The Hornbuckle Law Firm
The Hornbuckle Law Firm is a law firm headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. The firm specializes in civil cases such as wrongful death and nursing home abuse. It's current practicing attorneys include Stephen Hornbuckle and Jacey Liu.
Founding
The firm was founded by Thomas Hornbuckle in 1980 in Texas. Initially, the firm had a focus on nursing home abuse, but this focus was broadened when Stephen Hornbuckle joined the firm in 1995.
Alternate Locations
The firm, originally founded in Texas, is now Washington-based. It moved from Texas to Seattle and it's offices are now settled in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue.
Notable Victories
The Hornbuckle Law Firm is most notable for pioneering nursing home litigation. In the 1980s, the growth of the nursing home industry began to slow. Nursing home litigation began as costs were cut and residents were wronged. However, the first major deterrent to nursing home abuse and neglect came in later in 1990 with Thomas Hornbuckle's landmark victory against the nursing home industry.
An elderly resident was restrained improperly with a vest, leading to their death in one particular nursing home. Hornbuckle sued the nursing home on behalf of the deceased's family and won over $39 million. This was the first major deterrent to nursing home abuse and neglect and helped to spark the contemporary practice area of nursing home abuse litigation. This verdict helped to ensure that nursing home care in the united states was held to a higher standard of care.
