James Masih aka Ustad Jimmy Khan (1958-Present) is a Tabla artist known for his Dhir Dhir (Tabla Bol) with absolute precision ..[1] He belongs to the Punjab Gharana[2] of Tabla as a disciple of late Ustad Mian Shaukat Hussain[3].

His feat is a manifestation of a beautiful union of technique and aesthetics. Ustad Jimmy Khan is a Great Solo Player as well as a Master Accompanist. He has introduced a lot of innovation and invented a Tabla taal or tala[4] called "Mian Shaukat Taal" which he named after his Ustad or Teacher: Mian Shaukat Hussain[5]. Today, Jimmy Khan is acknowledged as one of the foremost Tabla players of all time by musicians all over the world.

[Ustad Jimmy Khan] was born on 2nd December 1958 in Muzaffarpur, Sialkot[6]. Jimmy khan is a Pakistan Tabla player and composer. Jimmy Khan hails from the Punjab Gharana and is the student of Ustad Miyan Shaukat Hussain. Jimmy Khan developed a deep passion for tabla from an early age.

Career

Ustad Jimmy Khan has had a multifaceted career in music that spans several decades. He began his journey playing tabla in a church in 1975 and later became a pupil of a renowned tabla master Barkat Masih aka Mango Khan from Sialkot in 1979. In recognition of his talent, Ustad Jimmy Khan received a gold medal in a tabla competition held by the Punjab Arts Council, which led him to become the disciple of Ustad Mian Shaukat Hussain[8]

Throughout his career, Ustad Jimmy Khan has performed in various prestigious venues, including Alhamra Arts Council for Radio Pakistan in 1990 and, in 1998, in Bangladesh with Parvez Mehdi[9], upon the invitation of then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif[10]. Former President of Pakistan, General Perviaz Musharraf[11], invited him to perform on three separate occasions. Ustad Jimmy Khan has also performed with Rustam Fateh Ali Khan in Dubai on the Golden Jubilee of Pakistan, and in 2013, He showcased his solo tabla performance in Norway and Thailand. In 2014, He performed with Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, and throughout his career, He has accompanied all the musical maestros of Pakistan

Traditional Arts Festival was held in Cairo from 19-25 April 2013. 25 countries participated in the event. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Incharge of Musicology Department, National College of Arts and James Masih, alias Ustaad Jimmy Khan, represented Pakistan in the festival. They performed in the musical events arranged by the Egyptian government at various places. A special musical performance was arranged by Pakistan Embassy at the historical Arab Music Institute on 26th April 2013. The audience included Pakistanis, members of diplomatic community and Egyptians. Famous writer and poet Farouk Shosha was the guest of honour on the occasion. Jimmy Khan mastered the tabla and invented a taal "Mian Shaukat" Taal. He dedicated his effort to his teacher Ustad Mian Shaukat Hussain and named this taal after his teacher.

It is a 11 14 beat cycle or Sawa 11 Matre cycle in Urdu.
