Welcome to the American music WikiProject on the English Wikipedia! We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to music of the United States.

Goals

  • Standardize coverage of American music, songs and musicians.
  • Improve lower-quality articles to
    Featured
    status.
  • Maintain and further improve articles already of high-quality.

Scope

  • This purpose of this project is to standardize the coverage of American music, songs and musicians within Wikipedia. This includes deciding how pages should be formatted, which pages should and should not be created, designing templates, etc. This project is not yet completely defined, so feel free to make suggestions on the talk page.

Guidelines

  • All articles related to American music should follow the notability guideline for music. See
    WP:Music
  • Capitalization should follow the rules of the English Wikipedia, NOT the rules by academic sources. See
    WP:CAPITALIZATION

The following are acceptable charts and may be used in articles:

  • Billboard charts - for albums, sales, singles and certifications only
  • RIAA
    - for certifications only

*These sites do not archive the charts. You must manually archive the charts in order to source them. A website like WebCite is acceptable.

I. Use references. This is an encyclopedia, so remember to include a ==References== section listing websites, newspapers, articles, books and other sources you used to write the article. New articles and statements added to existing articles may be deleted if unreferenced or referenced poorly. See

II. Use proper spelling and grammar. This is a very important aspect of an article. "We want to learn editors to write proper" There are helpful guidelines in regards to styles. See

III. Use footnotes. Take advantage of the footnote ability Wikipedia has, instead of including html links inside the context include them as footnotes. See

IV. Write a good lead. Be sure to write a
Wikipedia:Lead section
for more information.
V. Stay on topic. Many articles are criticized for length; sticking to the subject matter helps eliminate this. See Wikipedia:The perfect article for more information.
VI. Keep it simple. Remember that the average reader should be able to comprehend the erudition. Although you should use a broad vocabulary of regular, non-technical terms, do not provide such a quantity of locutions as to impel those who aspire to derive serviceable information from the article to consult a dictionary.
VII. Use images if possible. Images enhance articles greatly, but only use them when they are necessary, and ensure that their copyright status has been specified and we are allowed to use it on Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Images
