Note that today's use of cemeteries surrounding Church of Sweden buildings are independent of religious beliefs. Although cemeteries are non-denominational today, they were sectarian by the time they were founded, and listing them under their original denominational affiliation would be helpful for genealogists, as the burial records were usually kept by the individual parish.

The canons of the Church of Sweden on burial grounds states that: "§ 4 A new burial place for those who belong to the Church of Sweden must be consecrated. (The same applies when a burial site has been expanded) The inauguration ceremony must be led by the local dean or a priest appointed by the local dean."
