Flaccia - Vlachia, Wallachia.

Secondary noncontemporary sources such as the Russian Chronograph 1914 and Georg von Reicherstorffer's "Chorographia Transylvaniae, Que Dacia Olim Appellata" give the account that this form is derived from Lucius Pomponius Flaccus who was sent on the Danube sometime around the year 16 AD when he was governor of Moesia; in which we are informed that "they drove out the Getae and Dacians and themselves remained there, and from Flaccus, they were named Vlachs”^[1] and that "the province they inhabit was settled by a certain Roman citizen named Flaccus, who established a colony there to defend the passes against the Dacians (whom the Romans never found trustworthy). However, over the course of time, which corrupts everything, Flaccia came to be called Wallachia and its people Wallachians in place of Flaccus".^[2]

These sources give the combined account that the status of these Flaccian colonists was that of 'Quirites' which is the name of Roman citizens in their peacetime functions, that their number were 30,000 and that they were "black men", possibly from the North African provinces of the empire; and it details some of their works and deeds such as preparing provisions for the Roman legionaries stationed on the Danube and diverting a river among other things.
