Elizabeth G. Ferris

Elizabeth G. Ferris (born c. 1950) is a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program

School of Foreign Service. She is also commissioner of the Women's Refugee Commission
, a distinguished author and a lifelong humanitarian.

Education

She received her B.A. in History from

magna cum laude. In 1972, she received her M.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida. In 1976, Ferris received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Florida
, specializing in International Relations and Latin American Studies.

Career

Ferris’ work encompasses a wide range of issues related to

Ferris has written many articles on humanitarian and human rights issues that have been published in both academic and policy journals. Notable publications for which she has written include Refugee Survey Quarterly,

Brookings-LSE Project on Internal Displacement

The Brookings-LSE Project on Internal Displacement, established in 1994, is co-directed by Ferris and Chaloka Beyani, the current UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons. The goal of the project is to develop global and regional normative standards on internal displacement, to support governments, civil society and international actors in their work with internally displaced persons, and to carry out independent research on situations of internal displacement.

She is married to Barry Childers, clinical psychologist, and they have two children: Jon Ferris and Sara Ferris-Childers.
