The Election of New Sports for the 2020 Olympic Games

Several International Sports Federations campaigned to the Tokyo Organizing Committee to be included in the 2020 program, eventually the Tokyo OCOG made the decision to propose the inclusion of baseball/softball(as one sport, two disciplines), karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. The 2020 organizing committee presented the five sport package to the full International Olympic Committee at the IOC session in Rio on August 3, 2016.
