Honda Kobo・本多工房 (known formally as Artist Studio Honda Kobo) is a shared community space focused on nurturing Shiogama’s developing art and cultural scene. The space operates inside a former Japanese kimono shop building and is based in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.

Overview

Formally launched in January 2023, the space is a collaboration between Takada Aya’s Birdo Flugas and the creative and local communities of Shiogama and surrounding areas in Miyagi’s urban Matsushima coast. Reconstruction and renovation guidance was provided by students of the Tohoku Institute of Technology under the guidance of professor N. Arai.

The project began in Summer 2022 by completely renovating and retrofitting a nearly abandoned Japanese kimono shop building damaged by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The space is located in Shiogama’s Kitahama neighborhood and is a 5 minute walk from JR East Hon-Shiogama Station on the Senseki Line.

The building primarily runs several art studios and shared office spaces by various creative professionals, as well as a guest room for artists visiting Shiogama. In addition, it also hosts a variety of art workshops, art exhibits, as well as and lifelong learning and cultural gatherings by local community members. The space also has a rooftop lounge open only for special art and cultural events.

In addition, it occasionally runs an Open House for art curators and the general public to learn more about the space.
