Chardon High School (commonly Chardon, Chardon High, or CHS), is a

grades 8-12. The school is part of the Chardon Local School District, with admission based primarily on the location of students' homes.[2] As of the 2021-22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,159 students and 54.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 21.46.[2]

Academics

In US News & World Report's 2022 ranking of best high schools, Chardon ranked 97th among Ohio high schools.[6] As of 2021, the school had a graduation rate of 97.8% with about 230 students graduating.[7]

All grades are un-weighted and students are ranked on a four-point scale. A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0. Advanced placement classes are offered in Physics, English, Statistics, AB Calculus, BC Calculus, Chemistry, American History, American Government, European History, Computer Science, French, and Spanish.[8]

Academic Decathlon

For over 11 years the high school ACADEC ( Academic Decathlon) team has been to the state tournament led by advisor Allen Herner. During the 2023 State Tournament at John Carroll University, the team received an impressive 28 State medals.[9]

Envirothon

The Chardon High School Envirothon team has competed for many years. At the 2017 Ohio Envirothon Competition earning 1st place in the state[10] and in 2022 placed 2nd overall and 1st in forestry.

Science Olympiad

The school has a successful Science Olympiad team fed by an outstanding middle school team. The high school team has been to states 24 times and continuously competes against national champions like Solon High School.[11]

2012 Shooting

On February 27, 2012, six students were shot at the school by 17-year-old T.J. Lane.[12] According to local news reports, the six victims were chosen at random, countering early reports that a group of students were targeted. Three of the victims died. All Chardon local schools were immediately closed following the shooting, while the high school was put under a lock-down procedure. The entire school district was closed on Tuesday, February 28. The district board also canceled classes in all schools until Friday, with numerous counseling services available until then. On March 19, 2013, Lane was given three life sentences, one for each of the victims killed in the shooting.

Media

The Hilltopper Echo is the official school newspaper for Chardon High School.[13]

The Principal Podcast is a weekly podcast starring students and staff of Chardon High School.[14]

The Week in Reflection is a summary of important events and information put together weekly by the principal for students, staff, and parents to keep up to date on happenings in the school.[15]

The school has many musical groups including a marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz orchestra, chorale, treble, and SA/TB ensembles.
