were made aware of syntax highlighting. Hi, wiki markup can still be used to do things that the visual editor currently cannot. For example, in the Template namespace, the <noinclude>, <includeonly>, and <onlyinclude> tags regulate what appears when the template is called. Visualeditor currently cannot be used on the Template namespace.

Athaenara, Billie J previously brought this subject to the Teahouse and had a discussion with Nick in which Nick said they would review the draft of this article and help change inline external sources to cited references. Nick was not acting in an admin position but as a fellow editor that has a common interest with Billie J. I believe this technical assistance along with the fact Nick is an admin is what led Billie J, a new editor, to believe that Nick is their admin advisor. They also, erroneously, believe that an admin can pre-verify relevance of an article. Relevance is not a pre-qualifier for notability and that's why I cautioned this editor to read policy before going back to article creation. But as it was supposed to be a draft in the first place I believe the article should be undeleted and moved to Billie J's userspace for them to remove the copyrighted material and give them the opportunity to resubmit the draft for acceptance once any puffery is removed. BlueNoise, if you're a beginner, I advise you not to attempt to counter vandalism. A moderate understanding of Wikipedia's relevant policies and guidelines is necessary for that, and beginners don't have it. Fixing typos is a good start, then making judicious additions and other improvements (referenced, of course); and when you're confident of your abilities there -- meaning that you've done a lot without being reverted (other than perhaps by a few dubious editors) -- you're welcome to counter vandalism. -- Hoary (talk) 05:05, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

In general, I don't think that inexperienced editors should attempt to police Wikipedia, unless perhaps the policing consists of reporting infractions to the relevant page, so that other editors can look into it and, if appropriate, take action. I often see edits described as vandalism when they aren't vandalism (however deleterious they may be). More grotesque is the huffy "correction" of spellings from conventionally British to conventionally American or vice versa, the earlier version (which more often than not is the appropriate one according to WP guidelines) being described as having a grammar mistake. -- Hoary (talk) 13:05, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Something that anyone can do, and which is potentially super-useful, is check up on those changes where someone modifies a date-of-birth or some teeny detail like this. There are vandals out there who make that sort of change because it's unlikely to trigger CyberBot, and it's hard to detect, and there are misguided people who do it because they think they know the real date, but they've made a mistake. The only real way to correct this stuff is to chase a source and check what the date really is. There is the lazy option of simply reverting the change as "unexplained" or "unsourced", but of course an IP editor might be quite knowledgeable and totally correct. We can't trust them blindly, but we can treat their edit as a warning sign that the date is dubious and requires checking. This is very low-key, invisible counter-vandalism work, but it's a lot more valuable than the slashing cutlass-drawn, leaping-through-windows-to-arrest-the-criminal swashbuckling end of anti-vandalism because it requires a human detective. IPs can be dynamic or static, so it's not a certainty that the vandals will even be reading the warnings, much less heeding them, but if nothing else it serves as a marker for other editors who may subsequently encounter vandalism from these addresses and/or monitoring activities from a given IP range. --Finngall ^talk 16:36, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Caveat, I do not know correct policy and may be wrong about this. If you're using the term "Vandal" correctly, for things that are obviously intended to mess up Wikipedia, I tend not to bother with the warnings because (1) they probably aren't listening, and might not even notice; (2) it will probably only encourage them; (3) warnings-as-a-prelude-to-blocking aren't needed because if they keep doing it, the best option is to ask for page protection, and in any case, the IP will only get blocked for a bit because IPs tend to change; (4) if they're on an IP range rather than a simple IP, they won't see your message because in half a minute they'll be on a different bit of the range. And life is too short to bother. If, however, it's someone who's "vandalising" in the sense of trying to do something useful but making a complete mess of it because they're misguided, or don't know what they're doing technically, I will try to communicate. In this situation, I used the edit summary, the article talk-page and the IP's talk page according to which I think is most likely to get through, but it's an up-hill struggle. You are correct - I would always advise people to apply warnings to vandals, whether they are accounts or IPs, in all but the most egregious of circumstances (i.e. if you're reporting them directly to AIV). Elemimile is correct that much of the time the don't read them, but at least they have been given due notice, and the warnings are informative for other patrollers. Okay, I stand corrected on that one! I still recommend using meaningful edit-summaries though, and I'd really recommend being a bit gentle about it, because if the IP address is shared, or if it's dynamically reallocated by the ISP to some other person, the warning will hit some random innocent person who didn't commit the original vandalism. I'll typically add a templated warning but one that allows for me to add optional wording. I can usually soften the blow of being slapped with "disruptive", "unconstructive" or "vandalism" with a few short and simple words. I do that whether I think it may be deliberate or not. A large percentage of vandals are probably children or youths that really don't understand how disruptive their editing can be or maybe they don't think about the consequences. By warning them with stern yet personable messages I feel, if they look at the warnings, they may gain understanding that will potentially pull them in to become better editors rather than push them away. Oh yeah, for sure - only revert without a meaningful edit summary for obvious vandalism. If someone's removing sourced content, you just have to type 'rv unexplained removal'; if they're adding unsourced crap, it's 'rv unsourced'; if they've just typed some random characters, 'rv apparent test edit' is your friend, etc. You can give IPs templated warnings for stuff like that, but if you get the sense that they're actually trying to be helpful and just don't know what they're doing, it's much better to give them some personal advice about how to do it properly. How can I copy text with references (citations) from my sandbox to an article?

I have drafted a short section in my sandbox intending to add this new material to an existing article. I used the sandbox to hone what I want to write and make sure that I have all of the citations correct, rather than trying to do a direct edit to the article. Now I want to copy this section into an existing article. But it does not carry my citations with the text. Is there a way to do this? Brucet8585 I am guessing that you are trying to cut/paste from what you see in your sandbox. What you need to do is open the Sandbox content using Edit. proper setting of access-date when archive-url is added

Suppose a citation has an "url" that has become dead, you add an "archive-url" parameter and presumably check that it contains the content to support the claim, then should "access-date" be left alone or should it be updated to reflect the current date? @Asilvering I would point out that the access date is not something that's specific to Wikipedia, it's specified in the various citation styles, essentially stating when the web content was accessed. My personal rationale is that in light of the ephemeral nature of the web, it's the author's assertion as to the fact that the content was available on a specified date, and a more recent date is inherently preferable (e.g. better to claim that the content was available last week rather than that it was available 10 years ago). Photo copyrights

I added a photo to a page I have edited (William G. Johnsson). It was rejected for lack of copyright authorization. The person who "took" the photo is willing for me to use it. Will an email from that person to me suffice (with a copy of the photo, a statement of owning the photo/having "taken" the photo, and an indication of permission for me to use it on a specified Wikipedia page)? If not, what can I do?

Billie J Jackson Articles about academics often have a section titled selected publications, which may contain 5-10 examples of their books and more important journal articles, but that information counts as nothing for establishing notability. Essential to have as references what people have published about him. Your second example is to a journal article authored by other people, and not the complete format for journal articles. Uploading Images
