La tradition rapporte que de nouvelles armes furent concédées par Saint-Louis à Geoffroy IV et aux barons de Châteaubriant, en récompense de sa valeur et de sa fidélité. Les barons de Châteaubriant adoptèrent alors cette magnifique devise : "notre sang teint les bannières de France". En réalité, cette tradition n'est absoluement pas fondée. Selon http://gm_serv.club.fr/kreabreizh/Dessins/page-Armorial-44.htm, après la bataille de Mansourah (1250), Chotard de Chateaubriant sauve Louis IX d’un dard et répand son sang sur les armes du monarque. Pour le remercier, le roi de France l'autorise à les transformer le papelonné en fleurs de lys (selon Joinville). C'est exactement la même tradition non fondée, d'autant plus que le baron de Châteaubriant, comme tout porteur d'armoiries, n'avait absolument pas besoin de l'autorisation du roi de France (qui n'était d'ailleur pas son suzerain) pour changer ses armes et y mettre des fleurs de lys.
